KARACHI, Sep 23 (APP): The Sindh Transport and Mass Transit Department has sent a summary to the provincial Cabinet for the purchase of 500 electric buses, Senior Provincial Minister for Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon said on Wednesday.
In a statement, he said that after Cabinet approval, the new electric buses would be introduced in different cities of the province in phases as part of efforts to expand the public transport system.
The Minister said the Sindh government’s priority was to ensure that modern public transport facilities were not confined to Karachi. The People’s Bus Service was being expanded continuously, while new routes were aimed at providing citizens with affordable and improved travelling facilities.
He said 50 double-decker buses would reach Sindh by November 30 and would be operated on different routes, increasing passenger-carrying capacity.
Sharjeel Memon said the launch of the People’s Bus Service in Qambar Shahdadkot had received a positive response from the public, with residents of Larkana, Qambar, Shahdadkot and surrounding areas appreciating the modern bus service.
He said the electric bus project would be an important addition to Sindh’s public transport system and would also help address growing transport needs in urban areas.
