Rapid urbanization threatens country’s agriculture heartland

0

MULTAN, Sep 09 (APP): Agriculture, the backbone of Pakistan’s economy, is facing a multitude of challenges, and one of the most pressing issues is the unchecked development of residential societies on fertile land.

This ominous trend not only jeopardizes food security but also diminishes agricultural productivity, casting a shadow over the livelihoods of millions.

Roughly 68% of Pakistan’s population residing in rural areas is directly or indirectly dependent on the agriculture sector.

This sector contributes nearly 20% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), with more than 60% of its produce being exported.

However, Pakistan grapples with a crisis of low agricultural productivity. Despite sharing similar climatic conditions with neighboring countries, our average crop yields fall significantly short.

For instance, in Punjab, Pakistan’s breadbasket, the average wheat yield per acre is approximately 31 Maunds, while just across the border neighourly Punjab, it soars to about 45 Maunds.

Even within our own borders, disparities are stark. Progressive farmers are achieving 50-70 percent higher yields compared to their peers.

According to the South Punjab Agriculture Sub-Secretariat, a forward-thinking mango grower can harvest 250 Maunds of mangoes per acre, whereas others manage only 162 Maunds per acre.

Pakistan’s agriculture sector grapples with a myriad of challenges, including poor seed quality, expensive inputs, imbalanced fertilizer use, excessive pesticide application, soil degradation, erosion, rapid urbanization with the establishment of housing societies on fertile land near cities, inadequate canal water distribution, limited access to credit, lack of inter-cropping, deficiencies in agricultural advisory services, ineffective regulatory oversight, insufficient focus on high-value crops, lack of support pricing for various crops, low mechanization levels, convoluted subsidy systems, the absence of cluster or corporate farming initiatives, outdated research methodologies, and inefficiencies in various agricultural departments.

Among these pressing issues, the encroachment of housing societies on arable land stands out as a grave concern.

Dr Asif Ali, Vice Chancellor (VC) of Muhammad Nawaz Sharif University of Agriculture, warned, “Fertile land is being converted into housing units, requiring extensive efforts and investments to restore soil fertility.”

He suggested that the government should reconsider its policies, focusing on the development of new cities rather than residential societies on valuable farmland.

“Such a move aligns with both sustainable development principles and Islamic teachings, which advocate the establishment of new cities,” he argued.

Dr Asif also pointed out, “The encroachment of housing societies on fertile land not only compromises biodiversity and the existing landscape but also poses a significant threat to food security.”

He called for thorough site assessments, ecological balance preservation, and the promotion of fruit tree planting in newly planned cities. Vertical construction trends should also be encouraged to optimize land use.

“Progressive farmer Laique Shiekhana echoes these concerns, emphasizing that mango orchards, once a natural beauty of the Multan district, have been erased from thousands of acres in South Punjab due to urban expansion.”

He advocated strict bans on housing societies on fertile land, given the formidable challenges involved in preparing and maintaining such land for agriculture.

Mian Ishnaaq Watto, another progressive farmer, calls for immediate action to curb the conversion of fertile land into residential areas.

He pointed out, “Many housing societies are encroaching upon areas traditionally used for vegetable cultivation, further threatening the agricultural sector’s productivity.”

SFJ mobilizes thousands for Khalistan voting in Canada’s Vancouver

Khalistan voting in Canada
VANCOUVVER, CANADA, Sep 09 (APP):Another Khalistan referendum, organized by the US-based Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) group, is set to take place in Vancouver, Canada, on September 10 (Monday) in Surrey BC at the Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara.
This is the same Gurdwara that Hardeep Singh Nijjar, head of the Canadian Chapter of Khalistan Referendum, was the President of and was assassinated on June 18. Pro-Khalistan Sikh groups have accused the Indian government of being behind the killing of a famous Khalistani activist.
A US-based secessionist group, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has said, “It hopes that the Khalistan Referendum voting at Guru Nanak Sikh Gurdwara will attract a historic number of Sikhs who live in Vancouver.”
It’s estimated that more than 750,000 Sikhs live in Canada – the largest number outside of India – but Sikh groups say, “The real number is around one million, who have left India to make Canada their home.”
These referendums, initiated at the UK’s Queen Elizabeth Centre in 2021, have been conducted in more than two dozen cities worldwide.
A similar referendum occurred in London in November 2021, with an estimated participation of 10,000-12,000 individuals.
Over the past three years, the voting process has transformed into a mobile event within Sikh communities, involving approximately 208,000 Sikhs across various countries. These referendums aim to support the liberation of Indian Punjab and the establishment of an autonomous Sikh state.
The referendum voting has occurred in five UK cities, as well as in France (Paris), Italy, Switzerland, and three cities each in Canada and Australia.
In India, Sikhs are a religious minority within the 1.4 billion population but constitute the religious majority in the state of Punjab, where Hinduism is the second most practiced faith. The referendum’s goal is to secure agreement within Sikh communities for the creation of Khalistan, a separate homeland within India, often proposed through the partition of Punjab, the only Sikh-majority state.
Established in 2007, SFJ is led by Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a law graduate from Panjab University practicing as an attorney in the United States. In 2018, the group announced ‘Referendum 2020’, seeking the liberation of Punjab from Indian occupation. The first Khalistan referendum took place in the UK in October 2021, with 30,000 Sikh participants.
A similar event occurred in Geneva in December 2021, where over 6,000 individuals voted for a sovereign Sikh state. Italy saw the participation of 62,000 Sikhs, and Canada recorded a significant turnout of approximately 110,000 participants.
In support of the demand for a separate Sikh homeland, more than 17,000 Sikhs voted for the Khalistan Referendum in Rome, Italy. The UK, with a substantial Sikh diaspora, organized campaigns under the advocacy of SFJ. Over 42,000 Canadian Sikhs participated in the Khalistan Referendum in Malton, Mississauga, in July.
The roots of these referendums trace back to the traumatic event of Operation Blue Star in 1984 when the Indian army stormed the holiest Sikh shrine, the ‘Golden Temple’, ostensibly to capture alleged terrorists. This operation resulted in the loss of innocent Sikh lives and a profound disrespect for Sikh sentiments.
Many Sikhs sought refugee in countries like the UK, Canada, Italy, and the US to escape the insecurity in their homeland.
Mass genocide and extrajudicial killings have been employed by the Modi regime against the Sikh community. In response, Sikh diaspora groups like SFJ have organized referendums, protests, and advocacy efforts to assert Sikh rights on various platforms. The Punjab Referendum Commission (PRC) has been established to facilitate fair voting for this fundamental demand.
For India to genuinely uphold democratic principles, it should recognize the results of the Sikh referendums, potentially paving the way for an official referendum on the matter. This would align with the principles of freedom, human rights, and liberties that democracies uphold.
India’s suppression of these movements and referendums infringes upon the rights of its minorities and denies them the right to self-determination through peaceful means.

Fai urges G20 to push for all parties’ dialogue for Kashmir’s peaceful settlement

Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai
WASHINGTON, Sep 09 (APP):A prominent Kashmiri leader Friday called on the G20 leaders’ summit to end its neglect of the decades-old Kashmir dispute and push for a dialogue between all parties concerned — India, Pakistan, and Kashmiri people’s leadership —  to set a stage for its democratic and peaceful solution.
“Kashmir is a political issue which needs a political solution,” Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, Secretary-General of the World Kashmir Awareness Forum, a Washington-based advocacy group, said in a statement at the event of the summit being held in New Delhi.
He said “Some of the immediate requirements for such a dialogue include International community’s intervention to bring the violence in Kashmir to a quick end, Demilitarization of the State of Jammu and Kashmir on both sides of the cease-fire line, and, Release of all political prisoners namely Mohammad Yasin Malik, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, Masarat Aalam, Aasia Andrabi, and Khurram Parvez.”
“The leadership of G20 countries need to realize that there is still a great opportunity for peace in Kashmir, but it cannot occur unless the people of Kashmir are permitted to have their own identity,” Fai said.
“Were India to allow a referendum in Kashmir, — as called for by the UN resolutions —  it would prove to the world that it too is a great democratic country, and not the persistent and militaristic oppressor that it has become,” he added.
In his statement, Fai cited several world leaders and key international officials as well as academics drawing attention to the lingering Kashmir dispute and warning of the dangers to international peace and stability if it was left unresolved.
“The denial of democracy and human rights in Kashmir, especially self-determination, has spawned nuclear and missile proliferation,” he warned.
“Kashmir has been an open wound in India-Pakistan relations for more than 76 years, that is why Amnesty International, along with four other international NGO’s,  wrote to G20 countries on August 24, to persuade India to ‘end the human rights violations in Kashmir and release jailed rights defenders and political prisoners’, Fai said.
On Thursday, the White House National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, Admiral John Kirby, was asked whether President Joe Biden, in his bilateral meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi,   would raise the Kashmir issue as well as the growing human rights  abuses in the disputed territory.
Kirby told reporters at the Foreign Press Center  that the U.S. policy on the Kashmir issue had not changed.
“We believe that the tensions there are best resolved by the parties themselves,” he said.
“Human rights are a cornerstone of President Biden’s foreign policy, and he never shies away, nor will he ever shy away from raising concerns about human rights with his counterparts overseas,” he said.
“And that was the case when Prime Minister Modi visited Washington not long ago, and it will be the case going forward. I mean, he absolutely will not shy away from mentioning our concerns and raising our concerns about civil and human rights all around the world, including there (Kashmir),”  Kirby said.
Asked if he would urge Indian leaders to resume talks with Pakistan, he said, “That’s for Indian leaders to speak to.”
