PVC market growing with wide array of downstream applications

KARACHI, Dec 08 (APP): With growing consumer awareness about new construction materials and sustainability, the PVC downstream market in Pakistan is expected to witness an upward trend in the coming years.

A recent report by PACRA expects the local construction industry to record growth of 6 percent this year. Over the next seven years, the sector is expected to grow by a whopping 92 percent as Pakistan enters the rehabilitation phase in the aftermath of catastrophic floods and China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC)-related activities revive as well. As a result, the demand for PVC applications and other construction materials is also likely to gain traction.

According to Muhammad Idrees, Chief Commercial Officer of Engro Polymer & Chemicals Limited (EPCL), “The PVC market in Pakistan has undergone a phase of growth and diversification in the last few years. To meet the market requirements, we have continued to scale our operations and completed Plant expansion to 295,000 tons annually. Last year, we contributed USD 165 million in import substitution through local PVC & VCM production and generated USD 28 million in foreign exchange through exports.” He further mentioned that due to Pakistan’s inherit advantages and claose proximity to growing regional markets, there is huge export potential for PVC downstream products, which should be capitalized by local manufacturers.

He added that, “To promote the use of high-quality PVC downstream products, especially in the construction sector of Pakistan, EPCL is undertaking various market development initiatives and has made significant investment with its partners to launch a branded outlet called thinkPVC.”

Elaborating on the concept of thinkPVC outlet, he said that EPCL wants to engage the construction industry and other associated stakeholders to highlight innovative construction materials, with a focus on sustainable materials such as PVC. Currently, around 55 percent market share of PVC application in Pakistan is held by pipes and fittings. The goal is to create wider awareness that PVC resin applications include the manufacturing of doors, windows, flooring, roofing, outdoor furniture, vanities, and other products.”

Idrees shared that with increasing population, there is a dire need to adopt modern and innovative construction materials for sustainable living. Compared to other materials, PVC is waterproof, termite and damage resistant, fire retardant, and a light-weight material, which offers high durability and requires minimal maintenance. PVC is more sustainable as it has 50 percent lower carbon footprint as compared to aluminum, a competing product. It also has a much longer life span and is recyclable. Consumers can save up to 28 percent in heating and cooling costs when using a double-glazed PVC window.

He believes that the future of PVC downstream market in Pakistan remains promising as climate change tops the government agenda and more sustainable practices will be adopted by the construction industry. “All sectors in Pakistan are expected to adopt greener solutions in line with the government policy of preserving natural resources and forests. PVC is a viable alternative to wood products, and we expect to see greater market penetration of PVC downstream products as the construction sector embraces a Go Green approach”, Idrees stated.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8 (APP): Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Interfaith Harmony and Middle East Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi on Thursday said there should be no politicking on the assassination of senior journalist Arshad Sharif.

The entire nation was saddened by the brutal murder of the senior journalist, but certain elements were out to the incident controversial for political point-scoring, he said while talking to APP.

Ashrafi, who is also Pakistan Ulema Council chairman, said the application of Arshad Sharif’s mother apparently did not address the core issue – justice for the slain journalist.

He hailed the Supreme Court’s direction to form a Joint Investigation Team to thoroughly probe the whole incident. There should be fair investigations so that his mother and other family members get justice, he added.

From day one, he said, some elements were bent upon politicizing the issue and maligning the institutions
for their ulterior motives. The whole nation was unanimous that the culprits must be brought to justice, Ashrafi added.

Pakistan committed to eliminate corruption; promote transparency, accountability: President

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8 (APP):As the world is set to observe International Anti-Corruption Day on Friday, President Dr Arif Alvi has said that Pakistan is committed to eliminating corruption in its all forms and manifestations, and promoting transparency and accountability in its governance system.

The president, in his message on the Day, said corruption was a serious challenge faced by both developing and developed countries and required consistent efforts, effective monitoring and controls, committed leadership, and an active civil society to curb the menace.

“The scourge of corruption and its various manifestations, moral or financial, are responsible for some of the gravest threats facing our nation. Corruption contributes to instability and poverty, and is a dominant factor driving fragile countries towards state failure,” he remarked.

He said fighting corruption was a serious concern for developing countries, especially Pakistan, as “it weakens security, hinders economic growth, deprives the nation of precious and scarce public and private resources. It also creates social and economic disparities, erodes the economic edifice of society, and weakens state institutions.”

President Alvi said the International Anti-Corruption Day provided an opportunity to reflect on the progress made over the past years in the fight against corruption, but also to think about the work that remained to be done in the years ahead.

“Elimination of corruption is a mission but we will not succeed in this fight unless we are fully committed to its elimination, and are guided by the ingenuity, expertise, and energy of those who are on the frontlines of this fight,” he commented.

He said though Pakistan had taken a number of actions to eliminate corruption and ensure accountability, however, much needed to be done in that regard.

He said the fight against corruption could not be won unless all segments of society joined their hands in the efforts to uproot corruption.

He said the role of civil society was also very critical in detecting the root causes of corruption, exposing corrupt acts, shifting social norms, and mobilizing support for ambitious reforms based on moral values, justice, fairness, and equal opportunity for all.

President Alvi said when anti-corruption efforts were well-rooted, they were more likely to be effective and sustained. It was, therefore, vital that “we come together with a collective response to eradicate corruption.”

He said enhancing parliamentary oversight and constructing a legislative framework that deterred corrupt practices and promoted transparency was essential in addressing corruption.

Similarly, enhancing the capabilities of criminal justice institutions to investigate and prosecute corruption was also crucial to exposing malign influence, he added.

Moreover, he said, the procurement processes that complied with international anti-corruption standards would ensure a level playing field for investors. Most importantly, a robust civil society and free press were critical to hold public officeholders responsible for their actions.

“It is high time to unite the role of key stakeholders and individuals in the elimination of corruption by sharing the best practices and examples of preventing and countering corruption worldwide. This could be achieved by strengthening international cooperation against corruption, tackling linkages with other forms of crime, enabling the recovery and return of stolen assets, developing innovative solutions, advancing prevention through education, leveraging youth engagement, and mobilizing allies in civil society, academia and the private sector in line with the dictates of United Nations Convention Against Corruption,” the president said.

He called for reaffirming the commitment to eliminate corruption, promote transparency and accountability, and purge the evil from society.

“I am hopeful that Pakistan can emerge as a strong and prosperous nation if we make committed, concerted, and sincere efforts to root out this menace from our society,” he remarked.

KP farmers to get training under $1 mln US assistance project

ISLAMABAD, Dec 8 (APP): The US Embassy and the Government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Planning and Development Department have jointly launched a new development project worth $1 million to provide training to farmers, improve irrigation systems, and increase household income in the province.

“This US assistance will fund 200 training courses targeting approximately 4,000 farmers, with a special focus on women farmers,” a US Embassy news release said on Thursday.

It would also fund the construction of irrigation systems to reduce flood risk and improve water resource use, helping increase crop yields and improve economic livelihoods, the embassy added.

This new assistance follows the successful completion of development projects worth over $6 million, which have benefited over 44,000 families from the Bajaur, Khyber, Mohmand, and Torghar districts since 2019.

US Embassy Deputy Chief of Mission Andrew Schofer, Director of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) Lori Antolinez, Additional Chief Secretary Shahab Ali Shah, Director General of Planning & Development Department KP, and Joint Secretary Economic Affairs Division Islam Zaib attended the project signing ceremony in Islamabad.

Andrew Schofer lauded the longstanding partnership between the US and the KP governments for curbing illegal crop production in the province.

“This investment will provide important skills training to women farmers in the newly merged districts, helping to increase crop yields and promoting economic opportunity in Mohmand, Bajaur, Khyber, and Torghar districts,” he noted.

Since 1988, Andrew Schofer said, the US government’s crop control programme had invested more than $80 million in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “This assistance includes construction of over 1200-kilometer roads, 1300 water supply and irrigation projects, and over 75,500 acres of demonstration plots for high-yield substitute crops, benefitting over 360,000 families.”

“Poppy cultivation in Pakistan has been reduced by 87% during this period, a powerful indicator of the success of our longstanding partnership,” he added.

Referring to 75 years of bilateral relations between Pakistan and the United States, the embassy said the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs was also marking the 40-year anniversary of partnership in Pakistan to advance justice, security, and prosperity.

“Over the past four decades, the US government has invested more than $1 billion dollars to improve citizen security and enhance law enforcement capacity across Pakistan,” it added.

“The United States works in more than 90 countries to help combat crime and corruption, counter the narcotics trade, improve police institutions, and promote court systems that are fair and accountable.”
