Narcotics recovered from air passenger

SIALKOT, Oct 04 (APP):Airport Narcotics Force (ANF) claimed on Wednesday to have arrested
a suspect and recovered narcotics from his stomach at Sialkot International Airport.
According to ANF, accused Khalid was trying to smuggle narcotics from Sialkot to Doha through an international airline.

During the search, the ANF found Khalid suspicious and shifted him to hospital, where doctors recovered 100 capsules (50 hashish and 50 ICE) after washing the stomach of the accused.

Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) have arrested the accused and further investigation
was underway.

Rs 69 bln money-laundering identified in 5 years: Senate body informed

ISLAMABAD, Oct 4 (APP): The customs authorities Wednesday informed the Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue that inspection teams had identified Rs 69.5 billion money-laundering committed by 63 individuals during last five years.

Member Customs, Zeba Hai Azhar briefed the committee in a meeting, chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwala, almost seven accused attached with the solar equipment import-business were among those who smuggled billions of rupees to different countries.

The senate body took up various reports on the massive money- laundering by solar panel/equipment importers was also apprised that two accused had deposited Rs 26 billion in cash for import of solar panels.

The customs official said First Information Reports (FIRs) had been registered against six accused for their alleged involvement in the money laundering for causing dent to the national exchequers.

She highlighted that around 59 percent imports were done through green channels and most of the transition cleared in the Post Clear Audit a Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) department.

While briefing on the Deposits Protection Corporation (DPC) Deputy Governor State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Inayat Hussain said that the funds of depositors had legal protection worth Rs 500,000.

Earlier its limit was Rs 250,000 and the said amount limit fully covers 94 percent of depositors under the SBP subsidiary Deposits Protection Corporation (DPC).

He said that all the scheduled banks operating in the country were required to be members of DPC to ensure the deposits in these banks come under the umbrella of the deposit protection mechanism.

While briefing on the account opening issue faced by the Politically Exposed Persons (PEP), SBP officials informed that a focal person had appointed in each bank to facilitate the PEP in their account opening procedures.

The SBP also appointed a focal person in the SBP to solve the queries related to the account opening said adding that SBP further instructs banks to fast this procedure.

Senator Kamil Ali Agha said that the PEP faced problems in their account opening this is a violation of fundamental human rights and the constitution Article 10.

He said action should be taken against such officers and persons who obstruct the opening of accounts.

PSX stays bullish, gains 323 points

ISLAMABAD, Oct 04 (APP): The 100-index of the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed bullish trend on Wednesday and gained 323.03 points, showing positive change of 0.69 per cent, closing at 47,079.83 points against 46,756.80 points the previous day.

A total of 330,249,094 shares valuing Rs.7.304 billion were traded during the day as compared to 213,188,395 shares valuing Rs. 6.094 billion the previous day.

As many as 342 companies transacted their shares in the stock market; 172 of them recorded gains and 134 sustained losses, whereas the share price of 36 companies remained unchanged.

The three top-trading companies were WorldCall Telecom with 150,526,082 shares at Rs.1.39 per share, Pak Refinery with 12,978,337 shares at Rs.15.89 per share and Bankislami Pak with 11,208,643 shares at Rs.17.59 per share.

Colgate PalmXD witnessed a maximum increase of Rs.45.00 per share price, closing at Rs.1,413.21, whereas the runner-up was Mehmood Textile with a Rs.23.63 rise in its per share price to Rs.541.63.

Bata (Pak) witnessed a maximum decrease of Rs.24.00 per share closing at Rs.1,675.00, followed by Premier Sugar with a Rs.21.37 decline to close at Rs.500.00.

Climate change hits Pakistan’s elderly population most: George

ISLAMABAD, Oct 04 (APP): Caretaker Federal Minister for Human Rights Khalil George on Wednesday at a seminar on Older People Day Tuesday said the devastating climate change impacts massively affected the elderly population of the country which was unable to protect itself from natural disasters.
He was addressing the HelpAge International Pakistan national seminar held in collaboration with the Ministries of Human Rights (MHR) and Climate Change here, focusing on the theme “Climate Change and its Impact on Older People.”
The International Day of Older People observed annually on October 1st, serves as a platform to highlight the challenges faced by older individuals globally while celebrating their invaluable contributions to society. This year’s event aimed to draw attention of climate change and the well-being of older people.
George said the country lost many of it’s senior citizens due to natural calamities due to climate change and COVID-19 pandemic which left the society deprived off it’s mentors and guiding forces.
He said love for elders is the proof of our success in the world and raising awareness among the youth to prevent elder abuse is an important task.
He added that the government had initiated many positive initiatives to ensure the rights of the elderly people which should be promoted and endorsed by the society.
“It is the responsibility of the government to provide the basic needs of the nation. We are doing positive work to give relief to the elderly We have to work together to achieve this goal. Our ministry always stands with the oppressed,” he added.
The main objectives of the International Day of Older People’s observance are to raise awareness about the specific challenges faced by older individuals in the context of climate change, advocate for policies prioritizing the protection and well-being of older people in a changing climate, recognize and celebrate the contributions of older individuals in climate action and sustainable development.
Vice Chancellor of Government College University Lahore, Dr. Asghar Zaidi was the keynote speaker at the event where he addressed the audience on Ageing and Demographic Transition in Pakistan.
He added: “As we stand at the cliff of environmental challenges, it is crucial that we turn our attention to the often overlooked and vulnerable demographic of older individuals. Failing to do so is like knowingly awaiting a devastating tsunami, whose arrival we have been forewarned of. The time to commence preparations is not tomorrow, but today.”
Panel Discussion was held on Climate Change and Vulnerabilities for Older Individuals, a group of experts came together to explore and discuss the multi-layered challenges faced by older individuals in the wake of a changing climate.
The panelists included the chairperson of the National Humanitarian Network (NHN) – Pakistan, Muhammad Amad, Country Coordinator at Pakistan Humanitarian Forum (PHF), Syed Shahid Kazmi, National Advisor/National Coordinator at the National Adaptation Plan project of the Ministry of Climate Change and United Nations Environment Programme, Arshad Samad Khan and Dr Sumaira from NUST. The panel discussion was moderated by Ms. Javeria Afzal.
The discussion shed spotlight on a range of critical aspects, including the vulnerabilities, health concerns, and risks to livelihoods that older individuals face because of climate change.
Diverse participants from the Ministries of Human Rights and Climate Change, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Civil Society Organisation, various donor organizations, UN agencies, academic institutions, media, representatives from Older People’s Associations (OPA), and the pensioners group graced the event with their presence.
Country Director, HelpAge International-Pakistan, Syed Moeez Kakakhel shared his insights as: “To address the issues, we must work collectively to ensure that older people are included in climate action strategies and adaptation plans. We must take steps to protect their health, well-being, and living conditions in the face of a changing climate.”

PBM provides free accommodation, education to over 6,000 orphans

ISLAMABAD, Oct 4 (APP): Pakistan Baitul-Mal (PBM) offered free accommodation, meals, and educational opportunities to over 6,000 orphans residing in its Sweet Homes throughout the country, said an official on Wednesday.
Talking to APP, a PBM representative, said the Sweet Homes were situated throughout the country, with 11 in Islamabad and Azad Kashmir Region, 9 in Lahore, 5 in Multan, 3 in Gilgit-Baltistan, 11 in Sindh, 8 in KPK, and four in Balochistan.
In these facilities, orphaned and homeless children are provided with a wide range of complimentary services, including standard accommodation, meals, education, uniforms, books, medical care, skill development programs, laundry services, religious education, and counseling.
These Sweet Homes accepted orphaned children aged between 4 and 6 years old, the representative added.

ILO Country Director meets SAPM, discusses manpower export and skill development

ISLAMABAD, Oct 4 (APP): The Country Director of the International Labour Organization (ILO), Geir Thomas Tonstol, paid a courtesy visit to the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) on Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development, Jawad Sohrab Malik.

During the meeting, a fruitful discussion took place on matters of mutual interest.

Malik welcomed the esteemed Country Director to his office and conveyed Pakistan’s enduring commitment as a vital member of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and a longstanding member of its Governing Body for the past three decades, said a press release here on Wednesday.

Geir T. Tonstole provided a comprehensive briefing to Malik on the ILO’s mandate and activities within Pakistan.
He also emphasized the key priorities outlined in the recently signed fourth Decent Work Country Program in May 2023.

During the meeting, Malik expressed his desire for the ILO to concentrate on manpower export through skill development, aligning with the latest criteria adopted by major host countries. Moreover, he requested the ILO to formulate an action plan and implementation framework with well-defined goals and objectives, especially aimed at enhancing the well-being of workers and facilitating manpower export.

To optimize the benefits of the ILO’s presence in Pakistan, Malik assured the Ministry’s full support for its planned initiatives. He emphasized that matters concerning the Skill Passport initiative should be overseen by the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA).

Furthermore, Malik also underscored Pakistan’s keen interest in participating in the Global Accelerator Program of the ILO, recognizing its potential to create decent job opportunities in developing economies like Pakistan.

The Country Director discussed priority areas with the SAPM to promote decent work for the Pakistan workforce and ensure safe and fair labor migration.

He informed the SAPM that a delegation of migration experts is scheduled to visit Pakistan in the upcoming month, which is expected to provide substantial support to this cause. He further stated that ILO through its Decent Work Agenda is committed to advocating for the needs of the people of Pakistan and advancing social justice for all.

The meeting was attended by Ms. Rabia Razzaq, Senior Consultant at ILO, Sagheer Bukhari, Senior Consultant at ILO, and Muhammad Wishaq, Joint Secretary of Workers Welfare at the Ministry of Overseas Pakistanis and Human Resource Development.
