BEIJING, July 28 (APP):Highlighting enormous potential of bilateral trade between China and Pakistan, Senior Research Fellow at the Charhar Institute, Prof. Cheng Xizhong said on Monday that in order to achieve a substantial and significant growth in the bilateral trade, especially a substantial and significant increase in Pakistan’s exports to China, it is far from enough to merely increase agricultural product exports to China.
In a statement here he said that other strong measures also need to be taken. First, China and Pakistan should further deepen modern agricultural technology cooperation. Pakistan is rich in agricultural resources and may give full play to its advantages in the agricultural industry. The two sides can jointly build demonstration bases for modern and efficient water-saving agriculture.
China should support the export of Pakistan’s high-quality agricultural products to China through “the mode of contract farming”. For small-batch specialty products such as cashmere, dates and dried fruits, exploring entry into the Chinese market via cross-border e-commerce could be a viable approach.
Second, he said, China helps Pakistan develop its manufacturing industry and should strongly support Pakistan in developing its own manufacturing sector, enhance its capacity for independent development, and accelerate its integration into the international industrial chain.
Third, China and Pakistan jointly build industrial demonstration parks, introduce more export-oriented enterprises, and attract more Chinese companies to invest in Pakistan. By leveraging China’s technology, capital and market experience, and combining them with Pakistan’s advantages in location and human resources, the two countries should jointly develop third-party markets such as those in the Middle East, Europe and the United States, thereby increasing trade volume, he said.
Fourth, Prof Cheng stressed a need to accelerate the construction of a smooth China-Pakistan three-dimensional transportation network, improve the transportation conditions of the Karakoram Highway, increase the number of China-Pakistan air routes, and enhance the circulation efficiency of trade commodities.
Fifth, Pakistan may make full use of the important platforms such as the Guangzhou Export Commodities Fair (CECF) and the China International Import Expo (CIIE) to display and promote its advantageous industries and products, increase Chinese people’s understanding of its products, and seek more trade cooperation opportunities.
Sixth, with the help of Internet technology, develop new trade models such as cross-border e-commerce, provide more convenient ways for Pakistani products to enter the Chinese market, expand sales channels, and break through the geographical and time constraints of traditional trade, he added.
