SC declares land acquisition for Dadocha Dam as legal

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday declared that the acquisition of land for the construction of Dadocha Dam as legal and instructed for a fresh estimation of its value to pay compensation to the owners.

The apex court, in a 12-page order written by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, said that the notification for acquiring the land for public interest could be issued in the official gazette.

It said that the notification issued for acquiring of the land was as per the law.

The court also ordered the authorities to estimate the fresh compensation keeping in view the increasing value of the said land.

It may be mentioned that the owners had challenged the land acquisition.

CM Domki directs ministers to improve performance

QUETTA, Sep 12 (APP): Balochistan Caretaker Chief Minister Mir Ali Mardan Khan Domki on Tuesday directed all the interim ministers to improve the performance of their ministries to facilitate the masses.

He expressed these views while chairing the first meeting of the introductory of the Provincial Cabinet here.

Addressing the cabinet meeting, the Caretaker Chief Minister said that we all know that the first responsibility of the caretaker government is to establish a peaceful environment.

He said that it is also our responsibility to provide support to the Election Commission for conducting fair and transparent elections.

“I am happy that experienced people like you in the cabinet are part of my team”, he noted, adding that we all have to perform our duties while keeping our mandate in front, our mandate included conducting fair and transparent elections as well as improving governance.

He said that ministers should improve the governance and efficiency of their respective departments and they should send reports to them regularly while monitoring the performance of their departments.

The CM said that our joint ventures will improve the execution of government affairs saying that it is a constitutional requirement that we ensure the implementation of the guidelines given by the Election Commission, under this guideline, we should not go out of our powers.

It is the responsibility of S&GAD to provide houses and offices to all Interim provincial ministers and advisers, he said, and added that ministers should not make any demands from their departments that will create a negative impression.

He said that the caretaker ministers should immediately take back the vehicles and staff of their respective departments used by the former ministers saying that the unnecessary expenses of the departments should be eliminated.

He said that all the ministers should not only work regularly in their offices but also make the officers and officials of the department adhere to the office hours adding that ministers should keep their doors open for common people and citizens and try to solve their problems.

The cabinet is the biggest forum of the province and the decisions made here will also be important, he said and added that through the Chief Secretary, all secretaries are instructed to implement the decisions of the cabinet immediately.

He said that in this regard, any kind of negligence and slowness will be taken strict notice.

Nawaz Sharif to return to Pakistan on October 21: Shehbaz

Shehbaz Sharif, in a statement, said the PML-N Quaid would be accorded a warm welcome upon his arrival in the homeland.

Madad launches drug awareness, curtailment campaign in academic institutions

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): Caretaker Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Madad Ali Sindhi on Tuesday chaired a high-level meeting to take effective measures to curtail the spread of drugs in academic institutions across the nation.

Anti Narcotics Force Deputy Inspector General, the Higher Education Commission (HEC) Executive Director, the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE) Deputy Director General, and representatives from the Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority (PEIRA) attended the meeting. Senior officials of the ministry including Additional Secretary Junaid Ikhlaq and Senior Joint Secretary Abdul Sattar Khokhar were also present.

Madad said we had launched a comprehensive campaign to spread awareness about the issue and further take practical and decisive actions to curtail drug usage in academic institutions across the country.

He emphasized the role of HEC, PEIRA, and FDE to control the spread of drugs in academic institutions. He ordered all of these bodies to conduct a comprehensive exercise to identify the problematic areas in collaboration with the ANF. He said we needed to understand the spread of the problem first before we devised a strategy to curtail it.

Madad said youngsters in Europe were dying on the roads because of this problem.

He said we had not reached that point yet and we would ensure that we could control this issue before it got out of hands. He said there were almost 250,000 students in the Federal Public Schools that should be put at top priority.

He directed the FDE to table a comprehensive report on the spread and use of drugs in public schools. He said all of these students were the future of Pakistan and we could not let them waste their potential due to drugs.

Madad was briefed by the representatives of FDE, PEIRA, and HEC about their policies regarding drug use control. He was told that all three institutions had detailed policies that were in place to curb the spread of drugs.

He was informed that the issue remained in the implementation of the policies. He directed all the officials to establish a common forum to oversee the efforts to eradicate drug use in educational institutions.

ANF DIG Rommel Akram told the minister that ANF was able to seize 80% of the total drugs in Pakistan, adding the ANF faced a serious issue of resources as it only had 1972 employees.

He said even though ANF had limited resources, it was able to outperform. He emphasized the need for collaboration between the academic institutions and ANF.

He said drug use was a menace that even the United States of America had not been able to control even with 1.5 times the expenditure of the Gross Domestic Product of Pakistan.

He said, on the direction of the minister, ANF would provide total support to the academic institutions and a forum for collaboration between HEC, FDE, PEIRA, ministry, and ANF would be formulated.

PIMS receives five more dengue patients

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) has received five more dengue patients during the last 24 hours.

According to PIMS ED spokesperson Dr Mubashir Mushtaq Daha, a total of seven dengue patients were admitted to the hospital.

He said that keeping in view the sudden increase in the number of dengue patients, 10 further beds in medical ward II have been allocated for dengue patients.

He said that the Executive Director of PIMS Prof. Dr Rana Imran Sikandar has made all necessary arrangements to manage dengue cases keeping in view the prevailing high-risk season of disease spread.

He said that the ED had directed the hospital staff to ensure the implementation of the plan prepared to handle the dengue patients at the hospital.

He said that the ED PIMS was personally supervising all preparations to prevent patients from any inconvenience in treatment.

The ED assured that like in previous years, the hospital would provide the best medical care to dengue patients this year, Dr Daha added.

“The hospital is committed to serving the patients with full care and special steps have been taken in this regard,” the spokesperson added.

According to a press statement issued by the finance ministry, both sides discussed various avenues for strengthening economic ties and shared mutual commitment to fostering closer relations between the two nations.

72 new Corona cases reported in last week

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): Health officials on Tuesday said that 72 new coronavirus cases were reported during the last week across the country.

As per data shared by the National Institute of Health (NIH), the case positivity ratio was 0.85 percent while two patients were in critical condition.

No death was reported from the coronavirus while 8,458 Covid-19 tests were conducted.

Meanwhile, the official of the Ministry for National Health Services, Regulations, and Coordination said that the government had strengthened the role of Border and Health Services in Pakistan to deal with any sub-variant of COVID-19.

He said there was a surveillance system at all entry points of the country including airports.

There will be rapid tests and screening of passengers at all airports. He added 90 percent of the country’s population already got the Covid-19 vaccine.

IIUI expands banking services for student’s convenience

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): International Islamic University Islamabad (IIUI) Tuesday introduced two additional banks, Faysal Bank and Bank Al Falah, to streamline the fee payment process for students in a significant move towards enhancing student-centric services.

Male students can now deposit their fees at any branch of Habib Bank Limited and Faysal Bank Limited across Pakistan without incurring any charges.

Likewise, female students can avail of this facility at any branch of Allied Bank Limited and Bank Al-Falah Limited without fees.

Both banks will soon set up operational booths at the student facilitation center, with the official branch inauguration scheduled for the beginning of the next month.

The decision to introduce these new banking services was made during a meeting chaired by IIUI President, Dr. Hathal Homoud Alotaibi, held at the university’s council hall.

The meeting was attended by Vice President of Administration and Finance, Dr. N.B. Jumani, in charge of Finance, and his team members.

The IIUI president emphasized that student facilitation remained a top priority, and the university was committed to adopting advanced options to support quality education.

He praised the hard work of the team and directed them to eliminate all obstacles related to fee payment.

He stressed the importance of embracing mobile apps and digital banking, emphasizing the need for a one-click approach to benefit both parents and students.

During the meeting, it was revealed that after implementing the Campus Management System, students would have the freedom to deposit fees in any bank of their choice across Pakistan, provided the bank was associated with the university.

These four banks include HBL, ABL, Bank Al-Falah, and Faysal Bank. The IIUI president urged the swift implementation of this option for students across both campuses.

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): U.S. Ambassador to Pakistan Donald Blome on Tuesday visited Gwadar to underscore the United States’ commitment to the people of Balochistan, a partnership that remains steadfast and robust.

The visit explored opportunities to enrich development, trade, and commercial ties, building on the successful outcomes that underpin the robust U.S.-Pakistan bilateral relationship, according to a news release.

In the face of last year’s devastating floods, the United States helped 661,000 individuals, providing both food and much-needed cash assistance. And nearly 90,000 children were given nourishing meals to combat the threat of starvation.

Over the past year, with U.S. support, 41 health facilities were successfully renovated. In the field of education, U.S. support is strengthening programs at BUITEMS and Sardar Bahadur Khan Women’s University, and empowering the next generation of youth by developing literacy and education materials in Balochi and various local languages.

During his visit, the Ambassador held productive discussions with political leaders, representatives from the Gwadar Chamber of Commerce, and a diverse group of government and private sector leaders.

In his meeting with political leaders, the Ambassador reiterated U.S. support for Balochistan’s development, touching on economic growth, disaster relief and preparedness; security; the benefits of U.S. trade and investment; and measures Pakistan can take to strengthen and improve its investment climate.

Ambassador Blome’s meeting with members of the Gwadar Chamber of Commerce focused on ways to increase U.S. trade and investment in the region’s business, logistics, tourism, fisheries, and blue economy sectors.

The group shared how growing these business-to-business relationships can help create inclusive, Pakistani-led growth that supports jobs across Balochistan.

They also discussed how deepening business partnerships can enhance technical skills in Balochistan and help increase bilateral trade.

In his meetings with government and business leaders, Ambassador Blome discussed the U.S.-Pakistan “Green Alliance” framework, which is helping our countries jointly meet climate, energy, water, and economic needs.

“We are especially focused on supporting Balochistan and all of Pakistan as it strengthens climate resilience, pursues energy transformation, and fosters inclusive economic growth,” Ambassador Blome said.

Under the Green Alliance, U.S. assistance has helped more than 12,000 farmers, including many in Balochistan, across 2,000 hectares increase yields and reduce harvest and post-harvest losses through improved technology and management practices.

Ambassador Blome also visited Gwadar Port and met with Port Authority Chairman Pasand Khan Buledi to learn about port operations and development plans, Gwadar’s potential as a regional trans-shipment hub, and ways to connect with Pakistan’s largest export market: the United States.

In a meeting with Pakistan Naval West Command, Ambassador Blome discussed regional issues and emphasized a continued partnership in the years ahead.

SC directs high court to decide sugar price case within 30 days

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP):The Supreme Court (SC) on Tuesday directed the high court to hear cases on a daily basis pertaining to price fixation of sugar and decide the case within 30 days.
A three-member bench headed by Justice Ijaz ul Ahsan heard the case pertaining to the price of sugar in the country.
At the outset of the hearing, the counsel of Sugar Mills adopted the stance that the identical case was fixed for a hearing on September 20 before the high court.
The additional attorney general (AAG) said that the top court had ordered to submit the difference in sugar price before it, adding that the high court had also suspended the prices fixed by the provincial government.
He said that the sugar price was Rs98 per kilogram but the sugar mills were now selling it at Rs200 per Kg.
The AAG prayed the court to issue directives for submission of the report to the registrar’s office of the top court pertaining to the difference in the price. At this, Justice Ahsan observed that why there was haste in it, the high court would take the decision after hearing the case.
The AAG said that the recovery in price would be difficult with the passage of time. The court subsequently ordered the high court to hear the case on a daily basis and announced the verdict in 30 days.
