Polio vaccination campaign in Karachi will begin today
KARACHI, Sep 20 (APP):A week-long anti-polio campaign will begin across Karachi on Monday, September 21, with health authorities targeting around 2.5 million children under the age of five.
Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi said all arrangements for the campaign, which will continue until September 27, had been completed. He directed Deputy Commissioners to achieve a 100 per cent vaccination target in their respective districts.
According to a press release issued by the Commissioner’s Office, Polio Task Force Coordinator Saud Yaqub briefed the commissioner that preparations had been completed in coordination with the relevant Emergency Operations Centre, health officials, vaccination teams, area in-charges, designated personnel from various departments and representatives of international partners.
Deputy Commissioners have also finalised arrangements in their respective districts, while contacts have been established with local communities to seek their cooperation in ensuring the success of the campaign.
The commissioner directed Deputy Commissioners and Assistant Commissioners to remain present in the field and regularly report progress. Deputy Commissioners were also instructed to monitor the deployment of vaccination teams and security arrangements every morning and provide all possible support in coordination with international partners.
The meeting was informed that briefing and training sessions for polio workers had been completed. Meetings with doctors and jirga sessions were also held to strengthen community engagement and cooperation.
Vaccination teams have been directed to give special attention to areas with low coverage from the first day of the campaign. Teams will begin moving into the field between 8am and 9am each morning to administer the vaccine to children.
