ISLAMABAD, Sep 30 (APP):Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) is set to formally launch the Pakistan Hockey League (PHL) in Islamabad on October 14, marking a major step towards developing a professional and commercially sustainable hockey structure in the country.
The inaugural season of the PHL is planned for 2027, with the league being developed as part of the PHF’s efforts to modernise Pakistan’s hockey infrastructure and create new avenues for investment, professional competition and player development.
The PHF has awarded the league rights to Mediacast following a competitive bidding process earlier this year.
The inaugural edition is likely to feature six to eight franchise teams, while leading international players are expected to be contracted to play alongside Pakistani players. The participation of foreign players would provide Pakistani players an opportunity to train and compete alongside international talent and gain exposure to modern professional standards.
According to the PHF, the league will also seek to attract private-sector investment through franchise ownership and corporate sponsorships, providing additional commercial and marketing support for hockey across the country.
The PHL is expected to create opportunities for Pakistani hockey professionals to work with experienced international experts, helping develop expertise in areas such as coaching, management, sports science and professional league operations.
A professionally managed league could also open new commercial avenues through franchise ownership, sponsorships, broadcasting and digital content, merchandising, advertising, hospitality, ticketing and grassroots development programmes.
Pakistan has a rich hockey tradition, having won Olympic gold medals, World Cups and Asian Games titles and produced generations of internationally acclaimed players.
The proposed league aims to build on that legacy by establishing a modern hockey ecosystem centred on regular high-level competition, professional structures, investment, performance science, youth development and commercial sustainability.
The October 14 launch will formally mark the beginning of the PHL journey, with the inaugural season scheduled for 2027.
