RAWALPINDI, May 20 (APP):Former Punjab health minister, Dr Jamal Nasir on Wednesday called for an across-the-board accountability drive against corrupt elements, saying national resources must be redirected towards poverty alleviation and public welfare.
Speaking as the chief guest at a ceremony held at Anjuman Faiz-ul-Islam (AFI) Faizabad Markaz, to mark the first anniversary of the victory in “Marka-e-Haq”, he said the country needed an internal struggle for justice similar to the resolve shown in defending Pakistan’s sovereignty.
The event was presided over by President Anjuman Faiz-ul-Islam, Professor Dr Riaz Ahmad and attended by Senior Vice President Mrs Izhar Fatima, Vice President Lt. Col. (R) Mian Jameel Athar, General Secretary Pervaiz Akhtar, Finance Secretary Raja Sabir Hussain, Joint Secretary Tahir Zia, heads of AFI educational institutions, teachers and students.
Students presented tableaus, national songs and speeches in tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces.
Dr. Nasir praised the role of the armed forces in defending the country, saying the nation took immense pride in their sacrifices and achievements. Referring to “Marka-e-Haq”, he said Pakistan had decisively responded to enemy aggression and forced India to seek international intervention for a ceasefire.
He alleged that corrupt elements had continued to exploit national wealth and public resources for decades, adding that accountability should be enforced without discrimination on political, religious or institutional grounds.
“Unless this internal purification is carried out, poverty and deprivation cannot be eliminated from society,” he said.
Referring to the 1971 war, Dr Nasir said India had long considered itself militarily superior, and added that perception had been shattered on May 10, 2025.
Addressing the ceremony, Professor Dr Riaz Ahmad paid tribute to the leadership and personnel of Pakistan’s armed forces and said the country continued to extend a message of peace despite tensions in the region.
He said Pakistan’s leadership believed that national resources should be utilised for the welfare and prosperity of the people rather than conflict.
Other speakers, including Mrs Izhar Fatima and Lt. Col. (R) Mian Jameel Athar, also addressed the gathering, while Raja Sabir Hussain offered prayers for Pakistan’s security, stability and progress.
