Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Ali earn spots for England Tests

0

LAHORE, Nov 21 (APP):Mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed and fast bowler Mohammad Ali have been rewarded for their strong first-class performances with maiden Test call-ups as Pakistan announced an 18-player squad for December’s three ICC World Test Championship matches against England.

Twenty-four-year-old Abrar is in red-hot form in the ongoing Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Before the start of the last round on Sunday (20 November), Abrar had claimed 43 wickets at an average of 21.95. He has recorded five five-wicket hauls in six matches and has played an integral role in turning his side into serious contenders to secure a berth in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy final.

Central Punjab’s Mohammad Ali has been the best fast bowler in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in the last two editions, taking 56 wickets. His 24 wickets, including two five wicket hauls, at 25.54 in six matches are the most for any fast bowler this first-class season. His 32 wickets at 22.78 in eight matches in 2021-22 were also the most for a fast bowler.

Uncapped Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Zahid Mehmood, who were part of the Test side for the three Tests against Australia earlier in the year, are the other two players to return to the side.

Pakistan squad for England Tests: Babar Azam (c) (Central Punjab), Mohammad Rizwan (vc & wk) (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Abdullah Shafique (Central Punjab), Abrar Ahmed (Sindh), Azhar Ali (Central Punjab), Faheem Ashraf (Central Punjab), Haris Rauf (Northern), Imam-ul-Haq (Balochistan), Mohammad Ali (Central Punjab), Mohammad Nawaz (Northern), Mohammad Wasim Jnr (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa), Naseem Shah (Southern Punjab), Nauman Ali (Northern), Salman Ali Agha (Southern Punjab), Sarfaraz Ahmed (Sindh), Saud Shakeel (Sindh), Shan Masood (Balochistan) and Zahid Mehmood (Sindh)

There are four changes in the squad from Pakistan’s last Test assignment, which was in Sri Lanka that resulted in the two-Test series ending 1-1. The four players who are not part of the side are Shaheen Shah Afridi, Hasan Ali, Fawad Alam and Yasir Shah.

Shaheen was unavailable for selection after he underwent appendicitis surgery on Sunday, which will require three-four weeks’ rest following which he will resume his two-week rehabilitation on his right knee.

Fawad managed 33 runs in four innings of three Tests against Australia earlier this year, while he scored 25 runs in his only Test in Sri Lanka. Hasan Ali took five wickets in his last four Tests against Australia and Sri Lanka, while Yasir Shah bagged nine wickets in Sri Lanka but has managed only 14 wickets in seven Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches to date.

Chief selector Muhammad Wasim addressing a news conference here on Monday at Gadaffi stadium said : “I want to congratulate all the players who have been selected for the historic Test series against England. We have selected this 18-man squad keeping in mind the form of the players, the conditions and the opposition.

“This series has provided opportunities to Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Wasim Jnr and Zahid Mehmood. Abrar has been on the radar since his debut first-class season in 2020-21. He is in outstanding form this season, so it makes sense to make him available to Babar Azam so he can use the confidence and talent of this youngster in the upcoming series.

“Zahid is another bowler who has been in the plans. He has shown improvement over the years and has been part of the successive squads.

“We have boosted our fast bowling stocks with the best available talent. There is no doubt about the skills of Mohammad Wasim Jnr. He moves the new and old ball laterally at high pace, which is a huge plus for any side.

“Mohammad Ali has shown great patience and control, and his numbers speak for his consistency. He has been our best fast bowler in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 56 wickets at an average of 24 over the last two seasons.

“I am confident that this team will ensure that the upcoming Test series against England will end in the same manner as it did when they last toured Pakistan in 2005.”

The three Tests are part of the ICC World Test Championship and are scheduled to be played in Rawalpindi (1-5 December), Multan (9-13 December) and Karachi (17-21 December).

Each of the nine teams play six series – three at home and three away – in 2021-23 cycle. The upcoming series is Pakistan’s fifth – their last series will be the two Tests against New Zealand in December 2022 and January 2023. These three Tests will be England’s final appearance in the second edition of the World Test Championship.

‘A step towards justice’, says UN chief as COP27 closes with deal on loss and damage

0

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 20 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres termed as a “step towards Justice” the agreement at the COP27 climate summit to establish a funding mechanism to compensate vulnerable nations for ‘loss and damage’ from climate-induced disasters, after days of intense negotiations that stretched into early Sunday morning in Sharm el-Sheikh.

“This COP has taken an important step towards justice. I welcome the decision to establish a loss and damage fund and to operationalize it in the coming period,” the UN chief said in a video message issued from the conference venue in Egypt, underscoring that the voices of those on the frontlines of the climate crisis must be heard.

He was referring to what ended up becoming the thorniest issue at this COP, shorthand for the annual Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

Developing countries made strong and repeated appeals for the establishment of a loss and damage fund, to compensate the countries that are the most vulnerable to climate disasters, yet who have contributed little to the climate crisis.

“Clearly this will not be enough, but it is a much-needed political signal to rebuild broken trust,” he underscored, stressing that the UN system will support the effort every step of the way.

Ahead of action on the texts, COP27 President Sameh Shoukry, who is also the Foreign Minister of Egypt, told delegations that the draft decisions were “a gateway that will scale up implementation and will enable us to transform to future of climate future neutrality and climate resilient development.”

“I call upon all of you to view these draft decisions not merely as words on paper but as a collective message to the world that we have heeded the call of our leaders and of current and future generations to set the right pace and direction for the implementation of the Paris agreement and the achievement of its goals.”

Shoukry added: “The world is watching, I call on us all to rise to the expectations entrusted to us by the global community, and especially by those who are most vulnerable and yet have contributed the least to climate change.”

‘Momentous win’ for Pakistan COP27’s accord on Loss and Damage fund: Munir Akram

0

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 20 (APP): Pakistan’s UN Ambassador, Munir Akram, described as “momentous win” for Pakistan and the developing countries
Sunday’s agreement at COP27 Climate Summit in Egypt to establish Loss and Damage fund to help poor nations being battered by climate disasters.

“A momentous win for Pakistan and the developing countries,” Ambassador Akram said, when asked for comments by APP correspondent.

He called the agreement the “fruits of political clarity, unity, and perseverance.”

In his remarks at COP27’s opening session in Sharm El-Sheikh, Ambassador Munir Akram, as Chairman of G77 and China, highlighted that the group was united in its demand for the establishment of a dedicated finance facility to provide new and additional financial support to developing countries for addressing ‘loss and damage’ associated with the adverse impacts of climate change.

People to hold accountable those trying to impede LG polls in AJK: Tanveer

0

MIRPUR ( AJK )Nov 20 (APP):: Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan has said that no one can impede the local government elections scheduled to be held in AJK on November 27 after a long pause of over 31 years.

Talking to public delegations and media representatives in Bagh, he said the masses would hold such elements accountable that had been trying to jeopardize LG elections, said a release received here on Sunday.

“Power is going to be transferred to the people at the grassroots level through the scheduled civic election”, the AJK PM said, adding that whomsoever opposed the LG elections would be considered enemies of the people.

The AJK PM said his government would fulfill the pre-election commitments it had made with the people.

He urged the party workers not to pay heed to rumors and fake news being spread and circulated through social media.

“Political workers, regardless of their political affiliation, have the right to contest elections and play their role in nation building”, he said, it was quite heartening to see that the municipal polls were being held and the devolution of power was going to take place in the state after 31 years.

Tanveer further said that there was no security issue in AJK during the scheduled LG elections.

“The people of AJK will not allow anyone to disturb the law and order situation during the polls”, he said, adding that the entire nation should support the government in holding the elections to foil the designs of those people who were against the transfer of power to the lower level.
