SUKKUR, Jul 09 (APP):A consultative meeting was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office to discuss a long-term scheme for providing clean drinking water to the residents of Sukkur city through public-private partnership here on Wednesday.
The meeting was presided over by Government Spokesperson and Sukkur Mayor Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh.
The meeting was attended by prominent business leaders, including Mohsin Farooq of Sukkur Chamber of Commerce, Haji Muhammad Shafiq Abbasi, President of Sukkur Traders Supreme Council, and Zahir Bhutti, Haji Javed Memon, President of All Sukkur Small Traders, Aamir Farooqui, Haji Shabbir Memon, General Secretary of All Sukkur Traders Ittihad, and Haji Parvez Channa, Vice President.
Barrister Arsalan Islam Sheikh stated that the Sukkur Municipal Corporation is working on a scheme to provide clean drinking water to its over 500,000 residents as per WHO standards through public-private partnership. The project, worth Rs 25 billion, involves water collection, treatment, machinery installation, and pipeline laying to supply water to households.
The Mayor said that the Sindh government will pay the costs in installments over 20 years after the project’s completion. He emphasized that consultations are being held with trader organizations and other stakeholders at the ward, union committee, and town levels to make the project more effective.
The Mayor directed the officials of the Census Bureau to provide detailed information on population, commercial, and industrial units within the municipal limits to make the project more effective. DC Sukkur Dr. MB Raja Dharejo highlighted that water samples from 250 locations in Sukkur city showed high levels of arsenic, which is a major cause of diseases.
Trader leaders welcomed the project, stating that it will positively impact citizens’ lives by providing clean drinking water. They assured full cooperation in implementing and making the project a success.
