ISLAMABAD, July 28 (APP): The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold an extraordinary virtual session for the Council of Foreign Ministers of Member States (CFM) on July 31 to discuss the repeated incidents of desecration and burning of copies of the Holy Quran in Sweden and Denmark.

This session has been convened at the request of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Chair of the 14th Islamic Summit, and the Republic of Iraq.

This urgent meeting of ministers has been called in response to the final statement issued by the OIC Executive Committee after an extraordinary meeting held at the OIC General Secretariat in Jeddah on July 02, this year.

The statement addressed the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran in Sweden and called for high-level emergency meetings as needed.

The meeting is being held considering the OIC Secretary-General Hissein Brahim Taha’s consultations with the member states regarding the implementation of the final statement issued by the Executive Committee.

Further measures are also being considered in response to the repeated provocative actions that represent deliberate religious hatred and intolerance.

People of Balochistan have first right on province’s resources: PM

ISLAMABAD, July 28 (APP): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said that the people of Balochistan had the first right on the resources of the province as the betterment of their lives would make them own the development.

“The people of Balochistan have the first right on the resources of the province. When their lives and those of their children change for the better, they will own development and become a partaker in it,” the prime minister wrote on social media.

The prime minister spent an “eventful” day in Gwadar on Thursday along with federal ministers, army and naval chiefs, governor and chief minister of Balochistan and the government officials, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for a series of development, infrastructural and educational projects that would change the destiny of the region.

“Despite sporadic attempts here and there, Balochistan has been a victim of our collective neglect. The province has not progressed at par with other federating units, which is a shame,” he remarked.

He recalled that he had toured all the affected regions of Balochistan during the devastating floods last year and saw the conditions for himself.

Prime Minister Shehbaz said that his idea of development was rooted in the uplift of the standards of living of the people as it was their socio-economic well-being and welfare that formed the core of real development.

He reiterated that Pakistan’s progress was linked to that of Balochistan.

“My meeting with the youth of the province on the occasion of distribution of laptops was a high point of my visit. Their beaming faces reassured me that the future of Balochistan and Pakistan is in safe and responsible hands. The old guard only needs to do their bit,” the prime minister remarked.

UNGA adopts Pakistan-backed Moroccan resolution condemning attacks against religious symbols, holy books

ISLAMABAD, Jul 28 (APP): The UN General Assembly Tuesday adopted, by consensus, a Moroccan resolution, co-sponsored by Pakistan, calling for countering hate speech, and strongly deploring attacks against places of worship, religious symbols, and holy books.

The resolution, entitled: ‘Promoting interreligious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech’, won the approval of the 193-member Assembly amid growing acts of desecration of the holy Quran.

Diplomats said that Pakistan led the efforts, along with Malaysia and Egypt, to work toward the resolution of the language aimed at upholding the sanctity of religious sites, symbols, and holy books.

The paragraph reads: “Strongly deploring all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief, as well as any such acts directed against their religious symbols, holy books, homes, businesses, properties, schools, cultural centers or places of worship, as well as all attacks on and in religious places, sites and shrines in violation of international law,”

Spain submitted an amendment asking for the last words of that paragraph “in violation of international law” to be deleted.

Speaking on behalf of the European Union, the Spanish delegate emphasized that although such actions are deeply offensive and disrespectful, they do not constitute a violation of international law, and thus proposed the elimination of the reference to “in violation of international law”.

But the amendment to change the phrasing was defeated. It secured only 44 votes in favour, with 62 voting against. There were 24 abstentions.

Under the terms of the resolution, the General Assembly urged member states to engage with all relevant stakeholders to promote interreligious and intercultural dialogue and respect and acceptance of differences, among other things, to reject the spread of hate speech that constitutes incitement to discrimination, hostility, and violence.

It further called on Member States and social media companies to counter hate speech and address its increasing spread, enable research into measures to reduce it, and promote users’ access to effective reporting channels.

The Assembly also voiced deep concern over the rise in instances of discrimination, intolerance, and violence,
regardless of the actors, including cases motivated by Islamophobia, on a proposal put forward by Pakistan,
and backed by Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, according to the diplomats.

Pakistan’s delegate, Bilal Chaudhry, expressing his “profound satisfaction” over the adoption of the resolution, said the text resonated with the resolution on religious hatred, presented by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, recently adopted at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

That landmark resolution condemned “all advocacy and manifestations of religious hatred, including recent public and premeditated acts that have desecrated the Quran” and called for countries to adopt laws enabling them to bring to justice those responsible for such acts, he pointed out.

“Islamophobia is on the rise, with the repeated incidents of desecration of the Holy Quran. These acts are not just a provocation to the feelings of more than two billion Muslims in the world, but a step to sabotage interfaith harmony and peace,” the Pakistani delegate added.

“Such incidents are also a manifestation of racial hatred and xenophobia, and absence of preventive legal deterrence, inaction, and shying away from speaking out encourages further incitement to hatred and violence,” Chaudhry said.

“The text does not seek to curtail the right to free speech, but tries to underline the special duties and responsibilities of the international community to safeguard interfaith peace and harmony,” he concluded.

5th August is one of most tragic and catastrophic days in Kashmir’s history: GA Gulzar

APHC

ISLAMABAD, Jul 28 (APP): The Vice Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar, has said that the 5th of August was one of the most tragic, painful and catastrophic days in the modern history of Kashmir.

According to Kashmir media service (KMS) report on Friday, Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar, in a statement issued in Srinagar on the completion of four years of Indian siege in occupied Jammu and Kashmir, said that it was the day when Hindutva forces in flagrant violation of the international law and United Nations resolutions scrapped special status of IIOJK and deprived its people of all political, social, cultural, economic, religious and other basic rights.

He further said that 5th August was the day when the Hindutva regime with its all military might, resources and institutions attacked Kashmir and usurped the basic rights of the Kashmiri people. The Indian government, parliament, its one million troops, dozens of probe institutions, intelligence agencies and even its anti-Muslim and pro-Hindu judiciary have joined hands to conquer Kashmiris and make it part of Hindu Raster, he lamented.

While terming the 5th August as day of mourning for Kashmiris he said that the tragedy of scrapping of special status was the worst dacoity,, biggest robbery and attack on the identity, culture, and basic rights of Kashmiris and this backstabbing act will have catastrophic effects on the future of Kashmir. He appealed to the people to observe strikes in all regions of IIOJK.

He also urged Kashmiris living on both sides of the line of control and the world over to organize protests, rallies and arrange other programmes to invite attention of the world community towards unabated Hindutva terrorism in Kashmir.

Terming Kashmir a gigantic prison and world’s larger torture cell, he said every inch of Kashmir is dotted with trigger-happy troops and Kashmir has been reeling under constant siege for past four years. He said since 5th August 2019 occupation forces have butchered over 800 Kashmiris and more than 25,000 have been arrested and are languishing in Indian jails under different concocted cases.

Besides this, Indian dreaded agencies like National Investigation Agency (NIA) and State Investigation Agency (SIA) have wreaked havoc and confiscated the properties of hundreds of pro-freedom leaders and activists. In addition to that properties of thousands of Kashmiris were demolished under different excuses by Indian authorities, he lamented.

He said the motive behind the sealing and demolition of properties is to intimidate the Kashmiris and force them into submission. This is the same colonial policy which Israel is using in Palestine to deprive them of their land and force them to migrate, he added.

The APHC leader said the immoral and unconstitutional act of August 5 by the Modi regime has impacted every walk of life besides causing loss of billions of dollars to Kashmir economy. The unending lockdown, he said, has shattered and devastated the already fragile economy of Kashmir and deprived thousands of Kashmiris from their living and jobs.

Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar said the RSS regime led by butcher Modi is hell-bent to wipe out Muslims, turn Kashmir into a graveyard and settle non-state Hindus in the disputed territory. He said issuing domicile to thousands of Indian Hindu fanatics and allotting them Kashmiri land and appointing them to high positions is a deep-rooted conspiracy to settle outsiders in Kashmir and enslave and colonize local Kashmiris. This Zionist policy is aimed at snatching everything from Kashmiris and forcing them to flee, he added.

He said despite using every brutal method to crush the popular voice of Kashmiris through military might India has failed to conquer Kashmiris and their passion for freedom is getting momentum with each passing day.

He said Kashmiris have dashed all the hopes of Hindutva elements to ground and forced them to lick the dust. Indian callous attitude, he said, has further solidified the belief of Kashmiris that India is their worst enemy and their lives, honour, future, religious identity, culture and everything is at stake under Indian subjugation. Unarmed but resilient and valiant Kashmiris have defeated the world’s sixth military power through their determination, steadfastness and indomitable spirit, he maintained.

Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar said Kashmiris have shattered the dream of RSS and again proved that they were invincible, they could be killed but not defeated. Their morale is as high as the Himalayas, he said, adding India has held them hostage on the basis of over one million troops but India must remember that if it deploys all its troops in Kashmir, shameful and humiliating defeat is its destiny.

He said the unprecedented resolve shown by the Kashmiris is the writing of the wall for Kashmiris that no power on earth can crush the Kashmiris’ legitimate freedom movement. He said it is in the interest of India to shun its obduracy and accept Kashmiris right to self-determination.

Ghulam Ahmed Gulzar thanked Pakistan for its consistent support to Kashmiris’ freedom movement and expressed hope that Pakistan would expedite its efforts to promote Kashmir cause at international level. He also urged the international community to force India to implement United Nations resolutions on Kashmir and stop human rights violations by Indian troops in the disputed territory.

It is to be mentioned that on August 5, 2019 the Modi-led Hindutva government abrogated Kashmir’s special status and divided it into two union territories besides imposing military siege in the territory.

President calls for early diagnosis of hepatitis cases to avert liver cancer epidemic

ISLAMABAD, Jul 27 (APP): President Dr Arif Alvi on Friday said that as Pakistan has the world’s largest population of hepatitis patients, it was a must to prioritize the screening and early diagnosis of the disease and any delayed action could lead to a devastating liver cancer epidemic.

“Presently, Pakistan has the world’s largest population of patients living with Hepatitis C, a staggering 10 million cases… Without timely action, the number of HCV-infected cases in Pakistan may rise exponentially, leading to a devastating liver cancer epidemic,” the president said in his message to the nation on World Hepatitis Day annually observed on July 28.

He said World Hepatitis Day was commemorated to raise awareness about the critical issue of hepatitis and related diseases in Pakistan.

He said Hepatitis B and C viruses posed significant public health threats, causing immense morbidity and mortality worldwide.

“In the Eastern Mediterranean Region, a staggering 80% of the hepatitis C disease burden lies in Egypt and Pakistan. While Egypt has made commendable progress in combating hepatitis C, regrettably, our country remains a major contributor to this burden in our region,” he remarked.

The president said Hepatitis C was a dangerous, silent disease, often carrying no signs or symptoms until it has done significant damage to the liver.

We must realize that individuals infected with this virus continue to carry it for years, putting them at high risk of advanced-stage liver disease and cancer, he added.

He said in order to ensure the well-being of our nation, we need to prioritize the screening and early diagnosis of hepatitis C cases. It is our duty to actively screen our entire population and promptly treat those found positive, the president added.

“The consequences are alarming: numerous deaths, liver cirrhosis cases, and a significant burden on our economy. We cannot let this happen; we must take action today to secure a healthier and prosperous future for our nation,” he advised.

He said on World Hepatitis Day, the nation should reaffirm its commitment to making hepatitis prevention, control, and elimination a national priority. We are scaling up screening, testing, and treatment efforts while emphasizing preventive interventions nationwide.

President Alvi called for addressing the risk factors of the disease urgently, such as ensuring safe blood transfusions, using auto-disable syringes, strict infection control practices in healthcare settings, and implementing hepatitis B birth dose and adult vaccination.

He called upon all healthcare workers, stakeholders, and citizens to join hands in this crucial endeavour.

“Let us spread awareness about hepatitis prevention, screening, and treatment throughout our communities. Together, we can create a healthier and brighter future for Pakistan, free from the burden of hepatitis and its related diseases by protecting the health of our people,” he remarked.

UN chief demands Niger president’s immediate, unconditional release

UNITED NATIONS, Jul 27 (APP): UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres Thursday demanded the release of Niger’s President Mohamed Bazoum “immediately and unconditionally”, as military officers continue to hold the democratically-elected leader captive after declaring a coup.

A group of officers from all branches of the military made the television announcement late on Wednesday after members of the president’s own guard detained him inside his offices in the capital Niamey.

According to news reports, the attempted coup does not have the backing of the entire military, but the head of the army has announced that he supports the move.

Addressing reporters at UN Headquarters in New York on Thursday, the UN chief once again strongly condemned the attempted military takeover and the “assault against the democratically-elected government”.

President Bazoum issued a defiant tweet of his own on Thursday, saying that “the hard-won achievements will be safeguarded. All Nigeriens who love democracy and freedom will see to it.”

Guterres said he had spoken to the president on Wednesday to express the UN’s full solidarity.

Addressing the coup plotters in Niger directly to camera, the UN chief demanded they stop obstructing democratic governance, and respect the rule of law.

After coups in neighbouring Mali and Burkina Faso in recent years, provoked by the rise of Islamist groups across the entire Sahel region, the Secretary-General noted that the events in Niamey were part of “a disturbing trend”

“Successive unconstitutional changes of government are having terrible effects on the development and lives of civilian populations. This is particularly glaring in countries already affected by conflict, violent extremism and terrorism, as well as the devastating effects of climate change.”

The UN’s human rights chief Volker Turk said in a tweet that he was “shocked and distressed” by the coup attempt, adding that every step must be taken to restore constitutional order.

Creating awareness on climate change: Senator Rehman launches UNDP’s Coffee Table Book

Creating awareness on climate change: Senator Rehman launches UNDP’s Coffee Table Book

ISLAMABAD, Jul 27 (APP): Senator Sherry Rehman, Federal Minister, Ministry of Climate Change & Environmental, with Samuel Rizk UNDP’s Resident Representative to Pakistan, launched UNDP’s Coffee Table Book: Fading Vistas – Beauty of Northern Pakistan.

The event also exhibited photographs of the breathtaking scenery of the mountains, lakes, and glaciers of the 24 GLOF-II Project valleys in Gilgit Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The event is part of the GLOF-II Project – a joint initiative by the Ministry of Climate Change and UNDP, with the support of the Green Climate Fund.

The book, “Fading Vistas” holds a collection of exquisitely curated photographs of Northern Pakistan’s valleys, glaciers, and mountains to reinforce the need to safeguard them from the devastating impacts of climate change. The book also illustrates some of the devastating effects of glacial lake outburst floods and GLOF-II interventions to support affected communities.

The Federal Minister, Senator Sherry Rehman, on working relentlessly on climate adaptation to reduce Pakistan’s climate vulnerability, stated, “Our deep connection to the wondrous ecological systems of the Earth can in no way be negated or undermined, as without the grandeur and benevolence of our natural habitats – the splendid valleys, vast forests, and monumental mountains; we would truly cease to exist.”

The Honorable Minister reinforced how Pakistan bears the brunt of global warming despite its low emissions rate, exacerbating poverty, gender inequality, and loss of livelihoods.

On the occasion, UNDP’s Resident Representative to Pakistan, Samuel Rizk, highlighted, “Climate Change is a huge development challenge. Apart from the global impacts, it is hitting the poorest and the most vulnerable first and hardest, as they rely on natural resources to support their livelihoods. UNDP is committed to building climate-resilient and environmentally sustainable policies into development plans and programmes in Pakistan.”

Pakistan’s rich topography ranges from the highest glacier-covered mountains to the deepest seas, hosting rich biodiversity and ecosystems. However, climate change makes these natural habitats susceptible to the grave danger of perishing. While our Earth is warning us of rising sea levels owing to large glacial melts, torrential rains, and unprecedented floods and droughts, sustainable climate action needs to be taken to safeguard these endangered sights and ecosystems.

UNDP’s GLOF-II project works in 16 valleys of Gilgit Baltistan and 8 valleys in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It empowers communities to identify and manage risks associated with GLOFs and related impacts of Climate Change, strengthen public services to lower the risk of disasters related to GLOFs, and improve community preparedness and disaster response. The project also supports the development of sustainable options for livelihoods in project areas, with a particular focus on the participation of women in ensuring food security and livelihoods.
