Over 1,000 heavy vehicles face action in Lahore traffic crackdown
LAHORE, Sep 02 (APP):Lahore Traffic Police took action against more than 1,000 heavy and commercial vehicles during a late-night crackdown, restricting the entry of vehicles without valid licences, fitness certificates, proper lights and tarpaulin covers.
The operation was carried out at major entry and exit points of the city following Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s directives to improve traffic management, a traffic police spokesperson said on Wednesday.
Chief Traffic Officer (CTO) Syed Abdul Rahim Shirazi inspected Shahdara Chowk, Barkat Puli, Imamia Colony Railway Crossing and Sagian Bridge, where he was briefed on lane discipline and the movement of heavy traffic.
Traffic police took action against 209 tractor-trolleys carrying soil and sand without tarpaulin covers and 122 heavy vehicles without fitness certificates.
Cases were registered against 16 drivers for operating heavy machinery and trailers without valid driving licences.
The police also proceeded against 202 overloaded vehicles carrying fodder, hay and steel bars, while 144 unfit and heavily smoke-emitting vehicles were stopped from entering the city.
Challan tickets were issued to another 88 heavy vehicles and machinery for excessive smoke emissions.
Shirazi said only commercial vehicles with valid licences and required documents would be allowed to enter Lahore. He said vehicles carrying sand, soil and other material without proper tarpaulin covers would not be allowed to operate. “Traffic laws will be enforced without any concession,” the CTO said.
