GCWUS completes planting phase of Miyawaki Forest at Imam Bibi Campus

SIALKOT, Sep 01 (APP):Government College Women University Sialkot (GCWUS) on Tuesday successfully completed the planting phase of its Miyawaki Forest at the Imam Bibi Campus, an initiative launched under the supervision of Vice Chancellor(VC) Prof.Dr.Shazia Bashir in collaboration with Nizam Sons,a university release said.

The project commenced with a site assessment on July 13,2026,followed by extensive preparatory work, including deep ploughing to a depth of three feet,incorporation of organic compost and land levelling before plantation began at the end of July.

Around 500 canopy and tall-tree saplings of native and locally adapted species were planted in a dense,multi-layered arrangement in accordance with the Miyawaki methodology,the release added.

The trees were planted over an area measuring approximately 260 by 220 feet,with all 500 saplings planted in a single day.

Members of the GCWUS gardening team participated in the plantation drive.

According to the release,the next phase of the project will include the introduction of native herbs,shrubs and Neem trees in accordance with the directions of the Vice Chancellor.

The university gardening team has been entrusted with the ongoing maintenance of the forest while Nizam Sons will provide technical guidance.

The project was coordinated by Advisor EPS and Chairperson of the Department of Environmental Science Dr. Shahla Andleeb.

The university expressed gratitude to Dr.Muhammad Hassan Siddiqui and Engineer Mubashar for their continued support in making the initiative possible.

The Miyawaki Forest initiative was aimed at promoting native vegetation and enhancing the environmental sustainability of the university campus.
