KP Assembly outperforms other provincial assemblies in legislative business during 2018-23: PILDAT

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP):  Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly outranked all other provincial assemblies in terms of legislation by passing a total of 188 bills during 2018-23, followed by Punjab Assembly  (180 bills), Sindh Assembly (149 bills) and Balochistan Assembly (96 bill).

Balochistan Assembly was the only provincial assembly to complete its five-year term until August 12, 2023, according to a brief comparative analysis of the performance of four Provincial Assemblies for the period (2018-2023) compiled by Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT).

While the Provincial Assemblies of Punjab and KP were dissolved prematurely on January 14 and January 18, 2023 respectively, the Sindh Assembly too was dissolved just before the conclusion of its term on August 11, 2023, it added.

In terms of the status of transparency and access to information by four Provincial Assemblies, KP Assembly outranked all other Provincial Assemblies with a score of 8.5 out of 11, followed by the Punjab Assembly which ranked second with a score of 7 out of 11, Balochistan Assembly ranked third by securing 6.5 score out of 11 and Sindh Assembly ranked at last number with 5.5 score.

Out of the four Provincial Assemblies, only the Punjab Assembly had provided complete attendance records of Members of Provincial Assembly (MPAs) on its website.

Sindh Assembly outranked other three Provincial Assemblies in terms of sittings held during five-years of its term as it convened 326 sittings with an average of 65 sittings per year, followed by Punjab Assembly (274 sittings) with an average of 62 sittings per year,  KP Assembly (248  sittings) with an average of 56 sittings per year.

1,423 power pilferers arrested

FAISALABAD, Sep 21 (APP):The Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (FESCO) has arrested 1,423 power pilferers from its region during the last 16 day.
Spokesman Tahir Sheikh said here on Thursday that on special instructions of Ministry of Energy (Power Division), the FESCO had launched a crackdown on electricity theft across its region comprised of eight districts including Faisalabad, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Chiniot, Sargodha, Mianwali, Khushab and Bhakkar.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) FESCO Engineer Bashir Ahmed had activated special teams to nab maximum power pilferers.
The teams conducted surprise checking of electricity supply meters across the region and detected electricity theft at 1,423 points where the accused were stealing power by using different modes including direct supply, tampering meter body, shunt system, etc.
He said that a fine of Rs.174.8 million was imposed on then for more than 3964000 detection units.
He further said that cases were registered against 1306 power pilferers, out of them 144 were arrested during this period.
Giving further details, he said that the FESCO teams caught 94 power pilferers during last 24 hours and imposed Rs.10.8 million on them as fine of more than 235,000 detection units.
He said that FESCO teams also recovered Rs. 142 million from the defaulter during recovery campaign.

OGRA strongly rejects misinformation campaign

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP): Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) on Thursday strongly denied the false propaganda circulating on social and national media, evidently aimed at maligning the organization and diverting attention from its actions against illegal and malicious activities of illegal smuggling of Iranian oil and use of flare gas.

In an official statement, a spokesperson emphasized that OGRA maintained a profound dedication to its core mission, which involved transparently regulating and overseeing Pakistan’s oil and gas sector with the highest standards of integrity and diligence.

The OGRA remains unwavering in efforts to ensure safety, compliance and fairness for all stakeholders and the nation.

He urged the public and media to seek accurate information and refrain from spreading harmful misinformation that could damage the reputation of an institution dedicated to safeguarding Pakistan’s energy consumers and promoting a responsible oil and gas sector.

The OGRA spokesperson expressed concern that a few self-proclaimed troublemakers are misleading the public with disinformation. He urged the media to verify OGRA’s stance before broadcasting or publishing news related to the oil and gas sector.

He emphasized that OGRA’s primary goals included promoting competition, encouraging private investment and ownership in the mid and downstream petroleum industry and safeguarding public interests through effective and efficient regulations.

He pointed out that OGRA was indirectly overseeing a significant portion, approximately one-third, of the government’s economy, with the Oil and Gas sector’s market share exceeding $25 billion annually.

He pledged to persist in fostering a secure, progressive and competitive oil and gas industry through close collaboration with all stakeholders. This commitment aims to protect the interests of the nation and maintain the trust of its citizens.

Pakistan, China express strong resolve to enhance mutual cooperation for development, security

ISLAMABAD, Sep 21 (APP): Pakistan and China have reiterated their strong resolve to further enhance the existing excellent cooperation between the two countries. This was expressed in a bilateral meeting between caretaker Interior Minister Sarfraz Ahmad Bugti and his Chinese counterpart Wang Xiao Hong, Member of the Secretariat of CPC Central Committee, State Councilor and Minister for Public Security in Lianyungang City on the occasion of Global Public Security Cooperation Forum 2023 here Thursday.

Federal Interior Minister, while responding to welcome remarks by the host minister, thanked the Chinese government for their warm welcome and hospitality to Pakistan’s delegation.

Bugti further said that China was a time tested and all weather strategic friend and expressed profound appreciation on behalf of the government and people of Pakistan for the unwavering and unconditional support of the government and the people of China for Pakistan during all challenges.

Sarfraz Bugti briefed the host minister about various steps undertaken by Pakistan to ensure the foolproof security of Chinese in Pakistan who are working on various projects for a better future of people of Pakistan.
The Chinese Minister appreciated the strong resolve of the government of Pakistan and various measures taken by it to counter the threat of terrorism, drugs, and risks to the security of Chinese nationals and installations.

He expressed the hope that Pakistan and China can explore more avenues through capacity building and joint cooperation to defeat the nefarious designs of inimical elements.

The minister thanked the Chinese counterparts for their understanding of challenges and assistance in overcoming these challenges.

13 drug peddlers netted with 13 kg charras

RAWALPINDI, Sep 21 (APP):Rawalpindi police in an action against suspected drug peddlers conducted raids in different areas and rounded up 13 accused on recovery of over 13 kg charras.
According to a police spokesman, City police held Yousaf for having 1250 grams charras while Sadiqabad police rounded up Naeem for carrying 1200 grams charras.
Waris Khan police also recovered 1100 grams charras from the possession of a drug peddler namely Nasir.
Similarly, Naseerabad police conducted a raid and arrested Nafees for possessing 1260 grams charras.
Civil Lines, Saddar Wah, Gujar Khan, Jatli, Dhamial, Gungmandi, Race Course, Rawat and Kalar Syedan police netted Husnain, Faisal, Muhammad Waseem, Sohail, Khurram, Zahid, Sahib Ali, Haider Shah and Ahtesham and recovered nearly nine kg charras from their possession.
Separate cases have been registered against all accused while further investigations are underway.
City Police Officer, Rawalpindi had directed the police officers to accelerate ongoing operations against drug peddlers, bootleggers and other lawbreakers, he added.
