President makes condolatory phone calls to families of 20 martyred soldiers

ISLAMABAD, Jan 3 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi on Wednesday telephoned the families of 20 soldiers who were martyred in a terrorist attack in Dera Ismail Khan on December 12 and conveyed his condolences.

During the telephonic interaction, the president paid tribute to the martyred soldiers and expressed sympathies for the grieved families.

He held telephonic interaction with the family members of havaldars Imran Khan, Muhammad Jamil, Muhammad Shahab, Fazal Subhan, Daud Shah and Riasat Khan.

He also spoke with the families of Naik Mukhtar Ali, Lance Naik Muhammad Ishaq, Muhammad Hayat and Sagheer Ahmed, sopys Rehman Shah, Ghulam Murtaza, Muhammad Fayyaz, Ameer Hussain, Adnan, Muhammad Naseer, Waqarullah Khan, Wali Khan, Zulfiqar and Nabeel Akhtar.

President Alvi strongly condemned the terrorist attack and saluted the soldiers who embraced martyrdom for the homeland.

He also paid tribute to the soldiers on behalf of the whole nation for their services to the country and expressed gratitude to their respective families.

The president also prayed to Allah Almighty for elevation of the stature of martyrs in paradise and patience for the bereaved families.

GCC Secretary-General receives ambassador of Peru to the Kingdom

RIAYDH, Jan 3 (APP): Secretary-General of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Jassem Mohamed Albudaiwi received at the headquarters of the GCC General Secretariat in Riyadh today the Ambassador of the Republic of Peru to the Kingdom Carlos Zapata.
During the meeting, they reviewed the relations between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the Republic of Peru and discussed several regional and international issues of common interest.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Peru stressed the need to follow up and strengthen the ties between the GCC and the Republic of Peru in light of the Framework Agreement for Trade, Economic, Investment and Technical Cooperation, which was signed in October 2012, which constitutes a key pillar of the strategic partnership between the two parties.
This meeting comes within the framework of continuous efforts to enhance cooperation between the two sides.

Madinah health cluster wins anti-smoking award

The award, the first of its kind for efforts to combat smoking in the Arab region, aims to support this endeavor. It is given annually to institutions and individuals who present the best activities or achievements that support healthy living and combat smoking. —

PFA fines Rs. 164, 000 to production unit for adulteration

MUZAFFARGARH, Jan 03 (APP):Punjab Food Authority (PFA) fined Rs. 164,000 to the local production unit of spicy mango jam, sweets and bakers during the inspection.
The inspection was conducted by Director Operation South, Shahzad Khan direction of DG Food Authority Mohammed Asam, said a statement issued here Wednesday.
About 17850 kg peels of mangoes 14400 kg stable aamchur (mango powder) 2560 raw aamchor and 800 mangoes’ seeds were seized on the spot.
Moreover, 60 kg expired chemicals 120 liter open oil and 26 kg of prohibited spices were destroyed at the same time.
The inspection was made at Ghazi Dasti DG Khan road, Kaley Wala Alipur and Chaman Bypass Gil Wala. A food production unit operating in the aforesaid region was closed until complete reforming.
Some of the food samples were taken from a few of the manufacturing units that proved to use adulterated spices in their production, served notices on the occasion, concluded the statement.

KTH chief calls for exploiting all resources to attract FDI

LAHORE, Jan 03 (APP):Coordinator to Minister of State and Federal Tax Ombudsman and Kyrgyzstan Trade House (KTH) Chairman Meher Kashif Younis said on Wednesday the government should fully exploit an ideal geographical location of the country, which has abundance of natural and human resources, to attract foreign direct investment (FDI) and boost exports to deal with the economic challenges.

Talking to a delegation of industrialists, led by Chaudhry Faran Shahid here, he said there was pressing need for making policies that facilitate development and implementation of quality technological infrastructure. A small and medium enterprises policy, with orientation of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) that underscores importance of technology in creating value within businesses is essential for fostering economic growth. He said despite Pakistan’s aspirations to become a digital economy, its existing digital infrastructure requires significant improvements to fully realize its potential.

Meher said the investment rate in Pakistan stands at 15 per cent – less than the half of average investment rate in South Asia and private investment in Pakistan is lower than 10 per cent of the GDP. He said Pakistan requires a multifaceted approach that involves addressing governance weaknesses, improving the regulatory framework, and undertaking economic reforms to create a more favourable environment for foreign investors.
Meher said numerous challenges plague Pakistan’s economic situation and one of the major factors contributing to these challenges is extensive public sector intervention characterised by policies, regulations, and bureaucratic obstacles, has impeded the growth and efficiency of industries.

He said that for better future, policymakers must address these challenges and implement strategies that facilitate economic growth, alleviate the burden of state-owned enterprises, and establish an environment conducive to innovation and productivity. “By doing so, Pakistan can pave the way for a more robust and sustainable economic landscape. Only through concerted, targeted efforts Pakistan can overcome these obstacles and pave the way for sustainable economic growth and development,” he concluded.

RDA gives concession to educational institutions till end of current academic year

RAWALPINDI, Jan 03 (APP):Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) on the directives of Director General (DG) RDA, Muhammad Saif Anwar Jappa has given concession to the educational institutions till end of the current academic year.
According to a RDA spokesman, the Land Use and Building Control Wing of RDA on the requests of the owners of the schools had suspended the legal action against illegal educational institutions till the end of the current academic year.
He informed that the authority on the directives of the DG had decided to give concession to the owners of the schools so that the educational activities of the children are not interrupted due to the legal action of RDA and the children could complete their academic year without any hindrance.
The spokesman said that in the light of this decision, all school owners who had established schools in residential buildings without approval were directed by the DG RDA to immediately get regularized the schools as per law or stop the illegal use of the buildings in residential areas.
The school owners had also been instructed to submit an affidavit within 15 days to the RDA that they are ready to get regularized their illegal schools or stop the illegal use of the buildings, he said adding, the owners of the buildings will have to pay Rs 1000 fine per day until the schools are regularized or the buildings being used for the commercial purposes are vacated.
If the affidavit is not submitted within 15 days, legal action would be taken against the rules violators and the schools would be closed, he added.

Two suspects arrested in alleged encounters

HYDERABAD, Jan 03 (APP):The Hyderabad police arrested two suspected in injured condition during alleged police encounters.

According to the spokesperson of the district police, the B Section police signaled to stop the motorcycle-riding suspects near Bachao Band area but the suspects opened fire. Police arrested a suspect Zahid Ali after an encounter and his other companion managed to escape.

The injured suspect was shifted to the hospital.

Hali road police while patrolling had an encounter with the armed suspect near American Quarters, in which the accused Abdul Rahman was arrested with a weapon.

The police took the injured suspect under custody and shifted him to the hospital. The Hali Road police have filed cases against the arrested.

Election Tribunal receives over 150 appeals against nomination papers

PESHAWAR, Jan 03 (APP):The Election Tribunal has so far received over 150 appeals against rejection or acceptance of nomination papers for National and Provincial Assemblies.

According to the spokesman of the provincial election commission, the appeal of former provincial minister Atif Khan, former Deputy Speaker Mehmood Jan, former provincial minister Shahram Tarakai, former MPA Iftikhar Mashwani and Abdul Salam Afridi had been approved for the hearing.

The Election Tribunal Judge Justice Shakeel Ahmed would conduct a hearing on appeals from January 4 to 10.

ISLAMABAD, Jan 3 (APP):Health experts on Wednesday warned that the continued thick smog in various cities of the country has become a real threat to citizens’ health, as the air pollution rate increasing to an alarming level and leading to multiple chest infection diseases like Pneumonia.

Talking to a Private news channel, a specialist of ENT Dr Afnan Hayat children and elders are physiologically more vulnerable to air pollution than adults because their brains, lungs and other organs are still developing, adding, that hospitals were on high alert with beds and ventilators set aside for extra emergency cases.

He advised that pneumonia is undoubtedly a risky respiratory health infection which can become a big problem when air pollution levels flare up.

Citizens should keep themselves indoors during fog times, the risk of pneumonia and other severe respiratory problems doubled and also increases the risk of mortality, he added.

“In case of fog and smog, people are advised to take some precautionary measures and vaccinate their children”, he added.

The expert also suggested plenty of rest, warm beverages, steam baths, or the use of humidifiers in houses for air moisture and timely consultations with doctors.

Replying to a question, he mentioned that Pneumonia begins with symptoms of fever, cough and difficulty breathing. Not only adults can get pneumonia, but children and the elderly can also experience it.

Interim Minister for Primary and Secondary Healthcare and Population Welfare Dr Jamal Nasir added that smog was an additional factor in the increased respiratory diseases.

He confirmed that the number of pneumonia cases was higher than the previous year and asked citizens for timely vaccination
Talking about the shortage of vaccines, he made it clear that in Punjab demand for vaccines was being increased due to this issue patients facing problems but the provincial government was taking all-out steps to fulfill the demand in hospitals.

Flour godowns sealed over hoarding in Tank

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Jan 03 (APP):The district administration of Tank has launched a crackdown against profiteers, sealing several stores of flour dealers for hoarding the commodity here on Wednesday.
According to the district administration, the action was taken by Assistant Commissioner Tank Amin Ullah Khan in line with the instructions of the provincial government to ensure the availability of edible items at officially prescribed rates to citizens by taking action against hoarders and profiteers.
The assistant commissioner leading a team visited Tank bazaar to check the prices of food items at shops and found some of flour dealers dumping the commodity at their stores. He sealed those godowns and imposed fines on the violators.
Speaking on the occasion, he said hoarding was an illegal act and strict legal action would be taken against violators.
