ISLAMABAD, Dec 02 (APP): England piled up a total of 657 runs for all in 101 overs in the first innings against Pakistan at Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi on Friday.

England were 506 for 4 at the end of first day. Harry Brook (101 off 81 balls) and Ben Strokes (34 off 15 balls) were unbeaten at day end.

However English batters were able to score 151 runs on day two.

Pacer Naseem Shah was the first to pick the wicket on day two as he downed Strokes on 41 runs in the 76th over.

Shah struck again and picked up a second wicket in the 82th over when the ball whipped off Liam Livingstone’s pads and straight to deep square leg. Livingstone’s went just for 9 runs.

In the 84th over, Brook was picked out deep square leg and the third wicket came for Shah. Brook was the pick of the batters as he went on to score 153 runs off 116 balls including 19 4s and 5 6s.

Mohammad Ali also came to help and took his second wicket in by taking Will Jacks on 30 runs.

He was followed by Zahid Mahmmod who bagged Ollie Robinson (37) and James Anderson (6) wickets in the 99th and 101th overs, respectively.

Pakistani bowlers Zahid Mahmmod grabbed 4 wickets for 235 runs while Naseem Shah (3 for 140), Mohammad Ali (2 for 124) and Haris Rauf (1 for 78) at the end of first innings.

Meanwhile, Pakistani openers Abdullah Shafique (6) and Imam-ul-haq (11) were 17 for none in 6 overs at lunch.

Services’ trade deficit narrows by 38.05% as exports grow by 3.97%

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (APP):The services trade deficit shrank by 38.05 per cent as exports witnessed a growth of 3.97 per cent during the first four months of the current fiscal year as compared to the corresponding period of last year, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported.

According to PBS data, the exports from the country from July-October (2022-23) were recorded at $2,259.21 million against the exports of $2,172.85 million in July-October (2021-22), showing growth of 4.63 per cent.

On the other hand, the services’ imports declined by 11.83 per cent from US$ 3,483.37 million last year to US$3,071.13 million during the period under review.

Based on the figures, the services trade deficit was recorded at US $811.92 million this year against a deficit of US$1,310.52 million during the last fiscal year, showing a decline of 38.05 per cent.

On a year-on-year basis, the services exports during the month of October 2022 witnessed went up by 1.14 per cent to US$559.24 million against the exports of US $552.92 million during October 2021.

On the other hand, the imports decreased by 25.96 per cent from US$986.09 million last October to the US $730.12 million in October 2022, according to the data.

On a month-on-month basis, the services exports from the country went down by 2.05 per cent as compared to the exports of US $ 570.97 million in September 2022. The imports also went down by -0.94 per cent as compared to the imports of US $737.08 million in August 2022, the data revealed.

Meanwhile, during the first five months of the current fiscal year, the merchandize trade deficit witnessed a decline of 30.14 per cent and was recorded at $ 14,406 million this year against the deficit of $ 20,621 million last year.

According to PBS data, the exports from July-November (2022-23) were recorded at $11,932 million against the exports of $12,362 million in July-November (2021-22), showing decline of 3.48 percent.

On the other hand, the imports of the country decreased by 20.15 per cent during the period under review by going down from $ 32,983 million last year to $ 26,338 million during the current year.

ISLAMABAD, Dec 2 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday expressed grief over the death of the president of Jang and Geo Media Group, Imran Aslam, and paid tribute to his contribution to the field of journalism.

President Alvi prayed for the departed soul to rest in peace and for the grant of patience to the bereaved family.

Asad Majeed Khan appointed new Foreign Secretary

ISLAMABAD, Dec 02 (APP): Dr. Asad Majeed Khan has been appointed as the new Foreign Secretary, the Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson said Friday.

An official notification in this regard by the Establishment Division dated December 2, 2022 said the transfer has been made with immediate effect and until further orders. 

Asad Majeed, a BS-22 career diplomat, is presently posted as Pakistan’s ambassador to Belgium, the European Union and Luxembourg, a tweet by the FO spokesperson said. 

During his diplomatic career spanning over 34 years, Ambassador Khan has held several key diplomatic assignments. He served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States and Japan, Additional Foreign Secretary (Americas), Director General (Americas), Director General (West Asia), Pakistan’s Charge d’ Affaires ad interim to the United States, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of Pakistan, Washington D.C.; Additional Secretary (Foreign Affairs) at the President’s Secretariat, Director General (United Nations), and Minister-Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations.

Dr. Asad holds a Doctorate in International Economic and Business Law (LL.D.) from Kyushu University, Japan and has been a resource person at a number of academic institutions. He is married with two children.

 

 

 

US designates al-Qaeda, TTP leaders as global terrorists

WASHINGTON, Dec 02 (APP): The United States Thursday announced the designation of four militants of al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), as global terrorists, reaffirming Washington’s commitment to ensure that terrorist groups do not use Afghanistan as a platform for international terrorism.

“The United States is committed to using its full set of counterterrorism tools to counter the threat posed by terrorist groups operating in Afghanistan, including al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) and Tehrik-e Taliban Pakistan (TTP), as part of our relentless efforts to ensure that terrorists do not use Afghanistan as a platform for international terrorism,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

The list includes TTP’s Deputy Emir Qari Amjad, who oversees operations and militants in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

The announcement comes to a couple of days after the TTP ended the ceasefire agreed with the Pakistani government in June and resumed attacks in the country, a move denounced by the United States and the United Nations.

The others listed are: Osama Mehmood the emir of AQIS; Atif Yahya Ghouri, the deputy emir of AQIS., and Muhammad Maruf, responsible for AQIS’ recruiting branch.

“We will continue to use all relevant tools to uphold our commitment to see to it that international terrorists are not able to operate with impunity in Afghanistan,” Blinken said.

“As a result of these actions, all property and interests in property of those designated that are subject to US jurisdiction are blocked, and all US persons are generally prohibited from engaging in any transactions with them

Shazia Marri expresses grief over demise of Imran Aslam

“Imran Aslam’s distinguished services in the field of journalism will always be remembered”, Shazia Marri said.
She expressed heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the family members of the deceased.
