Syrus Qazi assumes charge as new Foreign Secretary

ISLAMABAD, Aug 17 (APP): Ambassador Muhammad Syrus Sajjad Qazi on Thursday assumed the responsibilities as the 32nd Foreign Secretary of Pakistan.

He has replaced Ambassador Asad Majeed Khan who retired from the government service upon attaining superannuation.

Ambassador Qazi brings with him an extensive experience in bilateral and multilateral diplomacy with postings in India, the United States, and the United Nations in Geneva.

He served as Ambassador of Pakistan to Hungary from 2015 to 2017 and to Türkiye from 2017 to 2022.

PHA initiates floral work on green belts

LAHORE, Aug 17 (APP):Parks & Horticulture Authority on Thursday initiated horticultural work on various roads of the city on directions of Director General PHA Muhammad Tahir Wattoo.

In first phase, seedlings of beautiful flowers were being planted on green belts of Green Town, Zahoor Elahi Road, New Campus, Ferozepur Road, and Main Boulevard Faisal Town while grass trimming process has been started.
In a statement, DG PHA Tahir Wattoo said that the aim of the work was to beautify the city and it would be completed soon.
He said that steps were being taken to improve the drainage system for rainwater and cleaning the belts, security, and horticultural maintenance of parks was our top priority. DG also announced the continuation of these supportive measures.

Urgency of adopting collaborative approach crucial to yield sustainable DRR: Cheema

ISLAMABAD, Aug 17 (APP):Country Representative, International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN-Pakistan), Mahmood Akhtar Cheema has emphasized the urgency of adopting a collaborative approach, which was crucial amid for spiking up environmental degradation as development partners were currently working individually while combining their resources could yield sustainable Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR).

He was addressing in insightful group discussion on ‘Climate Change and its Impacts on DRR’ held at the Pakistan Expo on Disaster Risk Reduction 2023 (PEDRR-23) titled “Navigating Towards Resilience: Group Discussion on Climate Change and its Impacts on DRR” organised by IUCN.

The experts and enthusiasts came together to delve into the critical intersection of climate change and disaster risk reduction. They agreed to collaborate and drive meaningful action to build a resilient future for Pakistan.

In his opening remarks, the IUCN-Pakistan, Country Representative provided an overview of Pakistan’s climate situation and the significant disasters experienced, particularly in the past year. The devastating floods caused massive destruction in two major provinces: Sindh and Baluchistan.

Cheema underlined that Pakistan’s climate change gender action plan includes a dedicated section on Disaster Risk Reduction, and now was the opportune moment to unite efforts for its practical implementation. He also emphasized the introduction of biodiversity credits in Pakistan.

Dr. Ghulam Rasool, senior expert on Climate Change, delivered an extensive presentation that paved the way for an engaging group discussion. The presentation was rich in detail and comprehensive in scope enabled the participants to collectively analyse and address the challenges and opportunities associated with climate change and disaster risk reduction in Pakistan.

As the discussion commenced, it became evident that Pakistan’s geographical and climatic diversity presented a complex array of disaster risks, including floods, earthquakes, droughts, and landslides. Participants emphasized that a proactive approach was imperative, one that focused on pre-emptive measures, early warning systems, and community engagement. It was underscored that any sustainable risk reduction strategy must stem from the grassroots level.

Ali Tauqeer Sheikh, senior expert on climate change informed the participants about flood-hit districts of Balochistan which are still lacking support from the provincial disaster management authority because of lack of funding.

Representing National Disaster Risk Management Fund (NDRMF), Muhammad Fawad Hayat, Head Climate Change highlighted the fact that, “Policy and frameworks needs to be implemented to build resilience. There is an increase in number of disasters and hazards due to climate change impacts, which is affecting financial and fiscal space of countries across the globe. Strategic interventions play an important role, timely implementation of these interventions is the key, to reduce the gap of cost being incurred due to hazard and vulnerability.”

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Dr. M. Iqbal Choudhary, Coordinator General COMSTECH shed light on the way ahead, emphasizing collaboration, community engagement, technology incorporation, and policy adjustments. He underscored that disaster risk reduction transcends the obligations of governments and institutions; it’s a shared responsibility encompassing all societal sectors.

ICP on-campus precious trees on sale to meet expenses

PESHAWAR, Aug 17 (APP):The Islamia College Peshawar (ICP) in a bid to meet the university expenses has put the on-campus precious trees and wood on sale.

According to an official document, “The office of the convener center purchase committee has floated an advertisement in the newspapers inviting the bid for the sale of 53 dry trees of Sheesham (Dalbergia Sissoo), 23 trees of mulberries, one each Chinar (Plantanus Orientalis), Bakayan (Melia Azedarach) and Shanae.”

The successful bidder would be responsible to axe and removing the trees within seven days of the bid.

It is to mention here that the Islamic College University, one of the prestigious institutes of higher education in the country, was currently facing a severe financial crisis– several pensioners were denied payment of pensions due to the reason.

“The provincial government, as well as the higher education department, have time and again asked the university administration to generate resources from their own to overcome the financial burden, it added.

ISLAMABAD, Aug 17 (APP):Small Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) is going to organize a webinar on “Amazon Private Label for SMES” for profitable business growth on August 19 (Saturday).

SMEDA under National Business Development Programme (NBDP) for SMEs, is offering free online awareness sessions on various e-commerce verticals through pre-qualified services provider M/S Extreme Commerce across Pakistan, according to a source in the authority.

The e-commerce awareness and training initiatives will provide opportunities to the SMEs on high trending and most demanding e-commerce tools, and platforms.

Indonesian Ambassador, EO explore avenues for collaboration between young entrepreneurs

ISLAMABAD, Aug 17 (APP):Indonesian Ambassador to Pakistan Adam M. Tugio and a delegation from the Islamabad chapter of the Entrepreneurs’ Organization (EO) have explored avenues for collaboration between the young entrepreneurs and business communities of Indonesia and Pakistan.

During a meeting, the ambassador hailed the EO Islamabad chapter’s proactive approach to strengthening bilateral trade relations said a news release issued here on Thursday.

The discussions encompassed diverse topics including trade and investment, entrepreneurship, economic empowerment of women, and innovation.

The envoy extended an invitation to executive members of EO to participate in the upcoming Trade Expo Indonesia (TEI) 2023 and Halal Expo in October.

“TEI will be showcasing Indonesia’s vibrant and diverse manufacture products attractive to the Pakistani business community,” added Tugio.

He also underscored the importance of fostering partnerships at the entrepreneurial level as it could pave the way for a more comprehensive cooperation between Indonesia and Pakistan.

In light of this, the Embassy offered to facilitate B2B meetings of EO with the young entrepreneurs’ Association of Indonesia (HIPMI) and Indonesian Chamber of Commerce on the margin of the EO visit to participate in TEI.

President of EO Islamabad Chapter Taimur Adil thanked the Indonesian Ambassador for the meeting and expressed enthusiasm for the collaborative endeavors.

“We are excited about the potential for cooperation with the Indonesian Embassy and EO Islamabad Chapter is committed to exploring opportunities that drive economic growth and cultural understanding,” said Taimur.

He further added, “EO is interested to visit and participate in Trade Expo Indonesia 2023.”

Around 2,627 valid OEPs registered with BEOE; official

ISLAMABAD, Aug 17 (APP): The Bureau of Emigration and Overseas Employment (BEOE) has registered some 2,627 valid Overseas Employment Promoter (OEPs) to ensure protection of off shore employment seekers from scam and fake organisations minting money from innocent masses through hoax job opportunities.

The Bureau has provided employment to over a million emigrants since its inception in 1971 through duly registered OEPs whereas during the year 2015 highest number of Pakistanis 946,571 proceeded abroad for the purpose of job and during the year 2023 (till July), 450,110 Pakistanis proceeded abroad for the purpose of employment, an official of BEOE told APP here on Thursday.

The official said that the Bureau was playing a vital role in reducing the pressure of joblessness at home, besides being a major means of earning foreign exchange in the shape of overseas workers’ remittances.

The overseas job opportunities are thus, serving as the mainstay for the national economy, by providing much needed financial outlay for debt servicing, imports bill, alleviation of poverty, development projects and economic activities.

The Bureau, being a regulatory body, controls, regulates, facilitates and monitors the emigration process followed by the OEPs, in the private sector, besides direct employment, the mode adopted by the individuals, to seek foreign employment either through their own efforts or relatives and friends living abroad, he added.

He said the foremost task of BEOE encompasses collection, compilation and tabulation of emigration data of all those Pakistanis who proceed abroad for employment purpose. In fact, the Bureau has been engaged in maintaining a comprehensive statistical record of all the migrant workers since 1971, which provides basis for planning and policy formulation by the Economic Division and other interested government departments.

Sargodha University issues notification of 27 teachers’ promotion in grade 21

Couple killed as car plunges into canal

SARGODHA, Aug 17 (APP):A couple was killed when a car plunged into a canal in the precincts of Piplan police station.
Police said on Thursday that Muhammad Ilyas(34) r/o piplan city along with his wife Mahpara (29) was traveling in a car on Sargodha, Mianwali road when it plunged into a canal after its tyre burst near Chak 291ML.
Both died on the spot.
Rescue-1122 retrieved the bodies and shifted to the hospital.
Police were investigating.
