Muree administration issues emergency alert, deploys resources amid heavy rain, landslide threats

MURREE, Apr 07 (APP): The Muree district administration on Tuesday issued an emergency weather alert warning of more heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, and possible hail over the next three days. Authorities cautioned that continuous rainfall could heighten the risk of landslides, falling trees, road closures, fog, and reduced visibility, particularly in Jhika Gali, Patriata, the Muree Expressway, and other vulnerable hill areas.
All relevant departments have been placed on high alert. Rescue 1122, police, highways, civil defence, municipal services, the health department, and local government personnel were deployed, with heavy machinery, ambulances, municipal staff, Suthra Punjab programme teams, and landslide clearance units stationed at key locations for rapid response.
The administration noted that recent rainfall had already triggered a landslide in Jhika Gali, highlighting the urgency of precautionary measures.
Residents and tourists were urged to avoid unnecessary travel, particularly at night, and to stay away from landslide-prone areas, riverbanks, and slopes. Drivers were instructed to check vehicle fitness, fog lights, brakes, and tyres, while unnecessary stays at hiking trails, selfie points, and open areas were discouraged, with special care advised for children and the elderly.
Meanwhile, the District Emergency Board, chaired by Deputy Commissioner Agha Zaheer Abbas Shirazi under Punjab Emergency Service Rescue 1122, reviewed strategies to safeguard lives and property, accelerate relief for landslide-affected people, and ensure uninterrupted electricity, gas, and water supply.
The meeting was attended by senior officers from police, deputy commissioners, assistant commissioners, Rescue 1122, WASA, highways, special branch, NHA, Para Force, municipal committee, local government, health, civil defence, WAPDA, waste management, and other relevant district and tehsil departments.
Deputy Commissioner Shirazi directed all departments to maintain field presence, operate help desks and control rooms, and coordinate emergency response. Citizens were urged to exercise extreme caution while driving during rain or hail and to report emergencies immediately.
