Grassroots level hockey development initiative ceremony held
ISLAMABAD, Sep 03 (APP):Under the directions of Pakistan Hockey Federation President Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani, a prestigious ceremony was held in Mansehra as part of the “Grassroots Level Hockey Development Initiative.”
During the event, hockey equipment and complete kit bags were distributed among Under-15 teams of over 24 government schools spanning from District Mansehra to Kaghan, said a press release.
This initiative has been undertaken in joint collaboration with the Pakistan Hockey Federation, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Sports Board, Department of Education, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Hockey Association to establish and strengthen Under-15 school hockey teams across various schools in Mansehra.
Additional Secretary IPC Zaka Ullah Khattak attended as the Chief Guest, while Deputy Commissioner Mansehra Khalid Iqbal Khattak was the Guest of Honour and praised the young athletes.
The ceremony was attended by PHF Selection Committee Member Olympian Naeem Akhtar, Chief Coach Directorate General of Sports KP Shafqat Ullah, District Education Officer, District Sports Officer, Principal GHHS No. 01 Mansehra, principals of various schools, Olympians, representatives of PHF and the Provincial Hockey Association, as well as a large number of sports enthusiasts, coaches, and players.
Speaking on the occasion, officials announced that the “Under-15 National Hockey Championship” will be held in January 2027. In the upcoming phases of this project, equipment distribution and program scope will be expanded to other KP districts—including Abbottabad—as well as Faisalabad, South Punjab, Sindh, and Balochistan.
The primary objective of this initiative is to attract children toward hockey starting from the school level, provide structured training, and unearth fresh talent from the grassroots to build a strong pipeline for the national team. Players, school administration, and sports authorities lauded this effort by the Pakistan Hockey Federation and the government, calling it a major milestone toward reviving the national sport.
