Israel carried out nearly 600 attacks on Gaza hospitals since Oct 7, says WHO

UNITED NATIONS, Jan 05 (APP): Israeli military forces have have attacked hospitals in Gaza and other vital medical infrastructure nearly 600 times since the war erupted on October 7 last year, the UN health agency said on Friday.

Since then, some 613 people have died within the medical facilities and more than 770 have been injured, according to the latest data on healthcare attacks from the Geneva-based World Health Organization (WHO).

Condemning the continuing fighting and bombardment, WHO Spokesperson Christian Lindmeier said that the “ongoing reduction of humanitarian space plus the continuing attacks on healthcare are pushing the people of Gaza to breaking point”.

Children in the Gaza Strip face a deadly triple threat to their lives, as cases of diseases rise, nutrition plummets and the escalation in hostilities approaches its fourteenth week.

Thousands of children have already died from the violence, while living conditions for children continue to rapidly deteriorate, with increasing cases of diarrhea and rising food poverty among children, raising the risk of mounting child deaths.

WHO’s online platform covering attacks on healthcare indicated that more than 550 medical facilities and vehicles had been impacted in the almost 100 days since constant Israeli airstrikes began in Gaza.

The attacks have affected 94 healthcare sites including 26 hospitals damaged out of a total of 36 in the enclave.

The head of the UN Children’s Fund UNICEF, Catherine Russel, said in a statement on Friday that children in Gaza “are caught in a nightmare that worsens with every passing day”.

Ms Russell noted young lives were “increasingly at risk from preventable diseases and lack of food and water. All children and civilians must be protected from violence and have access to basic services and supplies.”

Cases of diarrhoea in children under five rose from 48,000 to 71,000 in just one week starting December 17, equivalent to 3,200 new cases of diarrhoea per day.

She said the significant increase indicated child health in Gaza was “fast deteriorating”. Before the escalation in hostilities, an average of 2,000 cases of diarrhoea in children under five were recorded per month.

In a statement, Eri Kaneko, Spokesperson for United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) made clear on Thursday that the speed and volume of relief was being continually hampered by conditions on the ground.

“The UN and our humanitarian partners are committed to and continue to do all they can to meet the growing needs in Gaza. However, the operating environment and response capacity continues to be hindered by security risks, mobility constraints, delays and denials,” she said.

“Multiple inspections, long queues of trucks and difficulties at crossing points continue to hamper operations. Inside Gaza, aid operations face constant bombardments, with aid workers themselves killed and some convoys having been shot at.”

She made clear other challenges included poor communications, damaged roads and delays at checkpoints.

“An effective aid operation in Gaza requires security, staff who can work in safety, logistical capacity and the resumption of commercial activity.”

Meanwhile, the UN agency providing help to Palestinians, UNRWA, said that the total number of staff killed since the beginning of hostilities stands at 142.

The UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees also reported that since October 7 last year, up to 1.9 million people have been displaced across the Gaza Strip, some multiple times.

This number represents over 85 per cent of the population of the Gaza Strip, UNRWA said, adding that families have been forced to move “repeatedly in search of safety”.

Nearly 1.4 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) now shelter in 155 UNRWA facilities across all five governorates of the Gaza Strip.

This figure includes 160,000 in the north and Gaza City according to the data last revised shortly after the escalation began.

Another 500,000 people “are in close vicinity of these installations and receiving assistance” from UNRWA, the UN agency said in an update.

The UN’s migration agency IOM launched an urgent appeal on Friday for $69 million to support its response to rising and critical humanitarian needs in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

The appeal also covers neighbouring countries affected by the ongoing hostilities in Gaza.

In a statement, IOM said that hundreds of thousands of civilians need aid desperately. But getting help to them continues to be hampered by “long clearance procedures for humanitarian aid trucks at the border (and) the intense ground operation and fighting”.

“Frequent disruption” to communication networks has also prevented humanitarian aid coordination, the UN agency said “along with insecurity, blocked roads and scarcity of fuel”.

Outside Gaza, IOM noted that deteriorating security situation along border areas between Israel and Lebanon has forced some 76,000 people from their homes in southern Lebanon.

Caretaker govt has no power to delay elections: Solangi

ISLAMABAD, Jan 05 (APP): Caretaker Minister for Information, Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Murtaza Solangi on Friday said that the caretaker government had no power to delay the general elections scheduled for February 8.

Speaking in the talk show of a private news channel, the minister said under Article 218(3) of the Constitution, the power to fix or change the date of elections solely rested with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).

No body including the administration had any right to change the date of elections, he added.

The minister reiterated the caretaker government’s stance of holding the general elections on February 8. Whatever he stated in the Senate while speaking on the resolution for delaying the election was the government’s stance, he added.

“Whatever mentioned in the resolution is factually correct since there are security issues in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

If this resolution is called a conspiracy then the onus to thwart it is on those who are making complaints,” the minister said, adding it was also the responsibility of the parties in the House to point out the quorum.

To a query, he ruled out any possibility of writing an article by a jailed person for any media outlet as no such content had been leaked from the prison.

The government would, however, take up the issue of “ghost article”, published in the name of a jailed politician, with the foreign media outlet, The Economist, he added.

He asked whether The Economist had ever published such ghost articles by jailed politicians from any other part of the world.

Solangi said there was substantial evidence against those responsible for the events of May 9, 2023 when the civil and military installations came under attack following the arrest of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder.

“The people of Pakistan fully know that who actually conspired (against the country) and who was the target of that conspiracy,” he added.

He said no court had declared the caretaker government as unconstitutional and a person who was in the jail had not authority to pass a judgment on the caretaker set-up.

Solangi said the anti-money laundering regime of Pakistan had witnessed substantial improvement in the recent past.
He hoped that the Financial Action Task Force would apply the same rule on all other countries which was applied on Pakistan.

“Pakistan is an independent country, practicing democracy in letter and spirit and criticism is a part of democracy,” he remarked in response to another question.

He said if anybody had any complaint regarding the elections, they could reach out the relevant forum for redressal of their grievances.

To another query, he said many PTI candidates, whose nominations papers were rejected in the first stage, got relief from the tribunals. The PTI submitted some 2,620 nomination papers for the National Assembly, out of which 1,996 were accepted, he added.

For the provincial assemblies, he said the PTI submitted 1,777 nomination papers, and 1,398 were accepted. Some 78.67 per cent of the nomination papers were accepted at the first stage, he added.

BEIJING, Jan 5 (APP): China on Friday urged parties to the Palestinian-Israel conflict to implement the resolutions adopted by the United Nations Security Council and General Assembly, carry out full ceasefire at once and stop the collective punishment against the people of Gaza.

“The ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict has killed more than 22,000 people in Gaza already, most of whom were civilians. The daily civilian death toll remains above one hundred. This must not continue,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin said during his regular briefing.

Responding to a question about filing of a lawsuit by the Republic of South Africa in the International Court of Justice requesting an interim injunction on the ground that Israel violated the 1948 United Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of Genocide with the actions it committed in Gaza since October 7, the spokesperson said, “We noted the application.”

“The Chinese side opposes any action that violates the international law,” he said.

“We urge parties to the conflict to implement the resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council and the UN General Assembly, carry out full ceasefire at once and stop the collective punishment against the people of Gaza.”
