KARACHI, Jul 11 (APP):Inspector General of Police (IGP) Sindh Ghulam Nabi Memon, chaired a high-level meeting at the Central Police Office Karachi to assess the performance of Sindh Police in tackling kidnapping for ransom, arresting absconders in murder cases and cracking down on extortion-related crimes.
During the session, the DIG CIA Karachi and divisional DIGPs gave separate briefings on kidnapping cases in their respective areas, according to a news release on Friday.
It was revealed that the incidents of forcible abductions in Karachi have nearly ceased, with only three “honey trap” ransom cases currently under investigation. Efforts are underway to recover the abductees safely, and AVCC SP is personally supervising operations in the Katcha areas.
Public awareness campaigns through announcements at bus terminals and public places are also being conducted to prevent honey trap scams. Officials confirmed that no organized ransom-for-kidnapping gang currently operates in Karachi. However, a few extortion complaints have emerged in certain districts, mostly related to financial disputes and a specific extortion group, which law enforcement is actively working to dismantle.
The IGP Sindh emphasized that any remaining kidnapping or honey trap cases in the Katcha areas must be brought down to zero. He directed Sukkur and Larkana police to tighten the noose around such criminal groups under a coordinated strategy and to implement picketing at Katcha access points to intercept suspicious individuals entering from outside.
Ghulam Nabi Memon further ordered the Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) to intensify its operations against extortion gangs in the interior of the province and stressed the need for strong deterrents against honey trap tactics, which have become a common tool for ransom crimes.
Reviewing efforts made since the last meeting, IGP Sindh noted improvement in the arrests of wanted and absconding suspects in murder cases. He instructed all DIGPs and SSPs to ensure weekly tasking at police stations for apprehending such criminals.
Highlighting that fugitives are often involved in major crimes like extortion, motorcycle and car theft, he directed that FIRs be filed without delay. “Police face criticism primarily because of these unaddressed crimes. Don’t be afraid of criticism, report crimes and take action against criminal elements,” he urged.
The meeting was attended in person by Additional IGP CTD, DIGPs of Headquarters, Establishment, CIA, Special Branch, and a representative of the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC). Zonal and divisional DIGPs, district SSPs and SPs Investigations joined via video link.
