ISLAMABAD, Jun 20 (APP): Pakistan stormed into the final of the FIH Men’s Nations Cup after edging France 3–2 in a dramatic penalty shootout in the first semifinal, following a gripping 3–3 draw in regulation time in Kuala Lumpur on Friday.
According to information received here, the first quarter of the high-stakes encounter saw both teams aggressively vying for an opening goal, but strong defensive play and goalkeeping ensured the score remained deadlocked. The second quarter unfolded in a similar fashion, with both France and Pakistan striving to break the deadlock.
France struck first, as Smenjaud Xavier deftly deflected the ball into the post to put his team ahead.
Entering the third quarter, Pakistan’s hopes of a comeback appeared bleak. France doubled their lead through Charlet Victor, who found the back of the net with a sharp flick, further strengthening their position.
But Pakistan refused to back down. Afraz reignited their campaign with a much-needed goal, offering a glimmer of hope. In a dramatic turn of events during the final minutes of the quarter, the Green Shirts surged ahead with two quick goals.
Sufyan Khan and Muhammad Hammadudin found the target in rapid succession.
However, three minutes before the end Charlet converted a penalty to neutralise Pakistan’s lead, leading to the decisive penalty shootout.
Pakistan held their nerve as Afraz, Shahid Hannan and Rana Waheed converted their attempts, while France faltered under pressure, missing three of their five shots.
