Govt to implement Emission Trading System

The Punjab government has decided to implement a modern Emissions Trading System (ETS) to control industrial pollution and prevent smog.

LAHORE, Jun 12 (APP): The Punjab government has decided to implement a modern Emissions Trading System (ETS) to control industrial pollution and prevent smog.
Under this system, pollution monitoring, emission data and trading platform will be established in the province.
According to the authorities, financial incentives and benefits will be given to low-polluting industries, while factories emitting more smoke will have to purchase additional permits. Other action, including fines, will also be taken against industries exceeding the prescribed limit.
The government says it will encourage industries that adopt clean and environmentally friendly technologies to promote environmental responsibility in the industrial sector.
It is worth mentioning here that the model has been developed in collaboration with the University of Chicago and is based on a world-class “cap and trade” system, under which a limit on pollution is set for factories.
According to officials, the measure is expected to reduce smog, improve public health and promote environmentally friendly industrial activities.
