Senate committee reviews performance of PIA


ISLAMABAD, Dec 5 (APP): Special Senate Committee on the Performance of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Monday reviewed working of the national flag carrier.

The committee reviewed the implementation status of the recommendations made during the last meeting.

The meeting was chaired by convener Senator Mushahidullah Khan.
A sub committee was formed to look into the performance of PIA. The sub committee would report to the committee in two months.

Senators Muzaffar Hussain Shah, Gen ® Abdul Qayyum and Farhatullah Babar are members of the sub committee.

The committee members expressed annoyance over absence of chairman and chief executive officer of PIA and said their privilege was breached.

Secretary Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) Irfan Elahi briefed the committee about the launch of premier service by PIA, its impacts so far and terms and conditions of the wet lease with Sri Lanka.

The committee expressed dissatisfaction over the performance of the airlines, as it failed to achieve the revenue target of 21 percent during first six months of current fiscal year.

The committee members were told that last year PIA suffered loss of Rs 14 billion.

The committee was also given comprehensive briefing on the performance and strategies of Marketing Department of PIA and new route plans including eastern routes.

The committee members were also briefed on the performance of sitting Director Flight/Airport Services, her pay and perks package and tours undertaken during the period.

The committee was told there was no plan to dismiss employees in PIA.
