KARACHI, Dec 07 (APP): First Lady Samina Arif Alvi, on Wednesday, stressed on comprehensive measures at every level for promoting inclusiveness of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) in all spheres of the society.

She was addressing opening ceremony of Special Children’s Sports Gala and Scouting event organised by Institute of Holistic Rehabilitation and Inclusion (IHRI) in collaboration with World Memon Organisation at a local school.

Samina Arif Alvi said that it was vital for sustainable development of the country that inclusiveness must be promoted and participation of differently abled persons be ensured in all social, economic and political activities as over 10 percent of the population of Pakistan was facing disability in different forms or manifestations.

The first and foremost challenge that needed to be addressed was public mindset and common behaviour of society towards persons with disabilities that obstructed their growth and prospects of career building, she noted and urged people to not disrespect or ridicule such persons but encourage and support their participation in educational, social and economic activities.

Pakistan had already rectified UN convention on differently abled persons, there were certain laws and policies in place and special job quota was reserved in public sector while government and non governmental organizations were working for their facilitation and protection of their rights, she observed.

However, all the stakeholder need to focus on ensuring implementation on laws and policies in letter and spirit, further improving relevant policies, enhancing accessibility and a paradigm shift in overall social behaviour to bring the real change so that no one left behind, Samina Alvi maintained.

“We need to focus on equipping the special children with market oriented technical and vocational skills and professional training so that they instead of relying on others could be able to earn their livelihood and become productive part of society and play due role in development and prosperity of the country,” she maintained.

The parents and healthcare providers should also ensure proper check up of a newly born child to diagnose any potential signs or symptoms of disability as timely treatment could save a child from lifelong disability, she advised.

The first lady also called for an inclusive education system that support learning of differently abled children along with other children in general schools so that they could learn coping with difficulties of life.

She also urged all higher education institutions of public and private sector to facilitate enrollment of special persons in regular courses at discounted fees as per HEC policy.

Samina Arif Alvi highlighted the need of ramps in buildings, public places and transport facilities to promote mobility of differently abled persons. She further said that visually impaired children should be taught use of white cane from the early age.

She appreciated IHRI and WMO for providing education and training opportunities to special children and assured her all out support in their future endeavours.

The first lady also lauded role of media for spreading awareness and promoting idea of inclusion of differently abled persons and said that awareness made a significant difference in campaign on breast cancer.

Regional President MWO H.M Shahzad, Neurologist Ramal Kumar, Adur Razaq Pardaisi and Rahim Janu also addressed the ceremony and said that persons with disabilities were essential part of the society and their organization was taking multiple measures to bring them into mainstream so that they could play active role in development of the country.

They said that their organization would provide jobs to differently abled children in their business and industrial enterprises while a health card would also be issued to special children.

Earlier, Samina Arif Alvi visited different sections of the schools, and reviewed arrangements for special children’s sport gala and scouting event.

At the occasion, the event organisers also presented souvenir shield to Samina Arif Alvi.

US donates $7.5 mln worth medical oxygen supplies to Pakistan

0

ISLAMABAD, Dec 07 (APP): The U.S. government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), donated $7.5 million worth of medical oxygen supplies to the Ministry of National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination.

The support will also provide training to 163 hospitals throughout Pakistan to increase their capability to treat patients suffering from severe COVID-19 and other lung conditions.

This U.S. government support was received by the Federal Health Minister, Abdul Qadir Patel, in a ceremony at the Ministry of National Health Services in Islamabad.

In his remarks, Patel said, “We are thankful to the U.S. government for their continued support during COVID-19 and especially during the recent floods.”

He also expressed that these efforts reflect the strong bilateral relations between the two countries.

Addressing the Ministry of Health officials at the ceremony, Ambassador Donald Blome remarked, “Today’s donation is not just about COVID-19. It is an investment into Pakistan’s long-term health system.

This assistance – which started at the very outset of COVID, continued throughout the pandemic, and is now addressing the lasting effects of the floods on health – is a prime example of the long history of U.S. assistance to Pakistan.

The United States was there at the beginning, and we will continue to find ways to support Pakistan as it recovers and rebuilds from disasters – whether that is a global pandemic like COVID-19 or a flooding disaster like Pakistan has just experienced.”

The U.S. government donation provides thousands of essential supplies and equipment for oxygen therapy that the Ministry of Health requested.

The U.S. government will also develop a web-based information system that will allow real-time surveillance of patient oxygen levels, as well as strengthen Pakistan’s medical oxygen systems, while technical assistance provided will train public-sector staff working at intensive-care units on how to effectively use the equipment.

Wasim Jr likely to replace Haris in second Test

0

ISLAMABAD, Dec 7 (APP): All-rounder Mohammad Wasim Jr is likely to replace pacer Haris Rauf in the second Test against England, scheduled to be held at Multan Cricket Stadium from December 9.

Haris was ruled out of the remaining Test series against England due to a grade-II strain in right quad.

The fast bowler rolled over the ball while fielding during the first day’s play of the Rawalpindi Test. Therefore he would get rehabilitation at the National High Performance Centre.

Meanwhile, Haris injury was another setback for Green-shirts as they have already been missing fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi who had also got hurt during the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 final in Melbourne last month.

Afridi, landed awkwardly while taking Harry Brook’s catch during the T20 World Cup 2022 final in Melbourne and was undergoing rehabilitation.

However, coming to the replacement for Haris in the second Test, there were reports going on that fast bowler Hasan Ali might replace him in the squad.

“Hasan is not likely to be included in the team as he was already not in the players of the Test squad,” an official told APP.

He said, therefore that leaves us with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa born fast bowler, Wasim Jr. who has yet to make his Test debut. “Wasim Jr is most likely to replace Haris in the squad,” he said.

Wasim Jr had scored 34 runs in eight ODI while 26 runs in 26 T20I. He had bagged 15 wickets in ODIs and 34 in T20I.

It may be mentioned that England won the first of the three Tests on Monday by 74 runs. The second and third Tests would be played in Multan (December 9-13) and Karachi (December 17-21), respectively.
