Rawalpindi to become first plastic-free district; DG EPA

RAWALPINDI, Apr 30 (APP):Environmental Protection Agency Punjab has stepped up enforcement against single-use plastic bags, announcing the establishment of plastic-free zones as part of a wider plan to eliminate their use across district headquarters.
Addressing a press conference, DG EPA Punjab Dr. Imran Hamid Sheikh said strict laws were already in place, with violators facing fines, sealing of businesses and other legal action.
He said a phased strategy would be implemented from June to make district headquarters across Punjab free of single-use plastics, adding that Rawalpindi was being prioritized as the first district to achieve complete elimination.
The DG said environmentally compliant alternatives, including plastic bags above 75 microns, were being promoted in consultation with stakeholders to avoid disruption to business activity.
He said plastic-free zones were being established in Rawalpindi and the initiative would be expanded to traditional markets to ensure effective enforcement across the city.
Additional Deputy Commissioner General Madiha Sahar said plastic bags persisted in the environment for long periods and their harmful effects were now evident, urging the public to adopt eco-friendly practices.
District administration and environmental authorities also lauded traders and business communities, particularly Food Street for their cooperation in creating awareness in this regard and continuing their efforts to achieve the target of a plastic-free Punjab.
