LAHORE, Jun 12 (APP):Federal Minister for Power Division Engineer Khurram Dastgir Khan said on Monday that the coalition government managed to inject 5000 megawatts (MW) of additional electricity into the system within one year.

Addressing a press conference here at Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) headquarters, he explained that 1980MW had been added to the national grid from Thar coal power plant, three power plants of accumulative generation of 1100MW had been inaugurated in Karachi, and other 720MW projects, which were neglected by previous government, had now started generation, while testing of 1200MW Punjab thermal would start soon.

“In one year of Shehbaz Sharif government, we have worked a lot in the energy sector. We have brought back electricity in the country, which faced scarcity from 2018 to 2022 due to negligence of the former government,” he added.

Khurram Dastgir said that previous government, in its four years period, created economic turmoil and made no progress on energy projects under the CPEC (China-Pakistan Economic Corridor).

However, the current coalition government, he added, started various projects under CPEC especially in power sector at full speed and in the new fiscal year, Rs 900 billion relief in the electricity bills would continue to be given to targeted/ deserving consumers, while load-shedding duration would also be less than in the past years.

The federal minister said the government would also give a tariff differential subsidy of Rs 150 billion to keep the price of electricity equal in the whole country, besides allocating Rs 58 billion relief package for agriculture tube-wells in Balochistan, and there would be a relief of Rs 315 billion for those living in Karachi.

“I want to thank prime minister and finance minister for giving relief to the power consumers in the federal budget 2023-34,” he said, asserting that the relief would have two parts: Rs 579 billion for power consumers across country, and the payment would be made to the IPPs, while merged FATA districts in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa would get Rs 25 billion relief during the next fiscal year.

To a question, the minister said that Pakistan’s gas deposits were depleting every year, but it could last for 15 to 20 years if used in appropriate manner. The best use of the gas was taking place through world’s most efficient gas plants and they were trying to provide inexpensive electricity through gas resource.

To another question, he said that he discussed in detail with LESCO authorities the matters pertaining to bills recovery, maintenance and improvement in the LESCO region’s system. There was no shortage of equipment including power meters in the LESCO and other distribution companies (Discos), while shortages of field staff such as meter readers and linemen was also being addressed to ensure early resolution of power complaints and correct meter reading.

He said that Discos were facing electricity theft issues in some far-flung areas where there was governance deficit; however, the government was formulating a new law which would give enforcement powers to Discos to stop power theft.

Responding to another query, he said that May 9 incident was a seditious conspiracy and it was not a public protest but a coup plot, and the mastermind would not be able to escape.

In this regard, he added, the law would apply to Qasim’s father as well.
He said that Nawaz Sharif would soon come to Pakistan and lead the election campaign of the party.

UNSC report underscores TTP’s persistent threat to Pakistan’s security

Chronic bias against women still remains: UN report

UNITED NATIONS, Jun 11 (APP): A United Nations Security Council report has come as a reminder about the persistent threat Pakistan’s security faces from the Afghanistan-based Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), saying the militant group also poses a threat to the region.

“The link between the Taliban and both Al-Qaeda and Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) remains strong and symbiotic,” the annual report of the 1988 Taliban sanctions committee monitoring team noted.

The report comes amid escalating TTP attacks inside Pakistani territory to which Pakistan
has repeatedly drawn the attention of the international community.

“A range of terrorist groups have greater freedom of manoeuvre under the Taliban de facto authorities,” the report said, adding, “They are making good use of this, and the threat of terrorism is rising in both Afghanistan and the region”.

“While they have sought to reduce the profile of these groups and have conducted operations against Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – Khorasan Province (ISIL-K), in general, the Taliban have not delivered on the counter-terrorism provisions under the Agreement for Bringing Peace to Afghanistan between the United States of America and the Taliban.”

The report said there were indications that al-Qaeda is rebuilding operational capability, that TTP is launching attacks into Pakistan with support from the Taliban, that groups of foreign terrorist fighters are projecting threat across Afghanistan’s borders and that the operations of ISIL-K are becoming more sophisticated and lethal “if not more numerous”.

“It is too early to judge the impact of the decree by the Taliban in April 2022
banning poppy cultivation,” the report added.

“At this point,” it said, “prices have increased, as has production of
the more profitable methamphetamine. Key Taliban individuals remain closely
involved in production and trafficking.”

However, the Afghan Taliban dismissed the report and called it “full of prejudice”, according to media reports.

Addressing the youth Convention of PML (N) in Tehsil Shujaabad here, she said that her heart was broken with great shock on the desecration of martyrs.

She said that the nation would follow the elements involved in the desecration of martyrs and burning of army installations till the end.

She said that the mastermind of May 9 tragedy was hiding in Zaman Park and whenever the mastermind was questioned, he put the responsibility on the workers.

She said that the leaders never let their workers down adding that the leader is the one who holds his daughter’s hand and goes to jail as Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif did.

Mastermind of May 9 claimed that this country was unsafe for his children, she said.
“Imran made the country unsafe by setting it on fire,” she said.

“Do the people who desecrate martyrs deserve mercy or forgiveness”, she questioned?

She said that the country’s safeguards will break the hands of the people who are involved in country’s burners.
The one who created drama to make people’s children arrested for nefarious political interest. has his own children safe in London, she added.

Maryam recalled a group that claims to make PML (N) cry with arrogance, was now crying.
“Who was afraid of prison? the same man has issued order for the burning of military installations. His May 9 trick backfired as an armed rebellion against the army is now begging for talks,” she informed.

The PML (N) leader said that he (Imran) used to say that he will break Muslim League-N but his own party has been broken and the whole party could easily be covered in a mini vehicle.

She said that Imran used to say that he formed his party in 26 years, was now fallen apart in 26 seconds. She said that the party was formed in a plane and also broke up in the same plane.

Maryam Nawaz said that PM (N) could not be broken because Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif was the son of this soil and the servant of the nation as well.

She said that Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif came to Shujaabad seven times even he was in Shujabad at the time of Pervez Musharraf’s illegal takeover.

The government was taken away from Nawaz Sharif time and again but he never pushed the people to set the country on fire.

She said that if PML-N will gain power, the destiny of the entire country could be changed.
She said that good days were approaching for the people of Shujaabad.
She lauded the entire leadership of PML-N Multan and said that they all were very close to her heart.

ISLAMABAD, Jun 11 (APP): In a surprising and generous move, the government has announced a significant increment in the salaries of the employees, despite facing financial constraints.

The decision has been hailed by all sections of society, as it demonstrates the government’s commitment to supporting the middle class and alleviating their financial burdens, said parliamentarians.

According to the official announcement, the government has increased salaries by 35 per cent for employees in Grade-1 to 16, and by 30 per cent for those in grade-17 and above. Additionally, the pension has been raised by 17.5 per cent, benefiting retired government personnel. Furthermore, employees with wages would receive Rs 32,000.

The decision to increase salaries and pensions comes at a time when many countries including Pakistan are grappling with economic challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath.
