ISLAMABAD, Oct 15 (APP):Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal on Thursday called for concerted efforts to revive Pakistan’s hockey glory through youth engagement, private sector support and modern training facilities.
Addressing a signing ceremony marking a partnership between the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and Vital Group to promote youth engagement and strengthen their association with the national hockey team, the minister said Pakistan had immense potential to regain its prominent position in international hockey.
Describing hockey as a symbol of national identity, he said talented young players should be encouraged to carry forward the legacy of Pakistan’s golden era and raise the national flag high at international competitions.
The minister underscored the importance of private sector patronage in promoting sports and supporting athletes, saying financial security would enable players to focus entirely on their performance rather than personal expenses.
“A player’s primary concern should be how to score the next goal rather than how to meet personal expenses,” he said.
Ahsan Iqbal stressed that excellence in modern sports required more than talent and physical ability, highlighting the growing role of sports science, technology and data-driven performance analysis.
Physical fitness, mental resilience, discipline and sustained concentration were also essential for success at the international level, he added.
Referring to leading athletes worldwide, he said their achievements were built on consistent practice, discipline and an unwavering focus on performance.
The minister also highlighted the vision behind establishing the National Sports City in Narowal, saying it offered international-standard infrastructure for 14 sports at one location to provide athletes with modern training facilities.
He offered the National Sports City in Narowal as a permanent training centre for the Pakistan national hockey team, reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing players with a conducive environment to improve their performance.
Describing the PHF-Vital Group partnership as an important step towards strengthening hockey and engaging young people in sports, Ahsan Iqbal expressed confidence that sustained collaboration among sports institutions, the private sector and young talent would help Pakistan rebuild its hockey legacy and restore its standing in international competitions.
