Solangi vows to protect journalists, media workers’ rights

ISLAMABAD, Nov 10 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Information and Broadcasting Murtaza Solangi on Friday said all-out efforts would be made to protect the rights of journalists and media workers to further strengthen democracy in the country.

Addressing a seminar on “International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists”, he stressed on a collaboration between the government and media organizations for evolving an emergency mechanism to respond to any untoward incident against journalists and media workers efficiently.

The caretaker government had been taking steps to prevent any crime against journalists, he said while citing different occasions when he himself took the lead to protect journalists and media workers’ rights during the last couple of months.

“The journalists are supposed to report news but it is very unfortunate that sometimes they themselves become a news,” he regretted.

Solangi vowed to ensure arrest of those who were involved in the killing of senior journalist Jan Mohammad Mahar.

He said the government would ensure job security of journalists and media workers at all the costs. A clear mechanism in that regard was mentioned in the PEMRA (Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority) Amendments Act.

He urged the journalists to inform people about the facts and real issues so that the parties and candidates contesting elections proposed concrete steps for addressing the same.

The minister said the caretaker government was committed to uphold democracy and rule of law in the country. “We are legally and morally bound to provide a level-playing field to all the political parties during elections.”

He said likewise, the media was also ought to do honest reporting on the elections especially by sensitizing the masses about facts and real issues.

As regards the elections, he said announcement of the polls’ date had removed all the doubts in that regard. “We are saying from the very beginning that the Election Commission will fulfill its responsibility in accordance with the law.”

Babusar Pass closed after heavy snowfall

PESHAWAR, Nov 10 (APP): Babusar Pass has been closed for traffic in the wake of heavy snowfall, officials said on Friday.
In response to heavy snowfall, the district administration has taken the decision to close Babusar Top in Mansehra, imposing restriction on all types of traffic.
This precautionary measures aim to ensure the safety of residents and travelers in the region during adverse weather conditions.
According to a spokesperson for the Mansehra Police, the recreational area of Babusar Top Road has been entirely shut down, prohibiting any movement and traffic.
Individuals planning to travel from Babu Sir Top to destinations like Gilgit and Khunjerab via the Naran Road are advised against it due to the ongoing snowfall.
All the citizens are urged to use the main Karakuram Highway (KKH) Road for travel to places such as Gilgit. The district administration, in collaboration with the Mansehra Police, is actively monitoring the situation to mitigate potential risks and ensure the well-being of the public.

11,511 profiteers fined

FAISALABAD, Nov 10 (APP):Over 11,511 profiteers were fined Rs 8.8 million last month by the administration of all the four districts in the division.
At least 27 cases were registered and 38 shops sealed during the period.
This was told by Divisional Commissioner Silwat Saeed while presiding over a meeting here on Friday.
He directed the officers to focus on prices of essential items and take stern action against price lists violators.

PSX stays bullish with gain of 1,129 points

ISLAMABAD, Nov 10 (APP): The 100-index of Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) continue with bullish trend on Friday, gaining 1,129.94 points, a positive change of 2.08 percent, closing at 55,391.37 points against 54,261.43 points the previous day.

A total of 640,836,781 shares valuing Rs21.146 billion were traded during the day as compared to 482,744,893 shares valuing Rs20.129 billion the previous day.

As many as 380companies transacted their shares in the stock market; 260 of them recorded gains and 103 sustained losses, whereas the share price of 17 companies remained unchanged.

The three top-trading companies were Cnergyico PK with 103,458,035 shares at Rs.4.78 per share, Hum Network with 42,409,000 shares at Rs.7.23 per share and Pak Refinery with 31,064,288 shares at Rs.23.18 per share.

Pak Tobacco XD witnessed a maximum increase of Rs.49.00 per share price, closing at Rs.945.00, whereas the runner-up was Archroma Pak with a Rs.30.86 rise in its per share price to Rs489.31.

Rafhan Maize XD witnessed a maximum decrease of Rs.36.67 per share closing at Rs7,930.00, followed by Gadoon Textile with a Rs.8.90 decline to close at Rs.201.00.

Shorkot, Nov 10 (APP): Funeral prayer of soldier of FC Balochistan Muhammad Anwar, a resident of Shorkot Chak No. 410 JB was held at his native village on Friday and was buried with full military honor.
Muhammad Anwar, a resident of village Chak No. 410 JB in the suburbs of Shorkot, who was performing his duties as a soldier in FC Balochistan, was martyred yesterday while defending his homeland near Balochistan border. A large number of people from different walks of life attended the funeral prayer.

11 brick kilns, 3 boiler units sealed

FAISALABAD, Nov 10 (APP):The environment protection department sealed 14 kilns including three boiler units in various parts of the district.
Deputy Director Umar Ashrat said here Friday that anti-smoke measures were in full swing to control smog in the district. He said that a fine of Rs 1.4 million had also been imposed on owners of brick kilns without zigzag technology.
The legal action was taken against Amjad Bricks kiln 58-JB, Manj Bricks kiln Chak No 6-JB, Dhilon bricks kiln, Abdul Jabbar bricks kiln 247-RB, Usman Bricks kiln Chak No 269-RB, Sahu bricks kiln Chak No 420-JB, Sardar kiln Chak No 219-Jb, Sabir and Sons bricks kiln Chak No 67-GB, Mustafa bricks kiln Chak No 65-JB and two others.
Meanwhile, the teams sealed two sizing units at Tahirpur, Jhang Road, and imposed a fine of Rs 400,000 on owners, while Khalid Mahmood foundry near the Roshanwala bypass was sealed and a fine of Rs 100,000 was imposed.
