MULTAN, Oct 19 (APP):The demand for establishing a Pakistan Hockey Board in place of the existing federation has gained strong momentum, with national hockey team head coach and Olympian Tahir Zaman lending his full support to the proposal.
Tahir Zaman, a member of Pakistan’s 1994 World Cup-winning squad, said that creating an independent and well-structured board was the “need of the hour”. He stressed that if the current system had failed to deliver results, introducing a new and effective governance model would be a sensible and timely move.
He proposed the formation of a self-governing and transparent hockey board comprising capable and professional individuals committed to reviving Pakistan’s lost hockey glory. The new body, he suggested, should operate on the principles of transparency, financial discipline, and modern management practices.
Drawing a comparison with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Tahir Zaman said hockey too required a strong and autonomous authority to manage its administrative and financial affairs efficiently. He attributed the national game’s decline to funding shortages and flawed policymaking over the years.
“If these issues can be resolved through an empowered hockey board, then the government must take this step without delay,” he stressed.
The idea of a Pakistan Hockey Board was first floated by Pakistan Hockey Foundation President Mir Tariq Hussain Bugti during a press conference in Quetta. The proposal has since been endorsed by legendary player Shahbaz Ahmed Sr. and PHF Secretary Olympian Rana Mujahid, both of whom have supported the establishment of a reformed and independent hockey governance structure aimed at restoring Pakistan’s sporting pride.
