


ISLAMABAD, Nov 14 (APP): A 5-member delegation of Asian Development Bank (ADB), headed by its Country Director Yong Ye, called on Chairman WAPDA Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) on Monday and discussed financing of various WAPDA projects.
The delegation was briefed about clean and green energy generation plan of WAPDA to add low-cost cheap and environment-friendly hydel electricity to the National Grid for stabilizing power tariff in the country, said a press release.
The delegation was apprised that WAPDA projects have excellent investment opportunities. The delegation was further informed about the innovative financing strategy for under-construction WAPDA projects, Diamer Basha Dam and Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project in particular, and investment opportunities therein for international financial institutions.
The portfolio of WAPDA’s upcoming projects, including Patan and Thakot Hydropower Projects, was also presented to the delegation for Projects Readiness Financing by ADB. The matters relating to financing of Naulong Dam Project were also discussed during the meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, the Country Director said that ADB and WAPDA have been partners in progress of water and hydropower resources in Pakistan since long. The delegation, during the meeting, showed keen interest in financing of WAPDA projects.
Member (Finance) WAPDA and Member (Power) WAPDA were also present on the occasion.
ISLAMABAD, Nov 14 (APP): Pakistan and the European Union have agreed to launch a comprehensive dialogue on migration and mobility.
The agreement was reached during a two-day visit of European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson to Pakistan. The commissioner held meetings with law enforcement bodies and UN agencies on a broader spectrum of bilateral questions on migration and security.
Pakistan and the EU wish to strengthen mutual cooperation in all areas relating to migration ranging from a regional point of view to international, said a news release on Monday.
“The European Union (EU) and Pakistan agreed to launch a comprehensive dialogue on migration and mobility. This will encompass all relevant aspects of migration management including legal pathways for migration to Europe and addressing irregular migration and human smuggling.
The two sides agreed to continue enhanced cooperation on return, readmission and reintegration through the full and effective implementation of the Pakistan-EU readmission agreement, the release said.
Commissioner Johansson and Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Hina Rabbani Khar agreed to intensify preparations for the launch of a Talent Partnership with Pakistan to facilitate working and living in interested EU Member States for suitably qualified Pakistani nationals.
Commissioner Johansson thanked Pakistani Government for their generosity in hosting 3 million Afghans, 1.3 million of whom are refugees.
The Commissioner held discussions with Federal Ministers and Secretaries of Interior; Overseas and Human Resource Development, Education and Professional Training about possibilities for legal and safe pathways of migration to Europe.
With Minister Rabbani Khar, Commissioner Johansson agreed to intensify the concrete bilateral cooperation in security, including counter-terrorism and fighting criminal networks including the fight against the smuggling of migrants.
The Commissioner visited Peshawar where she exchanged views with the Frontier Corps and the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
She was briefed about the fight against terrorism and organised crime and on border management.
Commissioner Johansson agreed with the Minister of State that the first EU-Pakistan counter-terrorism dialogue since 2018 will be held in the beginning of 2023 in Islamabad.
A broad exchange of views on migration and Afghan refugees with several UN agencies completed the Commissioner’s first visit to Pakistan.
PESHAWAR, Nov 14 (APP): The campaign to protect children from intestine related diseases by administering them deworming tablets has been initiated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with a target of covering 7.8 million children.
According to a press release issued here on Monday, Special Secretary P&D Abidullah Kakakhel inaugurated the campaign.
During the campaign deworming tablets would be given to children in 25,000 schools, both private and public, besides students from religious seminaries in 22 districts of the province would also be administered tablets.
School going children studying in class one to ten and out of school children in the age range of five to 14 years would be given deworming medicine till November 18.
Speaking on the occasion, Special Secretary Abidullah Kakakhel said quality medicine would be given to target children during the campaign.
Provision of medicine at school is a easy approach to target maximum number of children in protection of them from different diseases of intestine by riding them of from helminths parasites such as roundworm, flukes and tapeworm.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Imran Yousafzai in his speech said according to World Health Organization (WHO) around 1.5 billion people in the world or one among in every four persons are faced with intestine related diseases.
Out of these 1.5 billion infected people around 830 million children were in need of treatment, Imran Yousafzai added.
These diseases usually occurs due to poor hygienic conditions and school going children are the most affectees.
Focal Person for KP Deworming Programme Dr. Attaullah Khan said that according to a survey, around 170 children in Pakistan out of which around 7.8 million are in KP were found in need for treatment of intestinal diseases.
The deworming campaign in KP is being supervised by a multi sectoral steering committee headed by Health Department of the province, Dr. Attaullah added.
