Around two dozen MoUs expected in a few days as SIFC gets popular: Jilani
ISLAMABAD, Sep 28 (APP): Minister for Foreign Affairs Jalil Abbas Jilani on Thursday said that around one-and-half to two dozen MoUs with different countries were expected to be signed within the next few days as the forum of Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) had become popular.
The foreign minister, in a news conference on his return from the US visit, told the media that during the interactions with the foreign delegates including the business community on the sidelines of the UNGA session in New York, the response about the SIFC was very positive.
He said a delegation of the Pak-US businessmen was expected next month which was also the outcome of the SIFC’s establishment as well as the positive indicators of Pakistan’s economy.
He said as SIFC was focused on the promotion of agriculture, IT and mining, the country was striving to enhance its IT exports to $10 billion.
The foreign minister, who apprised the media about his as well as Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar’s engagements in New York rubbished the notions of rolling back the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
“The CPEC is a very transformative project. There is absolutely no question of rolling it back… I can say with 100 percent surety that you will just see progress in CPEC in the coming years. There should be no doubt about it,” he remarked.
He told the newsmen that apart from his address at the UNGA session, the prime minister addressed the meetings on Sustainable Development Goals, Global Development Initiative, climate change and pandemic besides holding bilateral meetings with world leaders.
Similarly, Foreign Minister Jilani said he also held around 20 bilateral meetings besides attending the OIC Contact Group’s meetings on Kashmir and Palestine, besides media interactions.
To a question, he reiterated that there had been no change in Pakistan’s foreign policy vis-a-vis Palestine and Israel as the country always advocated for the self-determination rights of the Palestinians.
Likening the issue of Kashmir with Palestine, the foreign minister said Pakistan’s position was based on the policy of protecting its own interests as both issues involved the denial of self-determination rights.
He called the participation in UNGA session the “most cost-effective” way to highlight Pakistan’s position before the world under one roof and said the delegation comprised the prime minister, foreign minister, and foreign secretary.
He said many countries expressed their condemnations of the Islamophobic incidents which also persuaded Denmark to initiate legislation to criminalize the desecration of holy books with many other countries also mulling over a similar approach.
The foreign minister opposed the notion of Pakistan facing any isolation rather said that except a few, all of the foreign ministers he had met, expressed their desire to interact with Pakistan’s delegation considering the country an important player on multiple forums.
Responding to a query, he said not only Pakistan, but the world was concerned about the terror incidents originating from Afghanistan and that the Afghan side had also committed at the trilateral forum to not allow misuse of their soil against any other country.
Asked about the oil purchase from Russia, the foreign minister said by doing so Pakistan had not violated any sanction as many other countries were also in the trade relationship with the country.
About the policy of deporting the illegal nationals, he said it was not just about the Afghan nationals but all of those from any country. He said the policy was approved by the cabinet and would be enforced strictly.
The foreign minister said the killing of a Khalistan leader in Canada had unmasked India with some countries also calling for a UN-led probe into the incident. He said India had been carrying out such killings in all South Asian nations and viewed that the matter of Sikh leader’s murder would not settle so easily.
To a question, Jilani said Pakistan was in talks with Iran side to address the impediments in the execution of the Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline project.

Around 3 out of 10 deaths in Pakistan occur due to CVDs: Speakers
ISLAMABAD, Sep 28 (APP): The Speakers on the occasion of a symposium on World Heart Day Thursday underscored that around 3 out of 10 deaths in Pakistan were contributed by Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) that demanded the masses to take good care of their health and eating habits to avoid serious heart diseases.
World Heart Day is celebrated every year on 29th September and the global cardiovascular health community tries to raise awareness about heart disease and its preventive measures. Cardio-vascular diseases (CVDs) are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels and include coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, rheumatic heart disease, and other conditions, a news release said.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the most important behavioral risk factors of heart disease are unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, tobacco use, and harmful use of alcohol.
“Life is short, but our negligence can make it even shorter”, said Mukhtar Ahmad Ali whose organization Centre for Peace and Development Initiatives (CPDI) is working in Pakistan, in partnership with Global Health Advocacy incubator on eliminating trans fats from the food supply to prevent cardiovascular diseases.
“The heart is the vital organ of the human body, and if it is neglected our life and life is compromised and the World Heart Day is a wake-up call for us to take care of our heart before it is too late”, he said.
Citing statistics he said, “Globally, cardio-vascular ailments cause 17.9 million deaths every year. In Pakistan, according to the WHO (2016)1 estimates, around 29 percent of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) attributable deaths in Pakistan were due to heart-related disorders, and it is alarming.”, he added.
“Pakistan needs to seriously think about the idea of improving preventive cardiology to contain the fast spread of CVDs”, said Prof. Dr. Anjum Jalal an eminent cardiac surgeon who is currently working as Executive Director of Punjab Institute of Cardiology Lahore and is Dean of the Faculty of Cardiac Surgery at College of Physicians & Surgeons Pakistan. “There is a strong need to work on dietary risk factors such as limiting the presence of trans fatty acids in all food supplies in Pakistan”, he added.
“In Pakistan around 3/10 deaths are contributed by CVDs”, said Dr. Khawaja Masuood Ahmed, National Coordinator Nutrition and NFA at the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination. Talking about dietary risk factors of CVDs he said, “High consumption of trans fatty acids (TFAs), sugar (especially sugar-sweetened beverages), sodium (edible salt), and lack of physical activity along with low consumption of fruits and vegetables are leading factors of CVDs”.
While discussing how to control the presence of ITFAs (Industrially produced trans fatty acids) in foods, Dr. Mausood gave an example of international best policy practices and said that Pakistan must eliminate industrially produced TFA by setting the 2% limit of ITFA of total fats in all foods.
He updated that the Ministry of Health has already initiated the process. “With adequate regulations in place, we can limit the supply of unhealthy fats in the food system, and save our population from many CVDs” he concluded.
