Indian media’s fake “civil war” in Pakistan, falls flat on face

In an abortive attempt to create diversion from Narendra Modi’s human rights abuses in Kashmir, the Indian media went berserk by propagating fake news about a “civil war” like situation in Karachi, triggering a hilarious response from the twitterati in Pakistan, who enjoyed every bit of the ridiculous reports.

#CivilWarInPakistan and #KarachiCivilWar were in no time the top trends, with the young twitter users going crazy by posting video clips from action movies, comics, images of the Indian MiG pilot Abhinandan Varthaman, shot down by Pakistan Air Force inside Pakistan’s territory, as scenes from the Civil War, getting an equally enthusiastic response with numerous retweets and likes.

The arrest of PML-N leader Captain (Retd) Safdar on charges of political sloganeering at Quaid’s Mausoleum and leave applications by senior police officers was exploited by the top Indian news channels, who portrayed an administrative issue as a “civil war” and went to the extent of even reporting casualties, and armed clashes.

The news reports were part of a persistent barrage of fake news from Indian mainstream media and its RAW controlled assets on social media over the past few months. The trend has witnessed a sharp spike as part of India’s fifth generation war (5GW) against Pakistan.

Pakistan’s Foreign Office on the “malicious and fabricated propaganda” by Indian mainstream and social media claiming civil unrest in Pakistan, said planting such baseless stories were reflective of the “Pakistan-obsessed BJP-RSS” mindset.

“Needless to say that Indian media continues to hit new lows,” he said, when asked to respond over the series of fake news flashed as breaking news across the Indian media about a “civil war in Pakistan”.

The Spokesperson said through “peddling fake news and running propaganda machinery”, India could not wash away the truth about its own gross and systematic human rights violations in Indian Ilelgally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

“Rather than reporting on humanitarian crisis in IIOJK, the Indian media chooses to spread fake and sensational news about Pakistan to detract from core issues,” he said.

The Indian media tried hard to appease its own consumers and to create a diversion from its human rights abuses in occupied Kashmir. However in its abortive attempt it created history by churning out fake news overpowered by the anti-Pakistan hysteria, undermining its professional ethics and credibility.

The unleashing of the Indian media did not go unnoticed, as Michael Kugelman, deputy director at the @AsiaProgram and South Asia senior associate @TheWilsonCenter in a tweet pointed that the Indian disinformation accounts were exploiting Pakistan’s current political crisis, and “falsely claiming that the country is no experiencing urban warfare.”

He described the trend as “dangerous and disturbing”, as several of these accounts were verified and had huge followings.

Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari said the Indian media was in “hyper drive with fake news on Pakistan” and regretted that it was “unfortunate that Twitter is [deliberately ignoring it].”

All major media outlets in so-called world’s biggest democracy decimated all journalistic norms as none bothered to fact-check such a huge gaffe. India’s News18, India Today, Zee News, India.com and several others quoted the International Herald which showed old videos of bomb explosions in Pakistan and portrayed it as the ongoing civil war.

The Institute of Policy Research in a report said their data indicates a pattern of Indian propaganda against Pakistan on digital media that grew exponentially after 2018 General Elections in #Pakistan. The propaganda hovers around largely 4 key themes.

Minister for Ports and Shipping pointed that the Indian propaganda was at its peak and “sadly fueled by the PDM Circus.” He said the food inflation was artificially manufactured, but was being brought under control.

Minister for Kashmir Affairs also lambasted the “fake, fabricated and malicious propaganda campaign to malign State institutions of Pakistan. He urged @Twitter to take action against Indian accounts for #FakeNews against Paksitan.

However, this idiocy of Indian media gave the Twitterati a perfect chance to enjoy as the microblogging site was flooded with messages to ridicule the Indian media’s insanity.

“Karachi civil war has gotten so bad that my food panda delivery boy had to crawl through mine fields carrying his AK47, RPG & 9mm along with my nihari and Biryani. This thing is getting so serious. Multiple cows have been killed & people are dying of over eating. #IndianMedia,” commented renowned singer Fakhr-e-Alam.

Besides numerous other fake photos, the Indian media also used an image of a building collapsed following a gas leakage blast in Karachi earlier in the day to substantiate its fake news of civil war.

“A little investigation would have informed Zee News that it wasn’t a bomb blast in ‘civil war’ in Pakistan but the result of a  gas leak in Karachi. Whither truth, objectivity, balance and fairness in reporting?,” said Farhatullah Babr, former senator of Pakistan Peoples Party which rules Sindh province.

“An Aircraft shot during civil war in Karachi… and the pilot captured…,” commented another Twitter user Fasihuddin while sharing the images of Indian aircraft MiG-21 and captured injured pilot Abhinandan following an aerial dogfight during India-Pakistan standoff in 2019.

From margins to mainstream: Women driving engine of economic growth

0

PESHAWAR, May 02 (APP): In a rapidly evolving world where social, political and economic landscapes are being reshaped, women are stepping forward to challenge the entrenched norms that once confined them to the margins through education.

From classrooms to beauty parlors and civil service to education, Pakistani women are making transformative strides—reshaping not just their destinies but that of their communities and country.

Though developing nations like Pakistan have made significant progress toward gender equality, disparities still persist in KP, driven by deeply rooted socio-cultural taboos and structural challenges.

According to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2024, no country has yet achieved full gender parity—but the tide is turning due to mushroom growth of information technology and online education.

Sundas Amin, a 34-year-old lecturer of Statistics at Govt College Pabbi Nowshera exemplified the changing narrative and shined in her community.

Hailing from a conservative village of Bannu district where educating girls was not a priority due to socio-cultural barriers, she earned an MSc degree in Statistics from the University of Peshawar with distinction despite these odds and contributed positively towards girls education.

“After my father passed away, we faced immense financial hardship. My mother and I migrated from a remote village in Bannu district to Warsak Road in pursuit of higher education to address our financial woes,” Ms. Sundas recalled. Her hard work bore fruit when she qualified the KP Public Service Commission examination and secured her teaching post.

Sundas’s journey is a testament to how education can empower women and uplift entire families—changing the course of their futures.

Similarly, Jiya Ali, a 32-year-old entrepreneur, turned rejection into opportunity. “After failing to secure a government job, I opened a beauty parlor in 2014,” said Jiya, who now earns Rs30,000 per bridal makeup session. “With support from my husband, I’ve built a thriving business.”

Her ambitions don’t end there. Jiya now plans to open a beauty parlor school in Nowshera City, aiming to equip more women with the skills to earn independently.

“Education for a girl should come first. That’s the only way to make your mark,” she advised aspiring women entrepreneurs.

Despite success stories like those of Sundas and Jiya, female participation in the government sector in KP remains low due to lack of education and sociocultural barriers.

Dr. Muhammad Naeem, former Chairman of the Economics Department at the University of Peshawar, said that gender disparity in public sector jobs stems from institutional and societal constraints besides poverty and unemployment.

“In most areas of KP, especially erstwhile FATA, cultural norms often dictate that women stay home or marry at early age.

This mindset, coupled with limited access to education and technical training, restricts women’s employment options,” he said. Red tapism, lack of mentorship, and gender bias in promotions further dampen women’s career progression.

According to the Pakistan Public Administration Research Centre (PPARC), women constitute only 49,508 out of over 1.2 million federal government employees—a mere 6.09% increase from last year.
Despite a 10% quota for women in civil services, real gains remain elusive, particularly in conservative regions like KP and Balochistan.

Acknowledging the problem, Dr. Riffat Sardar, Chairperson of the KP Commission on the Status of Women, highlighted key reforms including the National Gender Policy (2002), Women’s Empowerment Package (2017), and increased BISP stipends to support women-led households in education and health.

She said 4th Bint-e-Hawa Achievement Awards has been announced, recognizing women’s contributions in 12 different fields, with over 7,000 applications received nationwide.

Education Minister Faisal Tarkai maintained that the government is prioritizing female education in its new education development plan for year 2025-26.

“Seventy percent of newly established schools would be constructed for girls. This year, Rs326 billion has been allocated to education development in KP, including the creation of 59 girls’ schools and the upgrade of 150 existing institutions while recruiting for female teachers through ETEA are underway in KP,” he said.

Ikhtiar Wali Khan, Prime Minister’s coordinator for information and KP Affairs, emphasized the need to expand digital and distance learning opportunities for girls in remote regions of Pakistan.

He argued that the root cause of the gender gap in government employment lied in the lack of access to higher education for girls, particularly in rural and tribal areas of our province that needed to be countered through online education.

“The gender gap begins with primary education,” he said, claiming that about 4.7 million students aged five to 16 remain out of school in KP while most of public universities including University of Peshawar are facing financial crisis.

Many universities in KP are unable to attract top-tier educators due to uncompetitive salaries and poor working conditions. This has led to an increase in adjunct faculty, who may not always possess the necessary expertise or commitment to ensure high-quality teaching.

Consequently, students are deprived of the mentorship and knowledge needed to excel in their respective fields.

Additionally, he said the lack of continuous professional development for existing faculty members in KP limits their ability to keep up with evolving teaching methodologies and research advancements.

This stagnation undermines the effectiveness of higher education in the region and reduces the prospects for innovation and academic growth in KP.

The recent dismal performance of candidates in various competitive examinations in KP speaks volumes of the deteriorating standards of higher education in our province’s universities.

Not a single candidate from the lawyer’s quota has passed the last year’s examination for additional sessions judges and only nine candidates qualified for the 80 seats of civil judges.

Out of the 598 candidates, 139 did not pass the English part and that only 408 candidates out of 28,024, a mere 2.96%, passed the written CSS exam.

However, the success of women like Sundas Amin and Jiya Ali reflected a hope and broader trend of aspirations for girls of KP. With continued investment in education, economic opportunities, and inclusive policies, KP can harness the full potential of its women—breaking the shackles of disparity and ushering in a more equitable future.

Afghanistan’s socio-economic crisis deepens amid crackdown on women’s rights: UN

0

UNITED NATIONS, May 02 (APP): Seventyfive per cent of Afghanistan’s population struggles to meet their daily needs; with female-headed households, rural communities and internally displaced persons being most affected, the UN development agency (UNDP) has noted in a new report.

As the Afghan economy faces stalled local production and weak job creation, Afghanistan continues to heavily rely on imports and international assistance.

“UNDP’s current analysis and new data indicate the continuation of a deeply troubling trajectory for the Afghan people, who have been grappling with extreme vulnerability over the past decade,” Kanni Wignaraja, UN Assistant Secretary-General and head of UNDP for the Asia-Pacific region, said.

In the past year, political uncertainty, an ongoing economic crisis, shrinking international aid and climate disruptions have compounded existing vulnerabilities, limiting the economy’s ability to regain momentum.

As Afghanistan heavily relies on foreign assistance, the current reduction in international aid is likely to have a significant impact on humanitarian operations and the delivery of basic services.

“UNDP stresses the need for targeted interventions to address these challenges, recognising that humanitarian assistance alone is not enough, and sustainable longer-term economic and social solutions are needed,” said Stephane Rodriques, UNDP Resident Representative in Afghanistan.

As repressive laws continue to erode women’s rights, safety and access to basic services such as education and employment, Afghanistan’s socioeconomic crisis has seen the gender gap widen further, pushing women deeper into social exclusion and poverty.

With only seven per cent of Afghan women working outside of the household in 2024, restrictions on women and girls are projected to cost the Afghan economy nearly $920 million between 2024 and 2026, according to UNDP.

UNDP called for Afghanistan to lift restrictions on women and girls and for comprehensive support to women-led businesses to be provided.

In 2024, Afghanistan also faced a major influx of returnees from Pakistan and Iran, as these neighbouring countries hardened their stance on Afghan refugees and migrants.

The UN expects the rate of returnees to increase in 2025, with an estimated 600,000 to 1.5 million people expected to return to Afghanistan.

“With the anticipated arrival of hundreds of thousands of returnees this year and a marked reduction in international support, Afghan communities will have to navigate substantial challenges that will increase pressure on an already highly tenuous daily subsistence,” said Ms. Wignaraja.

US urges India, Pakistan to seek ‘responsible solution’ as tensions escalate over Kashmir attack

0

WASHINGTON, May 02 (APP): The United States Thursday urged India and Pakistan to work toward a “responsible solution” to the crisis over last week’s killings in Indian-occupied Kashmir, as tensions continue to escalate between the two South Asian nuclear powers.

“This government is in constant communication. We are asking for a responsible resolution from both parties,” State Department Spokesperson, Tammy Bruce, told reporters at her daily news briefing

Responding to a question, she said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio in his telephonic conversations with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister S.Jaishankar underscored the need to work in the interest of long-term peace and security in the region.

Spokesperson Tammy Bruce said President Donald Trump‘s Administration is in constant involvement over the situation.

Echoing U.S. leaders’ condemnation of April 22 terrorist attack that killed 26 tourists in Pahalgam area of the disputed Kashmir region, the spokesperson said, “As the President articulated to Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi last week, the United States stands strong with India against terrorism, and Prime Minister Modi has our full support.”

Bruce said Secretary Rubio “encouraged both countries to work toward a responsible solution … that maintains long-term peace and regional stability in South Asia.

“We continue to be in touch with the governments of both countries, as I mentioned, at multiple levels.”

On its part, Pakistan has firmly denied Indian allegation of involvement in April22 attacks, and called for international investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, both countries have closed their airspace to each other. India has suspended the 1960 water-sharing treaty between the two countries.

Pakistan’s UN Ambassador discusses with UN chief ‘evolving’ security situation in South Asia

0

UNITED NATIONS , May 02 (APP): Amid mounting India-Pakistan tensions, Pakistani Ambassador to the United Nations,Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday and discussed the latest developments in the region.

“The discussion focused on the evolving security situation in South Asia as well as the imperative of de-escalation and the efforts being made to that effect,” a press release issued by the Pakistan Mission to the UN said.
“The Ambassador reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to regional peace and stability,” it added.

Earlier, in the day UN Spokesman Stephane Dujarric was asked at the regular UN briefing whether Guterres plans to travel to India and Pakistan as the situation was heating up.

Dujarric replied that the UN chief had offered his good offices during his phone calls to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in the wake of the armed attack in Indian-occupied Kashmir . “So I don’t think there would be any travel until there’s a clear message that, as in any instance where we have high tensions between two countries, that they’ve both accepted his good offices,” he added.

Another correspondent pointed out that India was threatening to use the model of Israel in Gaza, in Kashmir, and, with that tension going so high now, why not the secretary-general would interfere?

The spokesman replied: “The Secretary-General, as I said, spoke very soon after the attack in Kashmir. He spoke to the Minister of External Affairs of India. He spoke to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, and I think we told you a lot about those phone calls. And, again, as I said, he offered his good offices.”

UN Security Council ‘monitoring closely’ India-Pakistan tensions, may meet soon: Council president

UNITED NATIONS, May 02 (APP): The President of the UN Security Council for May, Evangelos Sekeris of Greece, said Thursday he expects the 15-member body to meet “sooner, rather than later” on the serious situation between India and Pakistan following the April 22 armed attack in Indian- occupied Kashmir to deal with the heightening tensions between the two South Asian neighbours.

“Its (the situation) is ongoing, evolving … (and) we are listening and monitoring closely,” he said in response to a question at his press conference held to brief journalists on the programme of the Council’s work for the current month.

Responding to a question if any of the two parties have requested a Council meeting on the subject, the Council president said the situation was under watch and “we will be seized of the matter, of course –this is certain that it will happen”.

In this regard, he cited the press statement issued by the Council last week in which it strongly condemned the “terrorist” attack called for accountability and international cooperation to bring the perpetrators of attack in Pahalgam to justice.

“We know that bigger member states are already in contact with both sides,” Ambassador Sekeris said. “If the situation is not de-escalating, I mean, calling for an extraordinary Security Council meeting, is something which can come as a consequence, because it is actually the main business of the Security Council,” noting that Pakistan is its non-permanent member.

Noting that two big member states were involved in the confrontation, the president said, “you know its lot at stake, and let us hope that those efforts for de-escalation will be helpful, but we are prepared (to deal with it), of course.”

“We also join calls for de-escalation and dialogue so that the situation does not spin-out of control,” he said, adding, that the Council may meet “sooner, rather than later.”
