Overloading control measures vital for road protection, traffic safety: minister

LAHORE, Aug 19 (APP): Punjab Minister for Communication and Works (C&W) Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth has said that the Mobile Axle Load Management System, implemented for the first time in Punjab, would help effectively control overloading, protect road infrastructure and prevent traffic accidents.
Chairing a review meeting on the system, here on Wednesday, the minister said mobile weigh stations had been made operational in five districts, Attock, Jhelum, Chakwal, Multan and Jhang, where regular axle-load checking of heavy vehicles and action against overloaded vehicles were underway.
The meeting was informed that mobile weigh stations could be shifted to different highways according to requirements and were being deployed on routes frequently used by heavy transport vehicles travelling to various parts of the province.
C&W Secretary Raja Jahangir Anwar, Special Secretary, Additional Secretary and Chief Engineers attended the meeting and briefed the minister on the implementation of the system and operations at the mobile weigh stations.
The minister said the basic objective of the initiative was to protect roads from damage caused by overloading. He added that controlling excessive axle loads would also contribute to preventing accidents and improving road safety. He was informed that staff deployed at the mobile weigh stations had been provided the required training, while necessary equipment and facilities had been made available at all five operational stations.
Malik Sohaib Ahmed Bharth said the system would play an important role in protecting Punjab’s road infrastructure and ensuring safer travel for citizens. He termed the establishment of mobile weigh stations an important initiative in line with the vision of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
