Sindh govt allocates Rs 150 million to digitize SEPA

KARACHI, Jul 16 (APP):To promote transparency and modernize the environmental sector, the Government of Sindh approved complete digitization of all operations of the Sindh Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) including industrial environmental monitoring, inspection and assessment.
Sindh Secretary Environment, Climate Change, and Coastal Development Department, Zubair Ahmed Channa, in a statement issued here on Wednesday, informed that the digitalization initiative is aimed at development of modern digital systems for monitoring of the environmental performance of industrial units, air and water pollution levels, waste disposal methods, and compliance with environmental regulations.
Ensuring transparency at every stage, minimizing human intervention, enabling timely access to data, eliminating corruption in inspections, and enhancing public trust in regulatory processes are other main objectives of the scheme scheduled for completion by June 2028.
The new scheme titled “Automation of Industrial Environmental Monitoring, Inspection and Assessment” has been included in the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2025-26, with an allocation of Rs 150 million, he informed adding that following formal approval, an advertisement will be issued and after achieving the initial targets during the current financial year, further enhancements will be made to the system in the coming years.
Adviser to the Chief Minister Sindh for Environment, Climate Change and Coastal Development, Dost Muhammad Rahimoon, stated that the project reflects the provincial government’s vision of aligning the environmental sector with international standards through digital transformation.
Real-time access to environmental data, inspection reports, and compliance tracking will now be possible through a centralized platform, significantly improving institutional performance, he said, adding that the system will not only strengthen environmental protection but also help building greater trust between industries and the Environment Department.
