PESHAWAR, Apr 02 (APP):The election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Tuesday notified postponement of Senate polls to the extent of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa till the administration of oath to the elected members against the reserved seats.

A notification issued here said that the commission was of the considered view that all the standards of honesty, justness, and fairness of election could not be fulfilled due to non administration of oath to elected members.

It added that non administration of oath was tantamount to disenfranchisement of lawful voters and denial of level playing field to them. Thus the electoral college was incomplete for the purpose of the Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The opposition members in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly on Tuesday submitted a request to the provincial election commission for postponement of elections in the province.

MPA Ahmed Karim Kundi submitted the request, signed by 25 members, on behalf of the opposition.

He maintained that the KP assembly speaker had not administered oath to the elected members against reserved despite verdict of Peshawar High Court.

It is worth mentioning here that the KP assembly speaker had already filed a review petition on the PHC verdict.

Earlier, the teams of Election Commission reached the House here on Tuesday for the polls well before time but the proceedings couldn’t start as per the scheduled time of nine o’clock.

The Provincial Election Commissioner contacted the Chief Election Commissioner on the request of the opposition for postponement of elections.

Later the ECP notified postponement of Senate elections in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

American Sikhs rally for Khalistan Referendum in historic Sacramento gathering

0

ISLAMABAD, Apr 02 (APP): Over 60,000 American Sikhs participated in the second phase of the Khalistan Referendum voting, which was held at the California State Capitol in Sacramento by the secessionist group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), with security provided by US snipers and police.

Earlier, over 127,000 US Sikhs participated in the first phase of the referendum, marking the first instance of such voting on US soil. This occurred on January 28, shortly after the US government revealed its prevention of an assassination attempt on Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a leading pro-Khalistan figure and India’s most sought-after individual.

Over 200,000 Sikhs joined both phases of the Khalistan Referendum in California to pay tribute to Jathedar Gurdev Singh Kaunke, hailed as a hero of the Sikh nation, a statement said received here.

Several thousand Sikhs were unable to vote during the first phase. The voting last night was arranged by the SFJ to facilitate those Sikhs who missed out initially. This voting process was supervised by the independent Punjab Referendum Commission (PRC) and took place under stringent security measures, with US police and snipers closely monitoring the situation.

As the voting day began, nearly 20,000 Sikh men and women formed long queues to cast their votes. Throughout the day, thousands of Sikhs remained at the center, singing devotional Sikhism songs, advocating for the establishment of Khalistan, and denouncing assassination attempts by Narendra Modi’s Hindutva regime. The voting took place months after the assassination of Khalistan Referendum’s Canada lead, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, inside Canada’s largest Gurdwara, and the thwarting of an assassination plot against Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, who leads the global Khalistan Referendum campaign, by US secret services.

The last night voting, was preceded by a significant event starting two days earlier: the Akhand Path Sahib. This ceremony was held to honor and recognize Jathedar Gurdev Singh Kaunke, who was unlawfully killed by Indian agents, as a “martyr of the Sikh nation.” During this time, a group of Sikh priests recited the holy scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib, from start to finish. Thousands of Sikh families and individuals from Sacramento and the surrounding areas attended the prayer, paying their respects to Jathedar Kaunke. The Khalistan Referendum Voting Center at the California State Capitol bears the name and dedication of martyred Jathedar Kaunke.

In the weeks prior to the Akhand Path Sahib at California State Capitol, thousands of Sikhs from around the world sent emails to Giani Raghbir Singh, the current head of Sri Akal Takht Sahib and to the President of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to formally declare Jathedar Kaunke as “ martyr of the nation.”

Gurdev Singh Kaunke was unanimously declared as head of Sri Akal Takht Sahib in 1986 by the grand assembly of Sikh people (Sarbat Khalsa).

He was extra-judicially killed by Indian Police on January 01, 1993 for his active role in leading the Sikh people’s movement for their religious and political rights. Recently, in December 2023, Punjab Human Rights Commission acknowledged that Jathedar Kaunke was extra-judicially killed by the Indian Security officials.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Attorney at Law and General Counsel to SFJ paid tribute to “Kaunke who worked tirelessly for the cause of right to self-determination of Sikhs”.

Pannun added that Gurdev Singh Kaunke was martyred because he was devoted to the cause of Khalistan and wanted Sikhs to have their homeland. Pannun said Sikhs have followed the path of Kaunke and gave their lives for rights of Sikhs, including noted UK-based Sikh leader Paramjeet Singh Pamma who has spent time in jail in Europe on Indian extradition warrant.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun told the crowd: “The issue of Sikhs started in 1947 when they should have been liberated but instead they went under Indian occupation. From 1950 Hindutva started suppressing Sikhs to end and dilute their identity and that effort continues. In 1984, the Hindutva Congress regime assaulted the holiest Sikh place, the Golden Temple, in Operation Blue Star and committed genocide of thousands of Sikhs. The genocide that started under Congress continues under BJP and Modi.

“We demand Modi’s political downfall through democratic channels. The Indian state’s involvement in the Sikh genocide must end. Sikhs are determined to dismantle Indian dominance and achieve autonomy.”

The Punjab Referendum Commission has announced a rescheduled date for the Khalistan Referendum, now set to occur on July 28th, 2024, in Calgary, Canada.

India’s massive arms acquisitions, hostile military policies threaten regional security: Pakistan

0
Ambassador

UNITED NATIONS, Apr 02 (APP): Pakistan has told the UN Disarmament Commission that India’s large-scale arms acquisitions plus its set of aggressive military policies has turned the security environment in South Asia “volatile and explosive”, and urged the world community to address this situation.

“Needless to say, these developments impinge on Pakistan’s security,” Ambassador Munir Akram, permanent representative of Pakistan to the UN, said as the the Commission, a subsidiary of the UN General Assembly, began its three-week session on Monday that is scheduled to deliberate on disarmament issues.

At the outset, he congratulated Ambassador Usman Jadoon, his deputy, on his election as Chairman of the Disarmament Commission’s 2024 session. “Pakistan is honoured and proud at your election as Chair of this important Commission.”

“The security environment in South Asia has deteriorated sharply in recent years, as the region’s largest State has embarked on a programme of massive armament,” the Pakistani envoy said, without naming India.

“It (India) is now the world’s largest arms importer, and is being supplied by its ‘strategic partners’ with nuclear, missiles, conventional and other destabilizing weapons,” he said, noting It has adopted war-fighting doctrines – such as ‘Cold Start’, envisaging a surprise attack on Pakistan, and a ‘limited war under the nuclear overhang’.”

“With a long-standing dispute — where the right of the people of occupied Jammu and Kashmir are being brutally suppressed; with two major armies deployed in close proximity; with the induction of major destabilizing weapons and war fighting doctrines; with the sponsorship of terrorism against Pakistan; and with the absence of dialogue or international action — the security environment in South Asia is volatile and explosive,” Ambassador Akram said

“Unless determined steps are taken by the international community to address this situation, it could emerge as the proximate cause of a regional and global catastrophe,” he added.

Pakistan, he pointed out has sought to achieve the objective of undiminished security at the lowest possible level of armaments, noting it had proposed the creation of a nuclear-weapon-free zone in South Asia.

“Unfortunately, twenty years after the adoption of this commitment, one South Asian State unilaterally conducted nuclear weapons explosions,” the Pakistani envoy said, adding that Pakistan was obliged to follow suit.

“In the immediate aftermath of South Asia’s nuclearization, Pakistan offered to conclude a ‘Strategic Restraint Regime,’ envisaging reciprocal limitations on nuclear, missile and conventional capabilities, together with efforts to resolve outstanding disputes, especially the festering dispute over Jammu and Kashmir.

“This proposal remains on the table.

“In the dismal and dangerous global security environment, the Disarmament Commission, with its universal membership and democratic structure, can make a singular contribution to promoting global and regional security.
