Speakers stress immediate action to combat climate change

RAWALPINDI, Dec 06 (APP):The Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (RCCI) in collaboration with “Beyond Carbon” organized a panel discussion on Elevating and Catalyzing Climate Action in Pakistan in light of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28).
The discussion addressed the significance of COP 28 and its potential impact on Pakistan, urging small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to prepare for forthcoming regulations that aim to mitigate climate change, particularly in the context of the Article 6 framework.
RCCI President  Saqib Rafiq in his address highlighted the challenges faced in climate impact, waste management, waste-to-energy and recycling. He also emphasized joint efforts, intensifying awareness campaigns and effective communication with stakeholders.
Panelists engaged in a comprehensive dialogue on the global discourse surrounding climate change, emphasizing the pivotal role of COP as the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
These leaders shared a wealth of expertise, from economic and investment insights to environmental science and policy.
Their diverse perspectives will shed light on the impact of COP28 and Article 6 on the public in general and the business sector in specific.
 The knowledge-sharing initiative convened key stakeholders, including industry experts, small and medium-sized manufacturing facilities, environmental experts, activists, and academia.
The event streamed live on the Facebook pages of RCCI and Beyond Carbon, explored the dynamic landscape of climate change and its implications for businesses, with a special focus on the ongoing COP 28.
 Beyond Carbon Pvt. Ltd, an innovative environmental solutions startup, has solidified a strategic alliance with the Rawalpindi Chamber of Commerce & Industry (RCCI) through a recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
This collaborative effort signifies a commitment to fostering environmental consciousness within the business community and underscores the urgency of proactive measures in the face of evolving global climate regulations.
Acknowledging RCCI’s proactive stance as the first Green Chamber, panellists commended the Chamber for actively raising awareness among its members on this critical subject.
 The event concluded with Beyond Carbon’s COO, Adnan Shafqat, expressing gratitude to RCCI, and attendees for their active participation.
As a token of appreciation, shields were presented to the Chamber President and the distinguished panellists.

Pesco holds E-Katchery for consumers of far flung areas

PESHAWAR, Dec 06 (APP):Following a vision of the Power Division Ministry, Pesco authorities hold a live E-Katchery for the facilitation of consumers residing in far-flung areas.
Chief Operation Officer Pesco, Gul Nabi Syed chaired the E-Katchery and interacted with consumers of remote areas.
He listened to the issues and concerns of consumers and issued on-the-spot directives to address them.
He also informed consumers about initiatives of Pesco to control electricity pilferage. He said that timely actions have reduced load shedding considerably.
He also urged people to install meters, avoid power theft and pay their electricity bills to ensure a smooth supply of electricity to consumers.

AIOU ranked in top 300 world greenest campuses

ISLAMABAD, Dec 06 (APP): Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has been ranked 8th amongst the greenest Pakistani universities while it stood at 293th position worldwide in ranking of ‘UI’s GreenMetric’ for the year 2023.

According to AIOU, as for as the federally chartered universities of Pakistan are concerned, the AIOU stood 3rd amongst the ranking of these universities.

Vice Chancellor, AIOU, Prof. Dr. Nasir Mahmood has expressed his gratitude for the honor and stated that the credit of this achievement goes to the Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) and the gardeners of the University for which they deserve congratulations.

He further said that the University will pay special attention to make the campuses greener so that we can get a better position next year.

As compared to previous year’s ranking, the Allama Iqbal Open University has significantly improved its position worldwide by taking practical steps to green the main campus as well as the regional campuses.

In the ranking of global universities in 2021, the AIOU was ranked 485th among the greenest universities in the world, while in 2022, the University was ranked 331st among global universities.

Efforts to promote technological innovation for crops growth

ISLAMABAD, Dec 6 (APP):Caretaker Minister for National Food Security & Research Dr Kausar Abdullah Malik on Wednesday said that maize is a strategic crop concerning national food security needs and the ministry will make all efforts to promote the latest technological innovation and provide an enabling policy for the crop’s continued growth.
He expressed these views during the meeting with the CropLife Pakistan delegation, which apprised the minister of their contribution to the seed sector, in particular, maize, where over the past two decades yields have grown four-fold and overall production has increased from a little over 1 million metric tons to an impressive 10.5 million metric tons in 2022-23.
The minister said that various steps have been taken to this end, including the enactment and implementation of the Plant Breeders Rights Act, DNA fingerprinting to ensure transparency in the intellectual right protection of seed companies and independent breeders, and streamlining of operating standards for seed companies to improve the overall quality of seed research and supply.
The CropLife representatives further added that its member companies collectively market more than 80% of Pakistan’s hybrid maize seed and have invested significantly towards introducing the latest high-yielding hybrids and farmer education programs.
