World optometry day celeberated at SIOVS

The Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (SIOVS), Hyderabad, marked a significant milestone in advancing eye care through strategic collaborations and the celebration of World Optometrist Day.

HYDERABAD, Apr 08 (APP): The Sindh Institute of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences (SIOVS), Hyderabad, marked a significant milestone in advancing eye care through strategic collaborations and the celebration of World Optometrist Day.
The ceremony was attended by Commissioner Hyderabad, Fayaz Hussain Abbasi, as Chief Guest, while Prof. Dr. Jan Muhammad Memon, Founding Vice Chancellor of LUMHS Jamshoro, graced the occasion as Guest of Honor.
The Commissioner Hyderabad said that SIOVS contribution in ophthalmology is appreciateble and it further provided health facilities related to eyes to people of Hyderabad and Sindh.
On the occasion, SIOVS signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) aimed at strengthening eye care services, research, and outreach across Sindh and beyond.
The first MoU was signed between SIOVS and Bayer Pakistan to enhance retina care through improved teaching, training, and research. The agreement focuses on capacity building of retina specialists, joint research initiatives, academic sessions, and efforts to prevent avoidable blindness, while supporting SIOVS in becoming a center of excellence.
The second MoU was inked between SIOVS and Vision for Education Foundation, focusing on expanding community-based eye care services. The partnership includes free corneal transplant surgeries for deserving patients, ethical provision of corneal tissues, school eye screening programs, mobile surgical units, and outreach camps in underserved areas. The collaboration also ensures adherence to international standards, including WHO guidelines.
On the Occasion SIOVS celebrated World Optometrist Day, recognizing the vital role of optometrists in primary eye care delivery. Addressing the gathering, Executive Director Prof. Dr. Khalid Iqbal Talpur highlighted SIOVS’s extensive outreach and its impact in improving access to quality eye care services across Sindh.
Around 60 optometrists from various districts participated in the event, and their contributions at rural health centers and taluka hospitals were acknowledged.
The event concluded with the distribution of appreciation shields among dedicated staff and optometrists. Prominent attendees included Dr. Hadi Bux Jatoi, former Director General Health, and Dr. Pir Ghulam Hussain, District Health Officer Hyderabad, along with leading ophthalmology professionals from across the region.
