HYDERABAD, Oct 12 (APP): On the directives of Vice Chancellor Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro Prof Dr Ikram Din Ujjan, an awareness rally and seminar were organized at the LUMHS Trauma Centre, Hyderabad to mark World Arthritis Day and raise public awareness about different types of arthritis and joint diseases.
On the occasion, head of the department of orthopedic surgery, LUMHS Trauma Centre Hyderabad Prof Dr Faheem Memon along with other medical experts, highlighted the causes, symptoms, preventive measures and modern treatment options for arthritis, knee pain and other joint-related diseases.
In a statement issued on the occasion, the vice chancellor LUMHS Prof Dr Ikram Din Ujjan said that promoting public awareness and preventing diseases were essential for building a healthy society.
He emphasized that joint and bone diseases should not be ignored, as delayed diagnosis and treatment may affect mobility and, in severe cases, lead to permanent disability.
He further stated that LUMHS was committed to providing quality healthcare services to the public while continuing awareness activities to educate communities about disease prevention and the importance of timely medical treatment.
Addressing the seminar, the head of the department of orthopedic surgery, LUMHS trauma centre Prof Dr Faheem Memon said that people suffering from heart or brain diseases were often compelled to sell their homes and property to afford medical treatment. However, many people ignore knee pain and joint diseases because they believe these conditions are not life-threatening.
He said that unfortunately, many patients prefer to live with pain and disability rather than seek timely medical treatment, which could seriously affect their quality of life.
Dr Faheem explained that arthritis includes several conditions, such as osteoarthritis, inflammatory arthritis and autoimmune-related joint diseases. Common symptoms include joint pain, swelling, stiffness, restricted movement and difficulty performing daily activities.
He further explained that patients suffering from severe knee pain or advanced joint damage may experience increased discomfort from repeatedly climbing stairs, excessive walking or activities that place additional pressure on the knees without proper medical guidance.
However, he clarified that complete rest was not necessary for every patient. Depending on the type and severity of the disease, appropriate exercise, weight management, physiotherapy and medical treatment can help improve joint function and mobility.
Prof Dr Faheem Memon emphasized that clinical examinations, X-rays and other diagnostic tests, when required, play an important role in identifying joint diseases at an early stage. He advised people experiencing persistent joint pain, swelling or difficulty walking to consult qualified medical specialists to prevent further complications.
Prof Abbas Memon, Prof Ashraf Khaskheli, Dr Irshad Bhutto, Dr Nusrat Nisar, Dr A.D Memon and Dr Ahmed Ali Memon along with other doctors and medical staff were also present on the occasion.
