Three Pak climbers summit Gasherbrum-I  including soloist Abid Baig

ISLAMABAD, Jul 23 (APP):Three Pakistani climbers have successfully reached the summit of Gasherbrum-I (8,080m), depicting the country’s growing mountaineering community, Alpine Club of Pakistan (ACP) said on Wednesday.

Among them, Abid Baig of Hunza achieved the remarkable feat of soloing the 11th highest peak in the world on July 20 wirhout supplementary oxygen or Sherpa support in pure alpine style, a rare accomplishment in modern high-altitude climbing. “Climbing an 8,000er solo and without oxygen is an extraordinary display of endurance and mountain spirit,” said Karrar Haidri, Vice President of the ACP.
Mehboob Ali and Abbas Ali from Arandu village in Shigar Valley summited as part of the Elite Exped team, led by Nepali mountaineering icon Nirmal Purja, popularly known as Nims Dai.
On the ascent, they were joined by Sheikha Asma Al Thani of Qatar’s royal family. .
“This is a proud moment for Pakistan,” Haidri said.
“Climbers from both the north and south of the Karakoram have proven their world-class skill, resilience and determination.”
All climbers are reported safe and have begun their descent to Base Camp, till filing of this report.
