RAWALPINDI, May 11 (APP):Commissioner Engineer Amir Khattak on Monday said efforts were underway to make the Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) Project operational by mid-June 2026.
Chairing a meeting to review progress on the project, traffic management, relocation of commercial activities and provision of civic amenities, he said physical progress on the Ring Road had reached 85%.
The commissioner directed the relevant officials to ensure effective restrictions on the entry of heavy traffic into Rawalpindi during daytime to reduce congestion.
The meeting also reviewed a proposal to establish heavy traffic connectivity between Rawat-Chak Beli Road and GT Road to facilitate smooth transport movement.
Participants were informed that schemes for widening roads adjacent to the Ring Road had been included in the Annual Development Programme for approval.
Officials said direct diversion of heavy traffic to the Ring Road would significantly reduce traffic congestion in the city.
Engineer Amir Khattak also instructed the authorities concerned to allow loading and unloading in inner-city commercial areas only through small vehicles, while large containers and heavy transport vehicles would be shifted to the Ring Road.
The meeting discussed a phased plan to relocate vegetable and fruit markets, bus terminals, factories, warehouses and other major commercial activities to areas along the Ring Road.
The commissioner said the project would help promote commercial activity while reducing pressure on the city’s urban population.
He directed the relevant departments to consult traders and other stakeholders regarding the relocation of commercial centres and transport hubs, and instructed authorities to complete all administrative and operational matters within the stipulated timeframe.
