LAHORE, Jul 02 (APP): Pakistan Markazi Muslim League (PMML) President Khalid Masood Sandhu has said that water security is essential for national stability, agricultural sustainability and long-term economic growth, urging greater national unity and diplomatic efforts to safeguard Pakistan’s water resources.
In a statement issued on Thursday, he welcomed the seminar held in Islamabad on the Indus Waters Treaty, describing it as an important initiative to enhance public awareness regarding water security, national sovereignty and the country’s economic future.
Sandhu said that water is the foundation of life, agriculture and economic development, expressing concern over what he termed India’s actions that are inconsistent with the spirit of the Indus Waters Treaty. Referring to reported disruptions in water flows affecting the Neelum-Jhelum project, he said such developments were alarming and required international attention.
He called on the Government of Pakistan to adopt an effective diplomatic strategy to address unilateral actions and present the country’s position at relevant international forums. He stressed that protecting Pakistan’s water resources was crucial for safeguarding national interests and ensuring long-term food and economic security.
The PMML president warned that any obstruction to Pakistan’s share of water could have serious implications for agriculture, food production, the national economy and the livelihoods of millions of people. He emphasized that water should never be used as a political tool or a means of exerting pressure, saying that such actions undermine internationally recognised agreements and principles.
Khalid Masood Sandhu further stated that regional peace and stability require all parties to honour international commitments and resolve disputes through dialogue and legal mechanisms. He added that issues relating to water resources and the Kashmir dispute should be addressed in accordance with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
He reiterated that Pakistan must continue raising its concerns through diplomatic channels while strengthening national consensus on water security, adding that the protection of water resources is directly linked to the country’s national security, economic development and the welfare of future generations.
