Nearly 50,000 migrants died in search of ‘better life’ since 2014: UN agency

0

UNITED NATIONS, Nov 25 (APP): At least 50,000 migrants died while undertaking risking journeys in search of a “better life” across the world since 2014, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), a Geneva-based UN agency.

The tragic milestone was confirmed in a new IMO report on Missing Migrants Project, which also maintains that little action had been taken by any country of origin, transit or arrival.

“While thousands of deaths have been documented across migration routes each year, very little has been done to address the consequences of these tragedies, let alone prevent them,” Julia Black, co-author of the study, said in a statement.

The nationality for over 30,000 people in the Missing Migrants Project is unknown, which means that more than 60 per cent of those who die on migratory routes remain unidentified. Thousands of families are left “searching for answers”, IOM said.

“As time goes by, there is no news”, IOM said, quoting a Moroccan migrant in Spain in 2021 who was searching for his brother who disappeared 20 years ago on route to Europe.

Of the missing migrants whose nationality could be identified, more than 9,000 were from Africa, over 6,500 from Asia and another 3,000 from the Americas.

“Notably, the top three countries of origin – Afghanistan, Syria and Myanmar – are marked by violence, with many people fleeing their homes to seek refuge abroad”, IOM said.

More than half of the 50,000 individual deaths documented occurred on routes to and within Europe, with Mediterranean routes claiming at least 25,104 lives.

European routes also make up the largest number and proportion of missing and presumed dead migrants, with at least 16,032 recorded missing at sea and whose remains have never been recovered.

Africa is the second-deadliest region for people on the move, with more than 9,000 migration-related deaths documented since 2014. Regional household surveys indicate that these figures are almost certainly a vast undercount.

And in the Americas, nearly 7,000 deaths have been documented, 4,694 of whom were heading to the United States. The US-Mexico land border crossing alone has seen more than 4,000 deaths since 2014.

IOM has also documented another 6,200 deaths across Asia.

“Children make up more than 11 per cent of the lives lost on migratory routes in Asia, the highest proportion of any region”, according to the report.

It noted that of the 717 recorded child deaths linked to migration in the region, 436 were Rohingya refugees.

In Western Asia, at least 1,315 lives have been lost on migratory routes, many of which occurred in countries with ongoing conflicts, which make documentation of the missing extremely challenging.

At least 522 people arriving from the Horn of Africa have died in Yemen – often victims of violence – and 264 Syrian deaths have been documented during attempts to cross the Türkiye border.

IOM stressed that “obligations under international law, including the right to life, must be upheld at all times”.

The UN agency called for international solidarity in prioritizing search and rescue operations; improving and expanding regular and safe migration pathways; and ensuring that legislation prioritizes the protection and safety of people on the move.

“Regardless of the reasons that compel or drive people to move, no one deserves to die in search of a better life”, IOM’s Ms. Black said.

ISLAMABAD, Nov 24 (APP): Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique on Thursday said Pakistan Railways could not rely on its core business only as it need to use its full commercial potential to meet its financial issues.

Responding to a calling attention notice in the National Assembly, he was of the view that the said practice was applicable all over the world.

Regarding Quetta-Zohb section, the minister informed that it was closed in 1985. There was a narrow-gauge railway. The railways disposed of the track in 2008.

He went on to say that in April, 2022, the Railways decided to launch an operation but due to a lack of local administration’s support, the operation could not get successful.

He said there was a strip of 18 acres of land including the railway station and railway yard which had been encroached by the land mafia.

He said the Railways divisional superintendent of Quetta was sent to review the situation and he visited the entire area.

The department after taking the local administration and Frontier Constabulary into confidence was going to launch an effective operation to vacate the precious land of the Railways, he added.

The minister was of the opinion that operation was not the ultimate solution to the issue.

The Railways should be given permission to lease out the land of those sections where there was no chance of revival of Railways operation in the future, he added.

He said if Railways got permission to lease its certain land, it could regularize its affairs on some standard terms and conditions and it would help generate business for the Railways.

He said for this particular section, the Railways needed ROW clearance because in the future it would be the foundation of Quetta and Peshawar’s railway link.

He said Quetta and Peshawar should have directly linked instead of via Punjab. “We will restore ROW for this particular section,” he maintained.

Clarity needed for effective narrative building against extremism: Qamar Zaman Kaira

ISLAMABAD, Nov 24 (APP): Advisor to Prime Minister on Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan Qamar Zaman Kaira has said that Pakistan needs clarity and consensus on its narrative against violent extremism and all key stakeholders of the state need to show political resolve to develop a comprehensive response against this menace.

The senior PPP leader made these remarks at a roundtable consultation on the ‘Resurgence of Violent Extremism in Pakistan’ organized by Communications Research Strategies (CRS) in collaboration with the United States Institute of Peace (USIP) on Thursday at a local hotel here.

He recalled the past experiences of the years 2008-2013, a time when Pakistan successfully countered violent extremism.

The meeting also featured senior security experts, journalists, and academics, including former Director General Inter-Services Public Relations Major General (Retd) Athar Abbas, Major General (Retd) Ejaz Awan, senior academic and member of Planning Commission Dr. Ishtiaq Ahmad, and senior journalists Mehmood Jan Babar and Iftikhar Firdous.

The participants expressed concern about the resurgence of militancy in the country and offered solutions for reducing the impact of militant narratives among the public.

Participants of the consultation also noted that militant groups were increasingly resorting to the use of the latest communication technologies through digital media to further their propaganda.

Maj Gen (Retd) Athar Abbas was of the view that political stability was imperative to ensure a decline in terrorism and extremism.

Mehmood Jan Babar added that the militants were trying to use political and local grievances to mislead the people but they were failing in doing so as the public had rejected them.

Iftikhar Firdous said that the public had strongly opposed the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and do not wish to provide them any kind of legitimacy, which was very evident by the large public protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa against the outlawed group.

Building more universities indispensable for access to higher education: Ahsan Iqbal

QUETTA, Nov 24 (APP): Federal Minister for Planning Development & Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday stressed the need for higher education, especially for the youth in far-flung areas to access which he said was only possible by building more universities.

This he said while congratulating the Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE) and BUITEMS for conducting a successful conference which concluded here.

The minister graced the occasion as the chief guest.

The 3-day 36th AGM & Conference of Pakistan Society of Development Economists (PSDE) was organized by PIDE in collaboration with BUITEMS,

The theme of the conference was “Charter of Economy: Investment, Productivity, and Employability.” The collaborators and sponsors of the conference included the World Bank Group, CPEC Center of Excellence, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, IFAD, National Poverty Graduation Programme, Engro, PPAF, the Bank of Punjab, PMIC, ILO, Nafees Poly Pack, Saudi-Pak Industrial and Agricultural Investment Company, and the University of Balochistan.

Prof. Iqbal stressed the need for higher education, especially for the youth in far-flung areas which he said was only possible by building more universities.

He hoped that this conference would shed light on solutions to our problems, adding, “my[Ahsan Iqbal] experience has been that for every economist there is an opposite economist”, so the consensus is hard to come by.

He said the need of the hour was policy consistency and continuity. This key difference sets India and Bangladesh apart from us. He said that we must focus on political stability and export-led growth.

Prof. Iqbal stressed the need to focus on the 5Es:
1) Enterprise and exports
2) Equity in society through strengthened health and education. Twenty districts have been identified for accelerated growth program
3) E-Pakistan and empowerment of youth
4) Energy efficiency and conservation
5) Environment and Food Security.

Meanwhile, Nadeem ul Haque, the Vice Chancellor of Pakistan Institute of Development Economics, in his address, said that PIDE had come up with a charter of the economy. He stressed the need to ‘delink’ politics with economics, which were, according to him, separate domains. However, he acknowledged that a political consensus is needed if the charter of the economy was to be implemented.

The charter talks about, among other things, the kind of parliamentary and local governance structure we should have. Moreover, it also poses the question of whether there should be a limit on the term of a member of parliament and the structure of senate elections.
