CHINIOT, Jul 24 (APP):The authorities have evacuated more than 4,300 people from flood-prone areas along the River Chenab as district officials intensified relief and rescue operations following rising water levels, the district administration sources said on Friday.
The operation is being carried out under directives from Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, with the Chiniot district administration working under the supervision of the Faisalabad divisional administration and in coordination with emergency and other government departments.
Faisalabad Commissioner, Imran Hamid Sheikh visited the flood-hit areas of Mouza Sahmal and Adda Jamia Abad late on Thursday, accompanied by Chiniot Deputy Commissioner, Ayesha Rizwan, Assistant Commissioner, Sheena Azam and other officials.
During the visit, the commissioner reviewed relief operations in Tehsil, Bhawana and inspected a flood relief camp established at the Government College, Adda Jamia Abad.
The officials briefed the commissioner on the flood situation and the measures taken to protect affected communities.
The district administration said it had activated relief measures after reports indicated a flood wave exceeding 250,000 cusecs in the river.
According to official figures, 4,338 residents have been evacuated to safer locations, while more than 3,500 livestock animals have also been relocated.
Three relief camps and six rescue camps are currently operational across the district.
The commissioner directed the Irrigation Department to urgently study riverbank erosion at Mouza Sahmal and prepare measures, including the installation of protective spurs, to reduce the risk from future flooding.
He also instructed district authorities to conduct drone surveillance of riverine areas to identify any remaining residents or livestock requiring evacuation.
The commissioner praised the efforts of the district administration, Rescue 1122, sanitation teams and other government departments involved in the flood response, adding all available resources would be used to safeguard lives and property during the emergency.
