KARACHI, Nov 03 (APP): In a landmark move to bolster the province’s dairy and meat production, the Sindh Livestock and Fisheries Department, in collaboration with FonGrow (an organisation of Fauji Fertilisers), has successfully launched the ‘Herd Transformation Initiative.’
The initiative reached a critical milestone on November 2, 2026, with the first successful batch of embryo transfers carried out at the Sindh Institute of Animal Science in Karachi. The project represents a paradigm shift in livestock management, utilising advanced genetic technology to rapidly improve local breeds.
Rapid genetic improvement
Briefing Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah, Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Mohammad Ali Malkani highlighted that the initiative will drastically accelerate the genetic improvement of local cattle. Traditionally, herd transformation takes approximately 30 years; however, this new technology is expected to achieve the same results in just five years.
The strong demand for the programme was evident, with the Livestock Department ordering 132 embryos of Red Sindhi and Guzerata breeds, while private farmers have already placed orders for an additional 90 embryos.
Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah congratulated the Livestock Department, its secretary Kazim Jatoi, Sindh Institute of Animal Science team, FonGrow team and the entire project team on this achievement. He emphasised that the success of the embryo transfer process is a significant step toward meeting the growing milk and meat demands of Pakistan’s population and will provide a substantial boost to the livelihoods of local farmers.
The Chief Minister urged the department to scale up the initiative across the province to ensure that the benefits of high-yield genetics reach the grassroots level, ultimately enhancing food security in the region.
