Pakistan, SFD sign $107 mln hydropower agreements
ISLAMABAD, Mar 22 (APP): Secretary, Economic Affairs Division, Dr. Kazim Niaz and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) here Friday signed loan agreements US$ 66.00 million for Shounter Hydropower Project (48 MW) and US$ 41.00 million Jagran IV Hydropower Project (22 MW).
Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Khan Cheema witnessed the signing ceremony, according to press statement issued by Economic Affairs Division.
These endeavours aim at harnessing the indigenously available hydropower potential and generating 70 MW hydropower, which will be transmitted to the national grid.
Moreover, it will help in eradicating the menace of deforestation by providing electricity as an alternative to the energy needs of the local communities, who hitherto are entirely dependent on forest wood; and create economic opportunities for socioeconomic uplift of the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
It is pertinent to mention that a delegation from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), led by Sultan Bin Abdul Rehman Al Marshad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), SFD is currently visiting Pakistan.
The delegation called on Minister for Economic Affairs, Ahad Khan Cheema, the statement said adding The CEO, SFD, thanked him and government of Pakistan for the warm welcome and hospitality as well as the conferment of award.

Planning minister calls for ‘proactive approach’ in disaster management
ISLAMABAD, Mar 22 (APP): Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Professor Ahsan Iqbal on Friday urged the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to adopt a ‘proactive approach’ to cope with any natural calamity-like situation in the future, saying “Pakistan is one of the most vulnerable countries affected by climate change.”
The minister made these remarks during his visit to the National Emergencies Operation Center (NEOC), where he received a detailed briefing by the Chairman of NDMA Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, according to a Planning Ministry news release.
Speaking at the occasion, Ahsan Iqbal highlighted that in 2022, Pakistan faced unprecedented devastation due to torrential rains and flooding in most parts of the country, affecting 33 million people and causing economic losses worth $30 billion.
In response, the government devised a Resilient, Recovery, Rehabilitation, and Reconstruction (4RF) framework, aimed at effective coordination and participation among federal and provincial governments, development partners, donors, international and national NGOs, and academic and private sectors, the minister said explaining the key features of the 4RF framework developed in the aftermath of the 2022 flood.
“We should adopt a proactive approach when it comes to disaster rehabilitation, disaster management, and preparedness while utilizing data,” he emphasized.
Although Pakistan’s carbon emission is less than one percent, it remains among the countries most vulnerable to climatic disasters. Pakistan presented this case before COP27 and COP28, respectively.
During the briefing, the minister underscored the importance of provinces ensuring no encroachment alongside rivers, nullahs and streams.
Similarly, he pointed out the illegal construction alongside the significant threat of floods, emphasizing the need for the provincial government to ensure complete implementation of its anti-encroachment drive.
The minister stressed the need to strengthen civil defence, scout and other departments, particularly in provinces, to effectively tackle disaster-like situations.
Ahsan Iqbal also commended NDMA, particularly their performance during the 2022 flood, which remained remarkable. Earlier, each sector of NDMA gave a comprehensive briefing, highlighting their key achievements, which were acknowledged by the minister.
Islamic development bank delegation strengthens partnerships during visit to Pakistan
ISLAMABAD, March 22 (APP):A delegation from the Islamic Development Bank led by Director, IsDB Regional Hub Türkiye Dr. Walid Abdelwahab, is currently on a three-day visit to Pakistan from March 22 to March 24, 2024.
The delegation called on Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema, to discuss strengthening partnerships and promoting development initiatives, said a news release here Friday.
Ahad Khan Cheema welcomed the Director, IsDB and said that the civilian award conferred upon President IsDB, is a testament to the strong and enduring partnership between the Bank and Government of Pakistan (GoP).
He acknowledged the efforts of the President IsDB in galvanizing the international support for the floods 2022 affectees, by pledging US$ 4.2 billion.
Dr. Walid Abdelwahab thanked the Minister for Economic Affairs and informed that Pakistan is one of the founding members of the IsDB and the 3rd largest beneficiary of IsDB financing.
He assured full support to the government’s development vision and policies.
Both sides agreed that relations can be further strengthened through mutual collaboration and partnership.
Ahad Khan Cheema also witnessed the signing ceremony of financing agreement (worth US$ 200 million, equivalent to Euro 188.70 million) for Sindh Flood Emergency Housing Reconstruction Project, held at Prime Minister’s Office.
Secretary Economic Affairs Division Dr. Kazim Niaz, and Dr. Walid Abdelwahab, signed the financing agreement, which reflects confidence in international financial institutions in Pakistan’s economy and its future.
The project aims to construct 700,000 houses, benefiting an estimated 4.2 million people in rural areas, supporting creation of 75,000 water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities, and significantly improving conditions for over 1.3 million individuals.
Meanwhile, the two sides exchanged the IsDB’s Country Engagement Framework (CEF) Document (2023-25), outlining the medium-term strategic directions and priorities of the IsDB Group partnership with Pakistan up to 2025.
The IsDB Group Country Engagement Framework is focused on boosting recovery, tackling poverty and building resilience, and green economic growth which is in line with GOP’s vision and development priorities.
The Minister for Economic Affairs appreciated the role and support of IsDB for Pakistan at a challenging time.
He assured to further strengthen the relations with IsDB in the future.
Dr. Walid, Director IsDB said that IsDB Group remains committed to supporting Pakistan in its journey towards recovery and prosperity through climate-resilient infrastructure.
PM, Saudi Fund delegation discuss development projects
ISLAMABAD, Mar 22 (APP):A delegation of Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), led by Sultan Bin Abdul Rehman Al Marshad, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), SFD, during its visit to Pakistan called on Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif here on Friday and discussed its ongoing projects in Pakistan.
The Prime Minister welcomed the delegation and appreciated the long-standing friendship between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Pakistan and the efforts of SFD for providing financing to Pakistan in the fields of Health, Energy, infrastructure and Education as well the recent floods. The CEO, SFD thanked the Prime Minister and Government of Pakistan for the warm welcome and hospitality as well as the conferment of the National Civil Award, Hilal-e-Quaid-e-Azam.
The Prime Minister also appreciated the signing of Financial Agreements, early today, between SFD and the Government of Pakistan worth US$ 107 million for construction of Hydropower stations in AJK, which would not only provide clean energy but would also help eradicate the menace of deforestation, besides providing job opportunities to the local population.
The CEO, SFD shared updates with the Prime Minister about the ongoing projects including Mohmand Multi-purpose Hydropower Project, Golan Gol Hydropower Project, Malakand Regional Development Project, and other projects funded through Saudi grants.
The Prime Minister, while appreciating the support of the SFD, highlighted the need to expedite the processing of the new projects, shared with SFD, in the field of green energy and infrastructure, which once implemented, would go a long way in the economic revival of the country, besides serving the needs of the local communities.
The CEO, SFD assured early processing of the shared projects and also reiterated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, under the leadership of the Royal Family, would extend all possible assistance and continued support to Pakistan. The Prime Minster thanked the CEO and members of the delegation and conveyed his best wishes to all the members of the Royal Family, especially the Khadim-e-Harmain Sharifain.
ECP notifies successful candidates in Senate by-elections
ISLAMABAD, Mar 22 (APP): The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Friday notified the six winners of the Senate by-elections held on March 14.
According to the notification, Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has been declared a Senator for a general seat from Islamabad.
Additionally, PPP’s Jam Saifullah Dharejo and Muhammad Aslam Abro have been declared winners for two vacant Senate seats from Sindh.
Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo from PPP, Abdul Shakoor Khan Ghaibai from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), and Mir Dostain Khan from Pakistan Muslim League (PML-N) have been declared Senators from Balochistan, according to the notification.
Earlier on March 14, PPP secured four out of six Senate seats in the by-elections. In the National Assembly, PPP’s candidate Yousaf Raza Gilani emerged victorious with 204 votes, while Sunni Ittehad Council’s candidate Chaudhary Ilyas Mehrban came in second with 88 votes.
In the Sindh Assembly, PPP’s candidates Jam Saifullah Dharejo and Aslam Abro clinched victory with 58 and 57 votes, respectively. SIC’s Nazirullah and Shazia Sohail managed to secure 4 votes each. A total of 124 MPAs participated in the polling, including 116 from PPP and 8 from SIC.
In Balochistan, PPP’s Mir Abdul Qudoos Bizenjo emerged victorious with 23 votes, securing a Senate seat. Additionally, JUI-F’s Abdul Shakoor Khan Ghaibai and PML-N’s Mir Dostain were declared winners for the other vacant Senate seats.
FM, UK ministers discuss bilateral ties
LONDON, Mar 22 (APP): Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar held separate meetings with the UK Minister of State for South Asia and Commonwealth, Lord Tariq Ahmad, and with the Minister of State for Development, Andrew Mitchell at the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office in London on Friday.
Pakistan-UK relations, regional and global security, Pakistan’s role at the UN and other multilateral forums as well as Pakistan’s economic and development vision came under discussion.
Lord Ahmad felicitated Foreign Minister Dar on assuming the position of Foreign Minister, and expressed the desire to work closely with the new government going forward.
The two sides underscored the deep bonds of friendship and amity that exist between Pakistan and the UK. Next steps for further deepening of relations including leveraging the untapped potential of the British Pakistani diaspora to further expand trade and investment opportunities, were also discussed.
In response to Foreign Minister Dar’s call for early resumption of PIA flights to the UK, the UK side assured that it was working closely with Pakistan at the technical level to support resumption of flights at the earliest possible. The Foreign Minister assured the UK side that all technical issues on Pakistan’s side would be resolved at the earliest, enabling PIA to resume flights to the UK.
Discussing Afghanistan, the Minister of State for South Asia thanked the Foreign Minister for Pakistan’s continued support on resettlement of Afghan nationals. The Foreign Minister apprised him about the current situation.
Foreign Minister Dar expressed wishes for complete health and recovery for His Majesty, King Charles III as well as the Princess of Wales.
The Foreign Minister extended cordial invitations to Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron, Minister Lord Ahmad and Minister Mitchell to visit Pakistan, which were received with appreciation.
