Punjab allocates Rs43.1 bln for Specialized Healthcare in budget

The Punjab government has allocated Rs43.1 billion for various development projects under the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department in the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, aiming to strengthen tertiary healthcare facilities and expand medical education infrastructure across the province.

LAHORE, Jun 16 (APP): The Punjab government has allocated Rs43.1 billion for various development projects under the Specialized Healthcare and Medical Education Department in the provincial budget for the fiscal year 2026-27, aiming to strengthen tertiary healthcare facilities and expand medical education infrastructure across the province.
According to budget documents, a major share of the allocation has been earmarked for key healthcare initiatives launched under the Chief Minister’s ongoing development programs. The government has set aside Rs20 billion for the establishment of the Nawaz Sharif Institute of Cancer Treatment and Research in Lahore.
The budget also includes an allocation of Rs784.460 million for the revamping of the old block of the Punjab Institute of Mental Health (PIMH), Lahore. The project is aimed at improving infrastructure and healthcare facilities at the institution to provide better mental health services to patients.
Another significant allocation of Rs20 billion has been made for the establishment of the Nawaz Sharif Medical District in Lahore, a comprehensive healthcare complex that will house multiple specialized medical institutions under one umbrella.
According to the budget documents, the Nawaz Sharif Medical District will comprise Children Hospital-2, the Institute of Surgical, Orthopaedic and Medical Rehabilitation, and an Infectious Diseases Hospital to address a wide range of healthcare needs.
The medical district will also include a Centre of Excellence for Nursing Education and Midwifery, aimed at enhancing the quality of nursing education and strengthening the healthcare workforce in the province.
In addition, the district will feature the Institute of Plastic Reconstructive Surgery and Burn Centre, the Institute of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology (Eye and Ear), and the Institute of Genetic and Blood Diseases and Bone Marrow Transplant, providing advanced specialized treatment facilities.
The provincial government has also allocated Rs5.35 billion for the establishment of Medical Colleges Specialty Hospitals and the provision of equipment to tertiary care hospitals across Punjab. The initiative is expected to improve healthcare delivery and support medical training by equipping hospitals with modern medical technology.
The allocations reflect the Punjab government’s focus on expanding specialized healthcare services, strengthening medical education infrastructure, and improving access to advanced treatment facilities for patients throughout the province.
