WHO announces $43 million appeal to scale up response in quake-hit Syria, Turkiye

0

UNITED NATIONS, Feb 12 (APP): The World Health Organization (WHO), a Geneva-based UN agency, has launched a $43 million appeal to support earthquake response in Syria and Turkiye where the death toll has reportedly climbed to more than 33,000 people Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced.

The amount is set to increase as the magnitude of the disaster becomes clearer, he said, speaking during a press conference from the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to a UN press release issued at UN Headquarters in New York on Sunday afternoon.

Tedros also reported that the Syrian authorities appear open to allowing more border crossings to deliver humanitarian aid into the northwest.

War-ravaged Syria is divided into areas under the control of the Government, opposition forces and armed groups.

WHO said it is working across all areas affected by the earthquake, which struck on Monday.

The UN agency is also scaling up operations across the country, including in the northwest, where the impact is even worse.

More than 4,300 deaths and 7,600 injuries have been reported there, according to the UN humanitarian affairs office, OCHA.

Prior to the earthquake, 4.1 million people were already dependent on humanitarian aid, and their needs were at an all-time high.

Tedros stressed the need to take response “to the next level” to reach all populations in need.

He welcomed the decision by the United States to ease sanctions against Syria in the wake of the tragedy.

“We equally appreciate the recent blanket approval by the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic for the UN for cross-line convoys, as well as measures to increase cross-border access. We hope this continues,” he said.

The WHO chief reported that he had met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad earlier on Sunday afternoon “who indicated he was open to considering additional cross-border access points for this emergency.”

Tedros said he is waiting to move across conflict lines to northwest Syria.

“We’re on stand-by actually,” he told reporters. “We can move anytime now through the coastline to the northwest. Based on the blanket permit, we have already permission from this side. We’re waiting now to hear from the other side. As soon as we get that we will cross to the northwest.”

After the earthquake struck, WHO said it immediately accessed its pre-positioned supplies in the northwest and Aleppo, thus making treatment of major injuries possible. Staff also began distributing supplies to health facilities.

Tedros arrived in Syria on Saturday, where WHO and partners have so far distributed 110 tonnes of medical supplies to affected areas across the country.

A flight is scheduled to arrive in Damascus on Sunday night with vital specialized emergency health supplies for frontline workers.

The UN agency also is supporting the surge capacity of frontline specialized medical teams.

The earthquake is the latest crisis to hit Syria, following the ongoing conflict, the COVID-19 pandemic, cholera outbreaks, and economic decline.

Twelve years of war have “pulverized” the healthcare system, said Dr. Michael Ryan, WHO Emergencies Director. Prior to the earthquake, just 50 per cent of health facilities were functioning, but the true impact is much greater.

“Not only physical damage to the infrastructure itself but the exodus of health workers, the loss of salaries, loss of training,” he said. “It’s just that death by a thousand cuts to the system.”

Tedros expressed “deep respect and admiration” for the survivors, first responders and health workers, though pointing to the immense needs.

National and international organizations, but also neighbours, mosques, churches and community groups, have been racing to deliver everything from food, clean water and medical care, to a safe space for people to sleep.

Tedros was in Aleppo on Saturday and visited a WHO-supported mobile health clinic distributing medicines to people with conditions such as headaches, anxiety and difficulty sleeping

“WHO and other organizations have trained community workers to offer rapid mental health support, but much more is needed,” he said.

While in the city, according to the press release, Tedros met a young girl called Nour, who lost her parents and suffered a broken arm when their six-story apartment building collapsed, noting that she “is just one example of an unfolding tragedy that is affecting millions”.

Meanwhile, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, arrived in Damascus on Sunday on a pre-planned visit.

He affirmed that humanitarians will do all they can to access everyone who needs help and underlined his efforts to rally support.

“We are reaching out of course to bilateral countries, we are mobilizing funding and we’re trying to tell everyone put politics aside. This is a time to unite behind a common effort to support the Syrian people,” he said.

“I’m in close touch with the UN humanitarian family, we’re working together to try to mobilize this support and that of course is my key message during this visit to Syria.”

KC-EU remembers Maqbool Butt, Afzal Guru for their heroic role in Kashmir freedom struggle

KC-EU remembers Maqbool Butt, Afzal Guru for their heroic role in Kashmir freedom struggle

MIRPUR (AJK): Feb 12 (APP): Brussels-based Kashmir Council Europe (KC-EU) highly lauded the great Kashmiri martyrs Maqbool Butt and Dr Afzal Guru for their unmatchable struggle for freedom.

While addressing a gathering arranged by the council at its secretariat in Brussels on the occasion of martyrdom anniversaries of both of the prominent Kashmiri freedom figures, KC-EU’s Chairman Ali Raza Syed said, “We cannot forget our martyrs,” a message received here on Sunday said.

Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and across the world observe the martyrdom anniversary of Afzal Guru on 9th February every year. He was hanged and buried at New Delhi’s Tihar prison by the Indian Authorities on Feb 9, 2013.

Maqbool Butt was also hanged and buried in Tihar Jail on the 11th of February in 1984 for his leading role in Kashmir’s liberation struggle.

Paying rich tribute to both of the Kashmiri figures, the KC-EU head said by sacrificing their lives, Butt and Guru had offered a matchless struggle for the liberation of the beloved homeland of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ali Raza asked the Indian government to hand over the remains of Afzal Guru and Maqbool Butt to their families in Kashmir for a proper funeral and decent burial. He added the two great martyrs are lights for the struggle of the people of Kashmir for their right to self-determination.

He said Indian authorities acted inhumanely by holding the bodies of the martyrs at jail premises for a long time. No human being and no one of the civilised societies in the world accepts such ruthless behaviour as India is doing with the Kashmiris.

He said it was proved that Afzal Guru was hanged in a fake allegation and Maqbool Butt was also targeted because of his struggle for freedom of Jammu and Kashmir.

Ali Raza also warned that by killing people and committing crimes against humanity in occupied Kashmir and constant military restrictions in the Kashmir valley, India cannot stop the peaceful movement of the Kashmiris.

The people of Kashmir are struggling for the right of self-determination accepted under the UN Security Council’s resolutions and as per a promise committed by the Indian authorities.

He demanded of the world community to make necessary steps in order to stop atrocities against the innocent and peaceful people of Kashmir and play a role in a peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Govt permits FIA to arrest ex-finance minister Shaukat Tarin: Rana Sanaullah

0

KARACHI, Feb 12 (APP): Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah on Sunday said the government had allowed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to arrest the former finance minister Shaukat Tarin for a wrong deed, which could cause loss to the country.

He said an inquiry was completed against Shaukat Tarin and the permission to arrest him was granted at the request of FIA so that no one could dare to repeat the act in the future. He accused PTI chief Imran Khan of instigating Shaukat Tarin.

Rana Sanaullah was addressing a press conference after chairing a meeting on ‘Security of Foreigners’, attended among others by the Sindh Chief Secretary Dr Mohammed Sohail Rajput and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Dr Ghulam Nabi Memon at Sindh Chief Secretary’s office.

He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had chaired a meeting two days ago on the security of those working on the projects for the country’s development.

Interior Minister said the country would be on the path to development and prosperity after the completion of the projects.

While condemning a recent statement of the PTI chief, he said the country would be stronger and more stable. Imran Khan reached Islamabad on May 25 with armed men to control the capital but the people rejected him and did not accompany him to the capital, he added.

Sanaullah said this man (Imran Khan) was a political terrorist, and that Pakistan would be kept safe from both terrorists and the “political terrorist”.

Condemning the Peshawar Police Lines blast, he said that no doubt a new spate of terrorism had emerged.

Replying to a question on talks with proscribed terrorist outfits, he said that there was no sign of talks with them in view of the unsuccessful talks in the past.

Answering a question on elections, he said that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) was ready for the elections whether they were held in April or October, but it’s the responsibility of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to hold them in 90 days as per the orders of the high court.

He elaborated that the challenges of re-emerging terrorism and the economy should be reviewed before any decision.

The minister, replying to a question regarding allegations of theft against each other by PML-N and PPP in the past, said that now they had come to know that the real thief was Imran Khan. He said that Farha Gogi looted Punjab and transferred Rs 12 billon to a foreign country.

In response to a question on the arrest of former interior minister Sheikh Rasheed, he said Sheikh was apprehended as he could not prove his allegations against a big political party leader.

Replying to another question on increasing street crimes in Karachi, he said the IGP Sindh and Additional IGP Karachi had chalked out a plan to control it.

Ashrafi for action against real culprits behind Nankana Sahib incident

Pakistani-Jewish businessman permitted to proceed to Israel by PTI govt: Ashrafi

ISLAMABAD, Feb 12 (APP): Prime Minister’s Special Representative for Interfaith Harmony and Middle East Hafiz Muhammad Tahir Mehmood Ashrafi on Sunday said the government should conduct a thorough probe into the disappointing incident of lynching a person in Warburton Nankana Sahib and take stern action against the real culprits behind the scene.

He, in a video message expressing his personal views over burgeoning issues of lawlessness and citing the example of Sialkot and Khanewal, said the lack of adequate knowledge of Shariah was causing such nuisances in society.

Ashrafi who is also the chairman of the Pakistan Ulema Council said the accused of the Holy Quran desecration was a Muslim and he must have awarded punishment in the light of the Constitution instead of killing him ultra vires.

He urged the judiciary to make this an exemplary case and penalized the people allegedly involved in this heinous crime within a period of one month at the same place.

Quoting the verse from the Holy Quran, he said the murder of a human was a murder of the entire humanity, adding that we must condemn such barbaric incidents in the strongest terms.

He expressed the hope that the government would reach out to the original masterminds behind this whole tragedy.

Ashrafi urged the people not to take the law in one’s hands and let the law take its own course.
