Crackdown against pilferers; 314 MEPCO officers transferred

MULTAN, Sep 08 (APP):As many as 314 operational officers debuted on different posts of Multan Electric Power Company (MEPCO)  were transferred to make a crackdown drive against power pilferers successfully following Power Division orders.
Official sources said on Friday that those who have been transferred included nine Superintendent Engineers (SE)  of as many circles and 13 officers of grade-19 .
They informed that officers belonged to Multan,  Muzaffargarh, Khanewal, Vehari,  Bahawalnagar, Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur, DG Khan and Sahiwal Circles.
56 XENs,13 deputy Managers and 18 deputy commercial managers of grade-18, while 195 SDOs/Asst Managers and 21 Revenue officers of grade-17 have been transferred in this connection, they concluded.

Sindh Finance Minister for expediting reconstruction of flood affected houses

KARACHI, Sep 08 (APP):Sindh Caretaker Minister for Finance, Revenue and Planning and Development, Muhammad Younus Dagha, on Friday, stressing on expediting reconstruction of houses damaged in floods of 2022 directed to release Rs.20 billion every month in the regard.
The minister, while chairing a meeting in this regard, expressed dissatisfaction over the pace of work and said that it would take many years to complete the work at this pace, which would not only increase hardships of the affected people but reconstruction cost might also increase many fold, said a press release.
He directed the project director and the partner NGOs to ensure the opening of at least 100,000 bank accounts of flood victims every month while an amount of Rs.20 billion should be released monthly so that the speed of reconstruction work could be accelerated and the construction of houses be completed in the shortest possible time.
The caretaker minister instructed deputy commissioners concerned to complete the process of issuing ownership documents of the newly constructed houses to the residents at the earliest.
Younus Dagha observed that funds were available to ensure the reconstruction of 100,000 houses every month. However, to maintain this pace in the next year, negotiations should be held with the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and Islamic Development Bank so that the issue of lack of funds could be dealt with.
The provincial minister was told that about 2.1 million houses were destroyed in the 2022 floods in Sindh, of which construction work has been started on 130,000 houses while Rs.10.306 billion have been transferred to bank accounts of the flood victims but slow pace of opening bank accounts was the major obstacle in the reconstruction work.
On which the caretaker minister directed that heads of the relevant banks should be sensitized about the importance of the project and asked to encourage their branch officials to expeditethe  opening of the accounts. The meeting also decided to engage more banks in the process.
The meeting was briefed that during the flood of 2022, the damage to houses and infrastructure in Sindh was estimated at $ 5.5 billion while more than Rs.425.843 billion were required for reconstruction of the damaged houses.
The amount of funds that have been received so far for the reconstruction of house was Rs.190 billion among them the World Bank has pledged $ 500 million (around Rs.140 billion) and the Sindh government has pledged loans of Rs.50 billion while there was a funding gap of over Rs.244 billion, the meeting was told.
Currently, five NGOs- SRSO, SAFWCO, HANDS, TRDP and NRSP- were working in 20 flood-affected districts and they have assured full assistance for gearing up the reconstruction work, the meeting was informed.

Lawyer found shot dead in his residence

HYDERABAD, Sep 08 (APP):A lawyer was found dead with a gunshot to his head at his residence in Baldia Colony area here on Friday.
The police said the preliminary evidence showed that the advocate Irshad Jahejo apparently took his own life.
His body was shifted to Liaquat University Hospital where Jahejo, who has been survived by his wife with whom he had married around two years ago, was declared dead.
The police said the family took away Jahejo’s body without fulfilling the medico-legal formalities.
Jahejo’s father Juman Jahejo is Chairman of Union Council Odero Lal in Matiari district where the lawyer would be laid to rest.

Regional police traced 9,392 cases during seven months

FAISALABAD, Sep 08 (APP):The regional police traced 9,392 cases including 236 of murder during the last seven months.
A spokesperson to the RPO office Rizwan Bhatti said here on Friday that police teams recovered stolen property worth about Rs 700 million in aforementioned cases.
The police held 7,000 proclaimed offenders including 234 involved in murder cases, 3 in dacoity cum murder, 640 in highway robberies during the period.
As many as 3,995 drug peddlers were nabbed and 2.5kg heroin, 1,415kg hashish, and 32,721 liter liquor was recovered from their possession.
During crackdown against illicit weapons, 2,238 outlaws were arrested red handed and illicit weapons were recovered from them.
He said that police teams also arrested over 250 accused including 6 main accused involved in unrest and vandalizing the buildings in tehsil Jaranwala by responding immediately.
The regional police also provided security cover to 1528 majalis and 4402 processions during Muharram-ul-Haram.
The police redressed the complaints of 2412 citizens in open courts under open door policy. At least 126 children of martyred police officials were recruited in the police department under family claims.
The police department arranged the facility of health screening to 14,487 police personnel and provided the treatment facilities to ailing officials.
As many as 368 head constables were promoted to Assistant Sub Inspectors (ASI) while 143 ASI were promoted to the rank of Sub-Inspectors.

KIIR remembers Shaikh Tajamul-ul-Islam on his death anniversary

MIRPUR (AJK): Sep 08 (APP)::Chairman Kashmir Institute of International Relations (KIIR), Altaf Hussain Wani has paid rich tributes to veteran Kashmiri intellectual and former KMS Director Shaikh Tajamul-ul-Islam on his second death anniversary.
In a statement issued here Friday, the KIIR chief while lauding his contribution to the Kashmir cause, said that Islam was one of the pioneers of the freedom struggle who rendered his service for the noble cause while working on political, diplomatic and journalistic fronts.
Wani said, “Sheikh Sahib was a genuine intellectual, thinker and writer par excellence who had significantly contributed to the Kashmir cause”.
He said that Sheikh Sahib has left behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire the coming generations. His demise, he said, had left a huge void that could not be filled easily.

IGHDS to hold Quran Khwani for departed soul of Quaid-e-Azam

SUKKUR, Sep 08 (APP):The Inter Global Human Development Society (IGHDS) Sukkur will arrange Quran Khawani for the departed soul of the father of the Nation Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah on his death anniversary at IGHDS’s regional office Sukkur on September 11.
A good number of notables, elected representatives, journalists, lawyers and members of civil society were expected to attend the proceedings and participate in collective dua, said a statement here on Friday.

Jaranwala incident: Chief secretary ordered to decide plea for judicial commission in 15 days

LAHORE, Sep 08 (APP):The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Friday ordered chief secretary Punjab to decide a petition, seeking formation of a judicial commission to probe the Jaranwala incident, within 15 days.
Justice Muhammad Sajid Mehmood Sethi passed the orders during the hearing of a petition filed by an organization, Christians’ True Spirit, after a law officer informed that no judicial commission had been formed to probe the incident yet.
The petitioner-organization had submitted that the current process for the investigation of the Jaranwala tragedy was slow. It requested the court to issue directions for the formation of a judicial commission to ensure fair investigation and timely justice.

Accused killed in police custody, SHO suspended

FAISALABAD, Sep 08 (APP):An accused of different theft cases was killed in the custody of Garh police.
City Police Officer (CPO) Usman Akram Gondal has suspended the SHO Garh and ordered an inquiry in this regard.
Police spokesman Sub Inspector (SI) Naveed Ahmad said here on Friday that Garh police was investigating an accused, Jahangir son of Waryam Pawli resident of Thatha Tarkhana Tandlianwala, who was wanted to the police in theft cases. However, during investigation, the accused was killed.
Following the incident, relatives of Jahangir Waryam staged demonstration and alleged that the police officials severely tortured the arrested accused due to which he died.
Taking serious notice, the CPO immediately suspended SHO Garh and directed the SP Sadar Division to probe into the matter and submit its reports on urgent basis, spokesman added.
